    Worldwide Halves Problem

Boring uncreative repetitive attacking play (Stormball) + Slow drudging wrestling & gang tackles by defences (Stormball) + By the numbers coaching (Stormball) + Antiquated Rules + Rule changes that have changed the perception of the game that it is no longer 'tough' + Poor marketing + Poor...

Laurie Daley trying to ruin rugby league.

I have no problem with Indigenous, Islander, Maori or any minority race based team because no player has ever said "I'm white and I'm offended that I can't play for the Indigenous team". I don't think you should be allowed to have a grievance on behalf of people who don't exist.

Laurie Daley trying to ruin rugby league.

It likely requires mutual discussion but there's a lot of attention that can be gained by hosting it on the biggest weekend of the year. It can work with a Maori side too but I think that incorporating Maori players into an Islanders team casts a wider net.

    Worldwide Halves Problem

Agreed. Coaches won't change it. Star halves players won't change it. Cracking down on referees won't change it. A rule change is required, one that favours second phase play, passing and variety in attack over robotic plays. It also has to penalise wrestling and gang tackling.

    Channel 7 wins TV rights

Ray Warren usually spends half the game reading catalogues trying to decide what kind of sandals he'd like to purchase.

Laurie Daley trying to ruin rugby league.

Daley's been smoking crack. Only countries should be in the World Cup. Not even a merged side like the West Indies. The future for the Indigenous side is to play a Pacific All Stars side. Play it on the Friday before the Grand Final and it will rate 2.5-3.5 million nationally. It will become...

KANGAROOS skipper Cameron Smith wants more international rugby league...

When he's on a high coming off a World Cup win -- "More internationals" When he's struggling from the exhaustion of the long season -- "Fewer internationals" Creating a proper strategy for rugby league is too important to be left to the whims of the players, coaches and clubs.

    Worldwide Halves Problem

Coaches know that the current rules of the game favour a robotic repetitive attacking style. It's about attrition. Variety is a risk. It's true that there's a halves problem. But part of that problem is that coaches want them to play it safe & by the numbers.

    Pacific 6 Nations Tournament

A Pacific 6 Nations should happen - I don't know if it can work bi-annually if we also want Australia & New Zealand to compete against European nations as well. The best fit would be once every 4 years - that way it's a big event. In the other years they can still play one off matches. That...

40/30 - it should be time

Most fans want to see proper 10 metres & play-the-balls. The issue isn't the rules - some games are fine, others are dodgy - so it's actually about the consistency of their enforcement. There's 2 key problems with the way the game is played at the moment: attacking teams rely far too much on...

40/30 - it should be time

Over the past century there have been hundreds of changes which have evolved into the set of rules we have today. To not consider this reality and to think that the current rules are somehow sacrosanct and beyond alteration represents a total failure on your behalf to understand the fundamental...

40/30 - it should be time

The shift towards a defensive playing style has impacted upon audience interest in the game. No one can argue against that. It really is holding back the game. If rugby league had adopted that mantra then they'd still be playing rugby union...

40/30 - it should be time

Even with 4 less players on the field the balance between attack and defence remains the same -- yes there are bigger defensive gaps but also fewer attacking players to exploit them. Teams will still play conservatively by making dummy half runs because it will continue to yield the most metres...

Could this have an effect on Foxtel and Fox Sports, and therefore the NRL?

Read the post 4th post on the thread. If one of the streaming services - Disney, Amazon, Facebook etc - becomes the a major broadcaster for NFL, MLB, NHL, NBA it will trickle down and eventually become the norm. It won't take much to export their platforms. To ascertain how much these...

Could this have an effect on Foxtel and Fox Sports, and therefore the NRL?

There'll be 2 new Disney streaming channels - the entertainment one & an ESPN sports clone. Disney owns about 80% of ESPN. But over the past four years it's dropped from 100 million to 87 million subscribers. To keep profits up they've increased the package price but it's a stop-gap for profits...

Could this have an effect on Foxtel and Fox Sports, and therefore the NRL?

Disney is going after the film production because they're trying to a) cement their position as the unrivaled #1 movie studio which no others will be able to compete with b) they want to create a Netflix rival and this rapidly expands their library. Fox will retain its News & Sports arms. That...

40/30 - it should be time

I'd suggest most kickers in the NRL can make a 40 metre touchfinder. If they can't, then they'll simply be replaced by those who can. Under this rule the defence will vary its strategy throughout the course of the game. If teams are kicking for 40m then they'll drop back the wingers. If that...

40/30 - it should be time

A 40-30 is probably too simple and would be overused. However, I am in favour of a general 40 metre touchfinder kick advantage rule. Why? Because I've seen it trialed already in real life in an experimental match and it improved the game dramatically. When teams were attacking from their own...

    International Window.

Playing Internationals during the middle of the NRL season has an overall negative effect on rugby league. Before you get all worked up -- in the scenario where they don't give the NRL club a bye then you're putting two forms of your own product in direct competition for eyeballs. You don't see...

What is your most unpopular opinion about the NRL?

It prevents clubs from going over the cap - the NRL would know well in advance if a club was at risk of going over. If players want to accept money cash in hand then they will continue to do so. But there won't be this grey area of 'I had no idea it was wrong'. If the money isn't coming from...
