It seems other sports pick an area they want to expand into, put money into the sport there and work with local clubs/investors to start up the club.
We would be better off following this path.
Precisely this. The NRL needs to "pick winners" ie determine what the next strategic location(s) are, THEN figure out the best model to make them happen in a successful way.

Just throwing the door open to bids from where-ever is almost akin to saying "we don't know what the best choice is, so tell us why it should be your location" I used to think this was a good way to do it, but it just seems too indecisive now.

They seem to have kinda made the call with Perth & PNG but having the ownership & management structure still up in the air with Perth is crazy... and having no clear determination on team 20's location is crazy... at least last time they said in no uncertain terms it was a Brisbane 2 bid round.

As expected given Vlandys said this three weeks ago. Question still remains will they get a Perth club in for tv by 2028 or just go with png and hope the nine games is enough to interest tv.

always had my doubts, lets not forget this was never an nrl strategy, it was a politis good idea in a chairs meeting,

So rugba league wasting everyone’s time and money again and ending up looking incompetent.
As if Perth's 10-20k viewers are that valuable, it's the 9th game that's the value proposition

If the NRL does end up running its own team, will the clubs still demand a licence fee? Or will they be promised a share of profits if the club ever gets sold?

So far we have:
- no bids that meet whatever criteria the ARLC has set for admission
- the ARLC coming out and saying we basically don't want private ownership so most bids have wasted their time and money
- Brisbane bids also wasted their time and money
- PNG is the only 'bid' that makes the cut after the ARLC negotiated a licence fee with the Australian Government using taxpayers money. No govt money, no PNG team. Looks like its built on solid foundations from day 1.

Sounds like a successful expansion bid process so far and should be used as a study case by Harvard and other leading business schools around the world.
I don't think there was a quote from anyone at the NRL about the private ownership, just the opinion of the article writer

Or the game is finally valuing itself correctly and this action can been seen as a positive.

We don’t need to react as if the sky is falling every time some news break that wasn’t predicted.

Abdo is quoted again as saying it won’t stop the game having expansion as a priority and moving towards 20 teams.
Yes people are confusing actual quotes from Abdo and Vlandy's for bullshit made up by journos in articles

Sounds like the Perth bid is close to being over the line

Looks like you’re hopes for a job off Cummins might eventuate
Is this reported anywhere? Tried the Facebook groups but all I see are hysterical rants from Perth Red there.

Whilst I don't think the NRL has handled the process as well as you'd hope, at least David Moffett isn't getting his tentacles in the sport anytime soon. Anyone who championed the South Island Kea bid really need to read up on their RL history and give their heads a wobble, that man is toxic.

Red and black bear has good solid info on the bid

He’s been saying all along negotiations are being finalised with new Sydney investors being involved

There’s other issues being sorted not just the license fee

Seems like this what soon to be happening with Perth, I would probably suggest it's more likely going to happen with a south Island bid also down the track

Hopefully, there needs to be strategy and investment from head office for these 2 areas.

not sure if this was already posted, I couldn't see it anywhere. Apologies if it has.

Peter V’landys pushes NRL expansion aspirants to up their game

ARL Commission boss Peter V’landys insists that expansion is not dead - but warned those bidders hoping to join the big league that they had arrived at the last-chance saloon.

ARL Commission boss Peter V’landys has warned expansion hopefuls to lift their games after Queensland’s hopes of winning a fifth NRL licence suffered a crippling blow.
V’landys insists fresh expansion is not dead but the ARLC chief has put prospective consortiums on notice after eight proposals - including three from Queensland - were formally rejected by the NRL.
Breaking his silence on the slew of bid rejections, V’landys lashed the consortia for taking the expansion process for granted, declaring the prospective NRL hopefuls had arrived at the last-chance saloon.
The Brisbane Tigers and a Central Queensland consortium had tabled bids, while Ipswich’s western corridor joined forces with Newtown to form a Jets alliance in the hope of winning a licence.
The NRL has devised a masterplan to expand to a 20-team league, with the Western Bears and Papua New Guinea initially slated as the 18th and 19th franchises to enter the big league in 2027 and 2028 respectively.

But after rejecting a host of bids, including a Perth consortium behind the Western Bears and a trio of Christchurch-based New Zealand teams, the NRL’s expansion process is at a crossroads.
Papua New Guinea’s $600 million bid, backed by Australia’s Federal government, is the only palatable proposal thus far and V’landys made it clear the NRL hopefuls must shape up - or ship out.
“They all just took it for granted,” V’landys said.
“We asked for a business case from each of the interested bid teams and quite simply, they don’t stack up.
“At the moment, their bids aren’t good enough.
“The PNG bid is going well, but it is still to be finalised and the next step is to go to the (existing NRL) clubs for consultation.
“The other bids now realise they haven’t gone far enough.
“They (the rejected bids) want a chance to review their bids and we’re happy to consider that - but they need to do more.”
The NRL’s decision will come as a particular shock for the Brisbane Tigers, who were unsuccessful during the code’s most recent expansion foray three years ago, when their Firebirds bid lost out to the Redcliffe Dolphins for the 17th licence.
The Easts Leagues-backed operation is a financial juggernaut with cash reserves of $25 million, total assets of $57.4m and equity of $52.4m.

