ie. Buying Thorman, releasing Tonga- WTF is making the decisions in this joint?

I think you will find Thorman was on a very small contract and Tonga left due to the fact he didn't have a chance at Parramatta. BTW he has only started to shine at Canterbury, he was not half the player he is now at our club.

Morris at Halfback. He is the most logical choice. He should play there next season. I know he is injured at the moment but he should play there next season.

Parramatta Round 1 2005

1. Wade McKinnon
2. Luke Burt
3. Ben Smith
4. Daniel Wagon / Ash Graham (dependant on recovery)
5. Eric Grothe

6. Michael Witt / John Morris
7. John Morris / Our fantastic new halfback signing

8. Paul Stringer
9. Mark Riddell
10. Michael Vella
11. Nathan Hindmarsh
12. Nathan Cayless
13. Glenn Morrison

14. Dean Widders
15. Lee Hopkins / Dummy half player (maybe Webster)
16. Chad Robinson
17. Another Forward (Afamasaga, Moi Moi, Curtis, Cordoba...etc)

I can't believe you're leaving out Tahu- we didn't sign him to play Reserve Grade.

Geez we spent an awful lot of money to not have Tahu in the Top 17!! ;-)

Let's not make this another 2005 thread!!

Bradeel has pointed out my point perfectly. When your leading playmaker is involved in so many losing sides someone has to say well maybe he needs to accept NOT ALL but some responsibility.

And to say the results would not have been any different with Witty in the side is here say, and guess what we will never know!!

Some other facts I would like to mention.
1. Wagon outsise Thorman does not help.
2. His long kicking game is not that bad really
3. He is not playing behind our best pack of "go forward" forwards

1. Witts actual NRL win loss ratio is well above 50% and even better in Prems
2. He is the best goal kicker we have in the club
3. Why sign him for 4 years if no confidence in his ability

As I have indicated in a previous post M Witt has never played in front of our best forwards! Debut for the Eels in our 2nd half of the year charge into the finals in 2003. Not selected in 1st grade until our win against Newcastle in round whatever, played out of his skin against the Roosters which we won when no-one gave us a chance.

At a guess I think his NRL loss ratio would be something like.
12 wins from 19 games. How many halfbacks would have those stats????
And yes they will be playing in September, but no us!!!

Circumstance is a huge bias in this case. His record includes the end of last year with that dream run we had. Thorman doesn't have that same full of momentum forward pack in front of him. Witt this season is the only relevant stat.

Aren't they reasons why you need to look past the 0-7 thing?

This is always a dumb stat.

Nathan Hindmarsh has a pretty weak win/loss ratio over the last two years. We beat manly by 50 without him, lets punt him

THAT'S WHAT I'VE BEEN TRYING TO TELL YOU!

Nah, just joking.

It's true it's not entirely Thorman's fault, but the decisions he makes when on the field are his fault, like chipping it when in his own half, or grubbering for himself when his outside backs are in open space screaming for the ball.

I really think Witt is talented.

And imagine him playing behind this pack in '05 (one of the many possible packs):

8. Stringer
9. Riddell
10. Vella
11. Hindmarsh
12. Cayless (C)
13. Morrison

And you even have people like Cannings, Afamasaga and Robinson yet to fit in.

That is a great pack.

I say we reserve judgement of Witt's talent or lack thereof until we see him play behind our strongest forward pack.

But we haven't reserved judgement on Thorman?

Yes.

But:

* Thorman played in the English equivalent of Origin

* Thorman played for Great Britain A team

Theoretically, he's a rep quality player. And he really should do better.

Don't get me wrong, had he stayed, I wouldn't mind him playing 5/8, but he's not. And he is no good at halfback.

I think the stat that is more relevant than Thorman's 0-7 is that Brian Smith has only chosen to play two playmakers together in the halves (including even a bench spot) 4 times out of 20 games!

That's only four times that two of Dykes, Witt and Thorman have played together in the halves! And that's been mostly by selection choice, not injury. How can we expect to win games with such predicatble playmaking in attack. Very easy for other teams to shut us down. #-o
