THE family of a disabled security guard who appeared on The Footy Show have slammed Channel 9 after Paul "Fatty" Vautin said he was drunk.
Bouncer Greg Stacey was on the door at the Caxton Hotel on State of Origin night when he was door-stopped by Allan "Robbo'' Robinson. The 21-year-old from Manly West in Brisbane, who has benign epilepsy, suffers from slurred speech and learning difficulties.
After he was interviewed by Robinson, the show cut to Vautin who exclaimed "What about security at the Caxton? That bloke was blind. He could hardly talk''.
The incident has also appeared in a major Queensland newspaper, who quoted Caxton Hotel owner Steve Farquhar saying Greg would not be back. He has since told a radio station that they would re-employ him.
Last night, Channel 9 issued an unreserved apology to Greg and his family. They said they will also be issuing an on-air apology. Outraged dad Peter Stacey, from Manly West in Brisbane, revealed they may consider legal action saying his son felt like he had been "raped'' by the media.
"My son was portrayed as a drunk and a person who was drinking on the job and we want Channel 9 to issue an on-air apology,'' Mr Stacey, 47, said.
"Greg had definitely not been drinking and he hardly ever drinks because of his disability. His condition means he does come across as slow, but they've just assumed he's pissed.
"He was startled and his eyes rolled back because he was startled, but they've made a laughing stock of him on national TV. Greg is handling it OK but since then he has been trying to wear dark sunglasses to disguise himself when he leaves the house.''
American football lover Greg has worked as a bouncer for the past 12 months after refusing to stay on disability benefits. "Greg loves his job and he's not bad at it,'' Mr Stacey added.
Channel 9 Head of Sport Gary Burns apologised unreservedly to Greg and his family. "I will be contacting the family and they will also be getting an on-air apology,'' Burns said.
"We did not know he was handicapped and it would never have gone to air if we'd known. We are guilty of assumption but it's an unwitting mistake.''
Why did they not infrom 9 of this when it was filmed FFS
Don't come crying afterwards if you make no effort at the time to ensure that it wouldn't go to air
Maybe the crew filming and editors alike didn't know and genuinely thought he was drunk. The staff at the bar didn't know that Fatty was going to make such a remark and probably with all the commotion outside had no idea of what was going on either. An embarrassing error in the end.
THE Footy Show was under fresh attack yesterday after radio broadcaster Ray Hadley alleged last Thursday's embarrassing pre-recorded segment ridiculing a disabled man was often a deliberate aim of the show.
Host Paul Vautin has apologised for ridiculing Brisbane's Caxton Hotel bouncer Greg Stacey for drunkenness during Thursday's show, when he in fact suffers benign epilepsy, and will issue a public apology this Thursday.
While Stacey is considering legal action against the network, Hadley alleged on air yesterday that former Channel 9 head of sport Gary Burns, who has since returned to Nine to pilot the ailing show, would often send his "Street Talk" staff on to the streets in search of "nuffies".
Nine yesterday rejected the claims.
If true, the allegations question the genuineness of the apology made to Stacey.
"Those were his words, 'Where's the nuffies?'," 2GB presenter Hadley told The Daily Telegraph.
"Their favourite haunt was the old Church St mall at Parramatta (NSW) and (former producer) Glenn Pallister would be sent along with whoever was doing it and Burns used to say, 'Get the nuffies'.
"I did it once and said I'm never doing it again.
"They would search around for homeless people, derelicts, alcoholics, people who look different.
"The Melbourne Footy Show would do the same thing with Sam Newman."
In a further development, Burns was last night reviewing transcripts of Hadley's Continuous Call show and is considering legal action against the broadcaster.
A Nine spokesman said Hadley's claims are "refuted absolutely and categorically".
Nine insiders blame Hadley's attack on a long-standing feud between him and the show's host.
Hadley mentioned several times over the weekend that he was sacked from the show but claimed it was a blessing in disguise.
Vautin did not see the footage before it was aired, which Hadley admitted left him vulnerable to making a mistake. However, Hadley has questioned Nine's claims of an innocent mistake.
"The thing about it is that it was recorded on Wednesday night and it would have been seen by editors, producers and others involved in the show," he said.
"Vautin never looked at the tape, even though hosts usually look at the tape, so he is not as culpable as others, but editors and producers would have seen it."
The segment is most often presented by jockey Allan Robinson.
Hadley has since viewed the Nine footage and believed it was easily apparent that Stacey was suffering from some sort of illness and was not merely drunk.
"There's no doubt they are still targeting disabled, disadvantaged and sometimes people affected by alcohol," he said.
"They had ample time to review the footage and come to the conclusion it would be better not to air, but a cheap laugh was more important."
Its true. When Matt Johns went on a street talk he would interview complete geniuss.
Especially around Parra and Redfern.
