Player Ratings: Eels vs Bulldogs
Posted by Phil Sim on 15/08/2005 03:04:46 PM | 2 Comments Awesome performance by the Eels saw us give three nines this week. Timana Tahu was everyone’s man of the match and the Herculean effort of Nathan Cayless was hard to miss. But PJ Marsh had an enormous impact in this match and really laid the platform for the Eel’s attack.

We awarded eights all over the park starting with Joel Reddy for a terrific match on debut, Eric Grothe who bounced back to form, both halves for controlling the game so well and to most of the starting forwards who totally outshone the Bulldogs pack.

Joel Reddy (8)
Considering the occasion – his NRL debut in front of a capacity crowd – Reddy played with aplomb. Couple of little errors early but he got better as the match went on and capped off a fine game with a try. Without question, is top grade material.

Luke Burt (7)
Another good game. Showed great vision and composure to chip the ball back inside for the Dean Widders try.

Timana Tahu (9)
Absolutely ripped the Bulldogs to shreds. A dazzling showcase of pace, footwork and power he clocked up a trio of line breaks and a hat-trick of tries. Also put on a couple of big hits. We were tempted to give our first ten of the year, but we had to blame someone for the Bulldogs final try and it was probably Tahu that just overread the play and created the opportunity for Grimaldi to slip a pass.

Ben Smith (6)*
Played despite being ill and didn’t let anyone down. He came from the field early in the second half but was solid to that point and did fabulously well to stand in a tackle and lay-on Eric Grothe’s first try. * Points reflect early departure from the game

Eric Grothe (8)
Down on form for the past couple of weeks, Guru was back to somewhere near his best. Much more deeply involved and got a couple of opportunities to show off his amazing pace and power in bagging a couple of tries.

John Morris (8)
We don’t think it’s coincidental that when Morris went through his form slump, so too did the Eels. There is no more important player in the team than Morris – he gives the side balance and options and when he’s playing well Parramatta will always be tough to beat. Distributed the ball well and played a key hand in a number of tries.

Tim Smith (8)
On first inspection, Smith had a relatively quiet game. Yes, he kicked well and controlled the play but he didn’t appear dominant. Then you go back through the match and realise he came up with three big plays – the kick for Hindmarsh’s opening try, the neat little step that created so much space for Tahu’s second try and the quick hands that created the overlap in the Dean Widders try. You know someone’s good when they have this kind of impact in one of their quieter games.

Nathan Cayless (9)
Talk about leading from the front! We don’t think Cayless has even been going better. He made over 200 metres according to NRL Stats from 24 hitups. His try was testament to his efforts. He had to run more than 50 metres in supporting the play and then getting over for the try – no mean feat for a front rower getting through the kind of workload he’s been taking on.

Mark Riddell (7)
Didn’t get as much game time as he would have liked, but he was good early making a couple of penetrating dummy half runs and then he scored the final try after fending off the not-so-tiny Willie Mason.

Paul Stringer (8)
Excellent game. Did plenty of work, was always difficult to pull down and created some good second phase play with three offloads. The Eel’s bookends had it all over their more celebrated opposites.

Nathan Hindmarsh (8)
It wasn’t really Hindy’s game. He wasn’t called on to do nearly as much tackling as he typically does and actually got to spend a fair bit of time on the bench. Took his share of hit-ups without creating too much damage but opening try was a key moment of the game.

Glenn Morrison (8)
Morrison’s combination with Tahu has added a new dimension to the Eel’s game. Always looked dangerous lurking around the left side and he topped the tackle count for the Eels.

Chad Robinson (8)
Just about Chad’s best game of the year for Parramatta. Was unlucky not to bag a try when he ran a good, hard line off a Tim Smith pass that was unfortunately called forward. Made a number of key tackles and made his presence felt in the time he got on the park.

PJ Marsh (9)
Getting better every week. Got plenty of minutes and his constant probing from dummy half had the Bulldogs on the back foot the whole game. Contributed well to the Eel’s kicking game as well.

Dean Widders (8)
Once again had a big impact with a great line break up the middle as well as a try. He doesn’t go nearly as well out in the centres, where he got shifted too after Smith went off but he did his job once again.

Adam Peek (6)
Another who didn’t see a lot of game-time and contributed just a work-man like effort while he was on the park.

Fuifui Moimoi (7)
Didn’t quite have the same impact as the week prior until his magnificent bust, break-away, fend and offload that set up Timana Tahu’s final try. It was an exhibition of sheer athleticism and was our favourite moment from a memorable match
