2010 Goal Kicking

Howabout we start a new thread on 2010 for goal kicking. It is impinging on quite a few different threads and maybe worth concentrating effort into 1 thread.

Benji's efforts for WT last year were too inconsistant. Too many tight games were lost with poor success rates with kicks. Nothing against Benji and he wil be a good fall back kicker if the main kicke is unavaialble but we do need a new kicker. Mark Flanagan from ESL is supposed to be great kicker with high 70's%- but that would mean we have to start him in the main 13 squad. Same as Mullaney from the U20's is a great kicker with high success rate too but again I dont think he should be blooded straight away wiht the big boyas and in the main 13 squad.

So what do we do? Bit the bullet and start Flanagan in the main 13??? Sure, we can, no doubt will be, working with Benji off season but I dont think he is the solution for WT as the main kicker. Could we stick with Benji for a few weeks as main kicker to give Flanagan a chance to get sued to NRL and then slot Flanagan into the main 13 and drop Benji back to part time kicker?

What about Lawrence? Wasn't he a kicker once? Farah has been known to take shots as well...

Problem with that is - Flanagan is only 21 and has hardly played any first grade. Nobody knows whether he'll be up for NRL let alone 80mins a game.

Exactly- we have 2 very good potential kickers given a bit of time but time is the key.

NC- yeah, I forgot about Lawrence & Farah. We need something to cover us in the interim. Whether it is Benji, Lawrence or Farah would be interetsing. I just hope Sheens actually makes it a competition and we really can get the best interim kicker and not just Benji because its Benji.

Good idea.

What was it, 4 games by 2, 1 by 1 point we lost last season?

Was it Benji's goalkicking that cost us those games? Gallant cost us at least 1 that I can recall - the game against Cheaterbury, but outside of that I can't specifically recall it being a goalkicking issue?

Yep, Gallant had an atrocious game with goal kicking that once but he is not a goal kicker- never was (at least NRL level). I have no idea why he kicked on that day- maybe Benji was off the field???

Has anybody seen Lawrence kick in his earlier days? I presume he did alright from the comments of people that say he has the ability.

IMO Farah should've taken the attempt to level up the game at the end.

It was pretty obvious that Gallant's confidence was really low that game, he made a few mistakes and missed a really easy kick earlier on, there was no way he was ever going to make that last attempt with all that pressure on him.

Benji is kicking at 67 % ( just under)
Mullaney at 71%

Interestingly Covell is only kicking at 68%-
Campese 68%
Smith 70 %
Parker 70 %
Luke Burt 77%
progress.gif

Inu over past 3 years 80 %....
Hodgo 82% in 2008 In 2005 just over 83%.

Lawrence Kicked for the Aust schoolboys...

Yep. Plenty of games we scored more or as many tries as the other team but missed the boat on goals kicked.

There were some we won on the same principle, though...

Benji was off the park that day, from memory.

Actually, yes I think you guys are right. Marshall didn't play against Canterbury at all. With SG's kicking on that day, wasn't just referring to the last attempt, moreso all across the game.

But yeah, with SG off to the Cowboys, was more why I mentioned it - As it stands now, we really do fall to Benj. It's not as if he's not capable of hitting them from anywhere, just a consistency issue - that is something he can work on over the off season.

Tuiaki scored 21 tries this season and pretty much all of them were close to the sideline. That's a lot of sideline conversions.

The Tigers can keep Benji as goal kicker if they work out some 5th tackle option closer to the posts.

I dont agree with keeping a sub standard kicker and trying not to utilise a potent attacking tryscoring weapon out wide...

It wasn't so much the amount of goals we missed, it was more that whenever we really needed a conversion to be made, it often wasn't.

C'mon, he's a SUPERSTAR!

I bet he could header one over from the sideline if we needed him to.
