Have the ARL(C) done more harm or good the last 30 years?

Roughy, I would rather that than the status quo. For me Origin at its core is a domestic representative game for Australians (and a bloody great one). So rather than distort that, I'd prefer to try and build up internationals by increasing the player pool and incentive for players to play...

Have the ARL(C) done more harm or good the last 30 years?

My suggestion for solving this problem would be: 1. Create an exemption from the NRL salary cap for bonus payments made to a player who: -represents England and NZ, up to a maximum of say $50k per year; or -represents any country other than Australia, up to say a total of $100k per year...

    Possible ANZAC Test Line-Ups

Pretty sure Hoffman is playing on the left for the Broncos so I'd leave him there. With Matai (and Beale) out I'd go Winterstein left centre. Right centre I'd go SKD; don't really rate him but I think, being a specialist right centre he has an adge over Glenn. Will pick Nightingale but part of...

    Enough talent for expansion?

2 new teams would dilute the talent pool and personally I don't think the current pool will support it. But we could add 2 new squads worth of players within 5 years just by setting up a png academy (in say townsville) and a pacific academy in say brisbane. Bring 25 gun players over at each of...

    3-2-1 vs Bunnies

Might be being a bit optimistic but I see some damn good things building here. After the disaster of round 1 they have got the defence sorted and are not conceding easily out wide. Then the last 2 weeks elliot has turned his mind to attacking structure amd it has improved significantly each...

    Kiwis news

    I'll have a crack: 1. Locke 2. Nightingale 3. SKD 4. Beale 5. Hoffman 6. Foran 7. Benji 8. Matulino 9. Luke 10. JWH 11. SBW 12. Mannering 13. Smith 14. Eastwood 15. Bromwich 16. Pritchard 17. Glenn Still a strike centre and quality halfback away from being 50:50 with the...

    Kiwis news

SKD and RTS play on the right, but you've got them on the left..does that matter that much these days? SBW has said he prefers to play on the right side. Agree with 4 forwards on the bench. I remember the Kiwis making around 20m a set in the last 20 minutes of the end of year test last year...

I could live with that. Who would you partner him with?

    Kiwis news

Any love for an all roosters right edge of SBW, SKD and RTS? Scheck is a bolter but there's some value in keeping the club combo together. Left edge is harder. I think I'd go Whare at centre and Hoffman at wing. Hoffman has been awesome at fullback but I think long term Beale or Locke give...

    Is the NZRL getting screwed?

Reading the discussion I can't help but feel like the nzrl should roll under the umbrella of the arlc. There are comments from kiwis about the nzrl not having the capability, and comments from (insular) aussies about 'why should we care'. If the nzrl became a bodyy under the arlc like the qrl...

    Is the NZRL getting screwed?

Fair point mate, equalising payments would be an improvement but as you say won't solve the problem because Aussie players have many more opportunities through Origin. I guess the eligibility issue needs a more structural solution, which is probably a discussion for another thread.

    Is the NZRL getting screwed?

The proposed SOO eligibility rule solves the problem for Kiwis who head to Oz at 15 or later (like Kasiano), but it doesn't help at all for the ones who go across younger (like Tamou or Papali). For the ones who go across earlier (or who are heritage players), the financial incentive of SOO is...

    Is the NZRL getting screwed?

Have to agree with this from Kemp. http://www.nzherald.co.nz/league/news/article.cfm?c_id=79&objectid=10836492 "Although New Zealanders make up around 30 per cent of NRL and NYC players, the NZRL was likely to see only a pittance from the recently agreed A$1 billion television deal. Kemp...

    Is the NZRL getting screwed?

This makes sense if you take the view that this is an ARLC comp, and that NZ is allowed to participate at the ARLCs invitation and as a 'favour' to the NZRL (and I think that is the traditional view). For mine we need to move past that. True, without the ARLC comp NZ would have no professional...

    Is the NZRL getting screwed?

Understand what you are saying, although I doubt they would get a significant $NZ deal without the Warriors. Similarly, a portion of the $AUS deal is for the rights to broadcast the Warriors in Australia. The problem with the Broncos analogy is that I am not suggesting the Warriors should get...

    Is the NZRL getting screwed?

The Origin v NZ eligibility / payments issue has got me thinking about NZRL finances. As far as I know the NZRL does not get a significant grant from the ARLC. If that is right, it is unfair and helps explain some of the difficulties the Kiwis are having. The Australian component of the new...

    TV rights thread part 4

My take is that on balance we have done very well. We avoided the two disaster scenarios that many thought were real possibilities: 1) that news would again use its influence to underpay; 2) that we would bw forced to compromise the game itself (eg going to quarters, artificial stoppages) to...

RL independence day arrives - NRL Independent Commission announced

Part of me sees this as the new wave of club based businessmen forcing the ARL to stand up and end the News Ltd rort for the good of the game. The other part of me worries that this is the clubs standing up for their own self interest at the expense of other parts of the game, and a sign of...

    The TV rights thread

I think Gallop is a pretty capable guy, so when he says stupid things like 'AFL deserve more for their TV rights' and 'it was naieve to think that the IC would happen before the 2011 season', I don't think its him talking.

RL independence day arrives - NRL Independent Commission announced for November 1

Mate I understand all of those concerns and agree with some. For me though the next TV deal is almost make or break. If we get screwed again we will fall too far behind other codes and may struggle to recover. So if by getting News out now we can get a much better deal next time, I am prepared...
