Lets face it, it all comes down to the halves. The rest of the NSW side is not hard to pick.

Ideally i think it should be

6. Campese
7. Pearce

I may be biased but Campese is the best 5/8 NSW has when in form. Pearce is there for his defence plus I think he gives the side good structure. He just lacks in the creativity department.

Shows the slim pickings for 7's in NSW. Been that way for a long time now unfortunately.

Tbh I think the halves pairing will be decided in the opening rounds of the NRL, and the two best halves should be chosen out of: Soward, Pearce, Maloney, Mullen, Campese, Maloney and Carney.

Even though most people want stability we'll certainly have a new halves combo by game 1 2012.

Pearce is almost guarenteed for the number 7 position due to the lack of half backs. Soward's position is a lot more under threat purely because of the competition not because of his performances (although he still wasn't great, just solid).

The thing that got me about Soward's performances is that his long kicking game was not utilised at all (maybe a coaching ploy). Our long kicking game was shocking we were trying to hit ground over trying to make distance because we were worried about Slater getting it on the full.
But I think most of us would much rather he caught it on the full on the 15/20m line then our kicks bouncing around the 40m line

All of those you have named aside from Pearce are 5/8s. Everyone has him at halfback simply because there is no other options aside from Walsh, Gidley or Wallace.

Better the devil you know

Jennings is a very capable defender nowadays. Much better then he use to be.

He might be a better defender than he was when he first started out but there's a difference between holding your own in first grade and facing Inglis at origin level.

I'd be tempted to just put a strong defensive backrower there to counter their favourite and most successful play.

We just need a Matt Scott-esque player cause QLDs props besides him aren't threatening at all.
Civoniceva
Scott
Hannant
Shillington
Lillyman
Taylor

Are very beatable.

Gallen
Mannah
Tolman
Learoyd-Lahrs
Galloway

Can top them

Ah apparently not. Besides Gal's super human effort Game 2 last year our props have had their arses handed to them the past six years. It is and has been our biggest problem over that time. So much so even Stuart and Gallen finally came out and said it publicly last year. About time too. Couldn't care who they pick in the halves and backs, gets some props and the rest will take care of itself.

Yeah true but our prop selections are terrible cause we always choose players who shouldn't be there (King, Merrin) instead of 4 proper props (2 workers and 2 impact props). Stuart will never pick 4 props and I don't think he'll pick 3 either. With Gallen it leaves us with 2 prop positions and we'll get beat if we do that again. My prop rotation would be:

Gallen
Tolman/Snowden/Mannah

Learoyd-Lahrs
Galloway

Gallen may not play prop for his club but he is our best prop. He is one of the best in the country.

It really depends on where the team needs him to play. IMO lock is a much more important part of a side but since we have a plethora of talented backrowers it pushes Gallen to prop. I would agree that he's the best prop but he's also the best lock forward too.

Sims or Williams would be a good impact addition. I wasn't so convinced with T. Williams but thinking again over his last 5-6 rounds of he NRL season and his 4nations he was pretty handy. He still has heaps of improvement but 25 min off the bench could be great for us.

Maybe keep Sims as 18th man to get him use to the team and such, but use Williams over Sims for a couple of years till Sims matures abit more, although he definately did show alot of maturity this year.

A player like D. Taylor (only better) is something we could do with.
8. Mannah
10. Gallen (C)
11. Lewis
12. Bird
13. Stewart

14. Watmough
15. TLL
16. Galloway
17. Williams

That is a very big and explosive bench

Absolutely agree with everything you said. Although it's more likely that Gidley will be in the 17 over Williams I'd prefer the latter + Sims at 18th man. Williams form might drop with Hasler gone though so we'll have to see.
