    18th club, whose next?

So? Toowoomba has produced 42 rugby league players. Should they get a team? Producing players is important, but ability to support a team is more important.

It's not like Christchurch is a league town. Their first love is union. If you're going to play second fiddle, at least do it in a city with more than two million people.

    18th club, whose next?

But we care about Christchurch at a quarter of Perth's size? Let's just rename it the East Coast Rugby League and make it official.

    18th club, whose next?

I know you're trolling, but in what world could no clubs west of Melbourne be considered to cover all of Australia?

Finally, a thread to discuss Perth!

    18th club, whose next?

From 2010 to 2018, the Lions finished in the bottom four seven out of nine seasons, and still missed finals the other two. The Lions have definitely struggled.

Who are you referring to as the worst-run competition? The A-League? They've had the opposite problem. They only have 12 teams and are probably too small. Yeah, that's pretty much it. I expect both the AFL and NRL to top out at 20 teams. Beyond that you have to start bringing in conferences...

    18th club, whose next?

But the AFL doesn't need to expand. They'll only expand to 20 to even up the numbers. That's the same as the Premier League in a country twice as populated. There's only so many timeslots. Same as NRL. There's more timeslots due to shorter games, but eventually expansions are going to have...

    18th club, whose next?

The NRL should be grateful for the Giants in Canberra. There's a very real AFL base in Canberra and if Canberra got an AFL team, the most popular team would be a two-horse race between them and the Raiders. But nobody gives a shit about the Giants, so as long as they keep milking Canberra, the...

Interestingly, rugby (union) is one of the largest sports in Sri Lanka. Had 160k registered players a decade ago. Shows South Asian populations are open to contact sports if it's marketed right.

My God, they're two different leagues, two different countries, two different circumstances. Can we please move on from this?!

    NRL Expansion: Google Trends data

Participation isn't a direct correlation though, especially when the professional product is such poor quality. Union has a greater participation than league in the ACT, but that doesn't translate to the Brumbies and Raiders. The NRL holds more weight than Super Rugby, so participation isn't...

    NRL Expansion: Google Trends data

I can't figure Google trends very well. Is there away to segregate it into age brackets? It'd be interesting to see if there's closer ratios for younger groups you'd expect to be less dyed-in-the-wool. So potentially more younger NRL fans in the southern states, but more younger AFL fans in...

    18th club, whose next?

Exactly right. There are hundreds of thousands of people in Perth who aren't a fan of West Coast or Freo. And more importantly, people can like more than one sport. The East Coast expats provide a good starting point, but give them a good product and plenty of locals will get on board too...

    18th club, whose next?

It's a matter of growth vs consolidation. Brisbane is already a league town. With two teams and a game every week. I'm sure a third team would do well, but it doesn't add much as much as a Perth team would. A Perth team represents new fans, new sponsors, (eventually) new players, and a new...

    18th club, whose next?

If Perth gets a third AFL team, it won't be because their crying out for one, it'll be because they need an even number of teams after Tasmania enters. It'll be seen as an easy win with a big following and a ready-made stadium (like the Firehawks), but ultimately not add a lot to the league.

    NRL Summer Series

This would be my vote. And in the summer holidays you could play it as all night games through the week like Big Bash.

    18th club, whose next?

Just because you can, doesn't mean you should. You're proposing a 24-team competition, but 13 teams are within a 120-km radius of Sydney. Where less than a quarter of the Australian/NZ population live. Expansion is a chance to dilute the Sydney teams, to turn it into a a real national/regional...

    18th club, whose next?

Three new teams within 120km of Sydney Harbour. That sounds like rugby league expansion. For the love of God, get out of NSW. You're not growing the game that way, you're fracturing your audiences.
