Just got off the phone to a guy at Norths, Manly won both grades quite convincingly. He said it was "5/6 tries to 1" in each respective grade.

Good signs, altho our next trial against Parra this weekend at Brookie should give us a better indication of where we stand. I may head out to this one depending upon the weather.

Info regarding that game will be placed in this thread.

Cheers.

Parra are strong in Matts this year. They have beaten Newcastle and smashed Illawarra on the weekend. I don't think Para are anywhere near as strong in Ball this year. They got smashed by Newcastle and it was even against Illawarra. My tip ; Parra in Matts and Manly in Ball.

You are kiddding about the SG Ball. If you were at the Narabeen camp Jan 22 - 25 you wouldn't bee saying that. SG Ball will struggle this year and the coaching staff know that.

There were a few very promising kids there ( at the camp) but all of them went home (Qld or the bush) when it finished. They were a class above the others. They have been signed by Crusher in the last 12 months but they are not moving down to Manly until next year 2009.

The SGBall will better in 2009 and so will the NYC. Crusher will have picked up some more kids by then.

Is there any particular reason behind that? I agree with what your saying, we might win a few games and be competitive but lose in others but we wont go anywhere near giving it a shake.

Any idea bout our Matts chances? Will Hopoate is still in there  would have to be his third year I'd say .

Young hopa is still in Matts. I thnk they've lost his birth certificate.

As far as the Ball Team. They don't come accross as a skilful team. If they are going to be competitive it will come by playing a simple game style and defend well and keep the error count.

They went ok against the Bears in the bog last week and those type of conditions will suit them.

I think most of the Ball team will only be 16 this year. IIRC, there are plenty of kids that played in Matts last year, so I'd presume most of them will be able to play Ball again in 09.

It'll be interesting to see how we go! All I know is every year we are becoming increasingly competitive in the junior grades which is great for a side with such a poor Rugby League demographic. We're getting there, although like anything good, it'll take time.

*EDIT* April, is there a reason why Crusher couldn't bring the players down from QLD and the bush for the 08 season?

Because they are still at school. Some had options to come to Sydney for part or for the full year.

The recruitment age now is under 15 & 16. After that age the best boys are gone. Crusher has only been on his blitz for 12 months, so it will take another year before we see how good a job he has done.

There are a few boys who are already down.
Big Freddy Edwards a 120kg boy from the Gold Coast, struggling a bit with the training at the moment. Daly Cherry-Evans a half back who was the Brisbane Colts (U19) Player of the Year in 2007. In 2006 he played 1st Grade in Mackay in his father's coached team. I reckon he will end up a hooker like his dad. David Drotni a sec rower from Brisbane

I agree that Manly could have it's best SG Ball team for ages in 2009. Although a couple of these players who I think will make it a good team may go straight through to NYC.

Yeah thats what I thought. I definitely agree with the point your making, we really have to snap the juniors up nice and early otherwise it's too late. With that being said however, we havent really been known as a club that develops a lot of juniors, but I think thats the path we're heading down - and I really like it. Crusher is definitely doing a great job with junior development - just hope he continues with the recruitment 'blitz' as you referred to it as.

I think you have to sacrifice the success of one grade for possible success and experience in the other. Obviously in this case, you want your best juniors playing in the NYC. I'd prefer them to be playing against the level of players in the Toyota Cup as opposed to SG Ball - will only do their game wonders. Just on that matter, Kieran Foran is still eligible for SG Ball, but he'll play the majority of the season in the Toyota Cup, and might even crack first grade in 08, if not, definitely 09.

Just been informed Manly called the trials off due to bad weather. According to a Parra source, half the Parra side where on their way to Brookie when Manly management let them know about the decision. Bit unfortunate really.

Just a bit worried that our preparation coming into this competition has been ordinary. A patchy hit-out against Norths (a team that normally finishes near the bottom of the ladder) - then two weeks off leading into the competition... hmmm.. leaves nothing to be desired IMO.

Anyway, the comp begins next week (Sat 16 February).

Along with Newcastle and the Roosters, Manly has the Bye, however the following matches are being played.

Harold Matts:

Parramatta Eels vs St George Dragons @ Cabramatta Sports Ground
South Sydney Rabbitohs vs Penrith Panthers @ Erskineville Oval
South West Sydney Academy vs Cronulla Sharks @ Kirkham Park, Camden
Balmain Tigers vs Illawarra Steelers @ Leichhardt Oval
Western Sydney Academy of Sport vs Western Suburbs Magpies @ Ringrose Oval
Canberra Raiders vs Central Coast Storm @ Seiffert Oval
Bulldogs vs North Sydney Bears @ The Crest, Bass Hill

SG Ball:

Exactly the same as HM's draw - however Gold Coast Titans replace the South West Sydney Academy:

Gold Coast Titans vs Cronulla Sharks @ Betty Diamond Complex, Tugun
