NRL's growth mindset points to 18th team. And it ain't Perth.

I think Perth 3 makes a lot of sense for them but Brisbane 2 will be an absolute shit show. There is a small but passionate AFL community here which is the bulk of the people attending Lions games. The Suns and Giants are an absolute flop and the lions only a couple of seasons ago were really...

NRL's growth mindset points to 18th team. And it ain't Perth.

Brisbane 2 would be a disaster for the AFL. The Lions only draw decent crowds when they are winning. When they aren't they average sub-20k. If there is a cross-town rival this splits the AFL fan base even further.

NRL's growth mindset points to 18th team. And it ain't Perth.

The AFL has nowhere left to go. Tasmania and Darwin are even more financially disastrous than Gold Coast or Western Sydney... Canberra is not much better an option. If the NRL were considering Darwin we'd be saying the same thing.

They also only had to shift 29k tickets

    Brisbane Jets

@Get Rid of The Donkeys Member of the QLD Parliament and former NRL referee Tim Mander has last night called out Mick de Brenni and the President of the Springwood Football club for corruption. The two grew up together... good to finally see this stuff come to light. The Pumas favours might be...

    2021 Ratings

I haven't checked the figures to see if it's true, but isn't the theory that the games rate better at night time?

    Brisbane Jets

That's because the State member for Springwood, Mick De Brenni is close friends with the President of the Springwood Pumas AFL club and also de Brenni's son played at the Springwood Pumas. Logan is a pure RL area and without the favours, AFL would be nowhere.

The Game Future NRL Stadiums part II

Well, waste of money or not. At least there isn't a 20k oval being built in Cairns. It gives the city a good venue to attract events like NRL matches, soccer matches, Union matches and a good stadium venue.

    Redcliffe put their hand up

I'm sure the winning bid will have all of those things.

"It’s very realistic to say that we’ll have a second team in Brisbane in 2023": V'landys

I'll take a shiny new stand and hill for the Jets any day. I agree that the fear around the Western Corridor is unfounded, it is a staunch RL area but my point is we are terrible at Govt lobbying as a game.

"It’s very realistic to say that we’ll have a second team in Brisbane in 2023": V'landys

It's not relevant, there is a narrative going around that the AFL will take over the Western Corridor which will be a big growth region in SEQ. There's nothing they are doing that the NRL can't do with a little effort. Although I will say one thing... we are terrible at Govt lobbying. We are a...

"It’s very realistic to say that we’ll have a second team in Brisbane in 2023": V'landys

I think it is just considered a plus to counter the AFL threat, but honestly. I can't see what the AFL can do with the Lions that we can't do in a rugby league city with the Broncos and Brisbane 2.

    2021 NRL Grand Final

I love it how we pretend that Brisbane haven't already hosted a Grand Final in 1997. We count the title as one of their six but pretend the GF didn't happen... 🤔

"It’s very realistic to say that we’ll have a second team in Brisbane in 2023": V'landys

The two issues you raise 1) no one ever having heard of Magic Round and 2) it being seen as a bunch of RL games and not an ''event'' are simply marketing and game day experience issues. No one in Australia had heard of the NRL Magic Round until they hosted the first one and 30k people...

"It’s very realistic to say that we’ll have a second team in Brisbane in 2023": V'landys

To answer your question, they wouldn't go to watch other teams, they'd go to an ''event'' though. Anyway, I might be wrong and it might be a terrible idea to hold it in Melbourne, I'd like to see them try on an AFL free weekend though.

That's funny and / or sad because it's most likely how it will play out

Since we have the GF this year it would be a perfect time to announce it at or just before the GF