Meanwhile, the Ipswich Jets, who have struck an agreement with Newtown, are adamant the NRL cannot ignore Brisbane’s booming western corridor region, including Toowoomba, which is being targeted by the AFL.
But unless the Brisbane Tigers and Jets make urgent improvements to their bids, the door will shut on a fifth Queensland NRL club.
“We haven’t ruled out another team in Queensland but the Brisbane bids failed as well,” V’landys said.
“We want those consortiums to show us where a new fan base is and that they won’t be stealing fans from the Broncos, Titans or Dolphins.
“One of the reasons the Dolphins were admitted to the NRL in the last process was because they were able to demonstrate how they would bring a new fanbase to rugby league.
“And they have done that.”
V’landys will arrive in New Zealand on Sunday for Australia’s Pacific Championships clash against the Kiwis in Christchurch.
The ARLC boss will use the trip as a part fact-finding mission on Christchurch’s suitability for an NRL team and he is adamant expansion is not dead at this stage.
“Expansion isn’t off at all,” he said.
“Things are still looking positive, but we have major expectations around what a bid must deliver.
“We’re not just going to give away licences and accept any bid because we have an interest in expanding.

“Our discussions with PNG have gone well and we will now take it to the clubs as part of the consultation process.
“We’re not dealing with the Perth consortium but I’ve had talks with the Western Australian premier (Roger Cook) and he is just as committed as he always was to an NRL team.
“A second New Zealand team is absolutely still an option. I am going over there on Sunday for the Test match so I will have a good look at the region.
“These consortiums need to have a strong business case that shows how coming into the competition is going to bring a lot of benefits to the game of rugby league.
“If those benefits aren’t there and the investment isn’t there, well, we won’t go ahead with expansion.
“But the initial plan (for 19 teams in 2028) is still possible depending on how discussions go with the clubs and the WA government.”

Former NRL boss David Moffett was disappointed his Christchurch-based bid was shunned, but vowed to press ahead with plans for the South Island Kea to be part of an expanded competition.
“We are really disappointed to get the notification that our bid had been rejected,” Moffett said.
“We are reviewing it and we will be attempting to address the issues in respect to our bid and we will go back to the NRL and see whether we can provide another bid which meets their requirements.”
The Kea are one of three bids from New Zealand’s south island and Moffett said he was happy to continue working with the NRL.
“We’ve always taken the view especially with my experience in sports administration that it’s entirely within the rights of the NRL to decide when, if and who they are going to choose for an expansion team,” Moffett said.
“We actually respect that.
“We are fully supportive of their decision to go to Perth, PNG and whoever in New Zealand. We will continue to put our best foot forward and try to work out exactly where our bid fell down and address their issues.”

He said the Brisbane bids have to show how they can get new fans without hurting the broncos titans and dolphins which really rules out easts tigers

There's 3 bids in Christchurch, surely an alliance is on the cards. PVD is there today! He'll see a sold out test, the construction of a new stadium and a vibrant city full of enthusiasm for a team of their own, new fans! New market! And talent aplenty!
Get it done!

What a spectacular clusterf**k.

The NRL has botched this beyond belief.

We've gone from 20 bids!! To one high risk low return government slush fund option only.

What a f**king stupid thing for a Chairman to say also, "I'm there for a few hours today, so I'll check it out and report back"

As I said previously: the NRL should outline exactly what is required for a new licence.

That way the bids have something to aim for and can drop out if it's not feasible to meet the requirements.

There's ego at work here, V'landys likes powerplaying with these bids.

Clubs dont pay flight costs. Thanks for your insights, didn’t realise you had set up an nrl club and knew the costs, you should have offered to write their budget plan lol.

wa govt is building the club a centre of excellence and $10mill of that $30mill was earmarked to be spend on the firs 3-4 years facility development at Ken Allen field until the CofE is ready.

bears run women’s teams, hm ball, sg ball and nsw cup on a budget of $1.9mill a year. I think with $30mill they’d be ok lol.

Add this to list of stuff you have no idea about. That is only in NRL

From Cameron George, who would know of the costs

So $300k for Matts and SG Ball just to travel

Flegg is a longer season and contains a Fiji trip.

NRL also won't pay for the travel back and forth for the fringe guys to pay in NSW Cup or any other staff like development officers to do the same trip

That is before we get to the purchasing or leasing office space and other add ons
