A 50 mill bank guarantee is required

As the NRL confirmed an expansion would take place from 2023, the game’s finances were also on the agenda, with the new club required to have a $50 million bank guarantee to carry it over the next five years without handouts from head office.

If 13 mill a year grants then for each new side an extra 65 million will need to be extracted from broadcasters or obtained from somewhere as one assumes the existing clubs wont take a cut in the grant payments to accommodate any new teams.- Broadcast deals are usually 5 year ones.

Which of course may well mean an 18th team is a fair way off if ever and 18 maybe the limit that the game can afford based on the grant being 13 mill per club. Each Club receiving 65 mill over 5 years

18 teams - extra 65 mill required
19 teams - extra 130 mill required
20 teams - extra 195 mill required

If 18 though it has to be 2 conferences
We’ve just expanded by 1 club for no extra cash (compared to 2018 deal) in the Australian part of the tv deal! The $20mill a year fox increase wa a furphy according to baselinepanther as he claims Vlandys had already signed us up to fox until 2027 for $20million less than the 2018 deal!

effectively nine and fox have got more content and a second brisbane club for zero more dollars than they agreed to pay in the previous tv deal!

You get them down on wa south coast as well but much rarer.
was snorkelling at rotto yesterday, awesome place.

Beautiful place.

I didn’t know they were also found off the island. I thought that they were on the Island because predators like cats were wiping out their numbers? Either way, I hope their numbers are increasing because they are cool little animals.

The Quokkas would definitely stand out on the world stage.

Every time a celebrity poses with one, and everyone googles it, the Perth Quokkas would be second on the search engine. It's an easy choice for a neutral to follow.

The Pirates would only be on page 2 or 3, and behind at least two other pro sports teams.

Brisbane Firehawks are the only bid with those reserves.

It would be unique I’ll give you that. It would be interesting to see if anybody talented in that department, could do a mock logo.

Australian cities are very good. They may not be as exciting as Paris, Rome, Tokyo or New York but they are highly liveable so we are pretty lucky in this country. There are some really nice places up your way that’s for sure.
Australia is the best place to live.

I don’t think even they have $50mill in cash asset. I guess a bank guarantee is just an agreed future loan, which to achieve they’d look at your earning potential and asset base. If that’s the criteria for admission then only a handful of LC’s could enter the nrl in the future, or some very rich owners. You can kiss goodbye to nz2 if that’s a criteria.

doesnt even make sense, it’s like the nrl saying they think a club might earn zero revenue over 5 years. I suspect it might be an over enthusiastic journalist making it up, probably to promote the dolphins bid which seemed to be the case with the media.

Sydney's demographics have changed so much since the 90s though. Way more immigrants plus also the inner suburbs becoming more and more gentrified and very unaffordable. I read somewhere Sydney is in the top few least affordable cities in the world so is there really anymore marketshare for Rugby League there?
Meanwhile cities like Perth and Adelaide have few sports options during winter, Perth at least would have a lot of expats from the eastern states and the UK who could follow an NRL team. Even the born and bred sandgropers can get behind the NRL team when their AFL team is having a poor year. There have been so many Broncos fans who have jumped on the Lions the last couple of years (broncos are down, lions are up)- you could easily replicate that dynamic in Perth for NRL. It defies belief that they don't want to try it....

Don't know what the first part has to do with anything?! There should be NRL teams in Adelaide & PerthPerth

At the moment with covid & nobody going anywhere it isn't. Otherwise it's a bitch.
In Melbourne there's a direct route from pretty everywhere to the MCG. Here you have to stuff around with multiple public transport connections or just get stuck in traffic
Getting to Lang Park ain't easy. If I get the free shuttle bus then traffic delays in the CBD add a lot of time to the commute. Lining up for the bus after a game is an even bigger ordeal.

What about the Bears. News Corp dont care about perth or adelaide they just want a full stadium that looks good on tv they dont care where it is played.
You'd be correct they don't care about Perth as News Corp has no presence in the city as their major newspaper is owned by Seven.

Why they wouldn't care about Adelaide I don't know, they own our only daily newspaper so you'd think it'd be in their best interests to care.

Why...newspapers are dieing.
News Corp can still sell national advertising with a presence in Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne.

As much as we would like Perth and Adelaide in our comp in some format, NC show no interest at all in this happening.

WA is also dominated by labor and we know News don't approve of that either.

You’re right but it shows why we’ll never compete. The game doesn’t have the stomach for it

RL would had to have seriously tried to grow it's supporter base in the last 20 years for it to have failed... I mean can you really fail if you don't try!?

The way the NRL and clubs are set up financially there's almost no commercial pressure or incentive for the vast majority of clubs to invest in growing their fanbase, or consumer base if we are being more accurate.

I mean why would a club waste time and resources on getting more people through the gate, buying merch, etc, etc, if they can rely on their leagues club and/or TV grant to sustain them? It'd just be creating extra work for themselves and distracting from what they think really matters; winning premierships.

Yes. It's called failing your administrative duties and sport. To not try in anything that you are meant to do and actually put in charge to propagate and make stronger is to egregiously fail your duty. It is like a soldier failing to fire his gun at the enemy and just standing aside so they can walk through the gate. Take the freakin shot! If you get killed doing it then tough. Sad but that is why you are there. Same goes for running the NRL.

So when you talk about the setup, they did that to themselves with spineless and we administrators allowing the clubs and players to have all the power and then dictate terms and where all the money goes. Fight them to the death. If they screw you and remove you, tough.

That is what the game needs a fighter that will not give a crap about his own consequences but only the games. A real Soldier. If they remove you, then the next man up. Same thing. The people are watching. Most are on your side. We know that many of the journos are on the side of their mates in club land so when the negative stories start to come out thick and fast, stay the course.

Don't give in. Don't back down. Keep firing your gun and take whatever shots they level at you, but come out and hammer them in press conferences with detailed explanations so the brain dead public can have a clue as to what and why the fight is happening. As they say, you can't win a fight with an adversary that buys ink by the barrel. So you need to make sure that you are in the press often with real clear messaging as to why you are taking on these clubs and players. Show and tell the vision to the public in detail. Let them see. They will support and back you if there is a clear vision that will help and make the game bigger and better. Get on the front foot whenever they are trying to scuttle you or your ideas and vision. Transparency is your greatest weapon. They will lie. Again don't be shy in correcting those lies and hitting them back harder with whatever skeletons they have and trust me journos and clubs have many skeletons and weaknesses that a strong and competent administrator can take aim at.

We need V'Landys to go Gorilla ape sh*t on their arse and take the power back and only then will the game be in a position to make the truly hard and necessary decisions to rise and be number one again. Some will say that we don't need another schism in the game. Sure but all the clubs are now tied to the ARLC by contract, so they can't go anywhere. So fight them to free the game to be able to rule from the top, not the tail. It's a fight well worth having, and if we don't have it, we are just going to get more of the same.

Of course none of this will happen and we will just move along at a snail pace, while the AFL cruise through our heartland and all of Australia in a air conditioned, wired for sound, drink stocked bar and bikini girls filled stretch limo.
