I'm only on the second page and already I've spotted a kid with his socks down. Code in crisis.

Very interesting, and am eagerly looking forward to comparing it with similar disclosures in years to come.

'The International game and Pacific nations will be strengthened.'

I know it's just words on a page, but this is such a good sentence to read.

Amazing the number of people who complain about a lack of transparency, and there are just a handful of responses in this thread.

Well to be fair, the thread is only 2.5 hours old and doesn't exactly have a title that screams financial accounts.

Fruits of a transparent administration.

Broadcast income before new television deal $101.5m
Non Broadcast income $79m

So now we know that to meet the Strategic Plan target to double non broadcast revenue by 2017, they need to double $79m. And if they keep publishing this report each year we'll be able to judge exactly how well Dave Smith is doing in meeting that target.

I'm no accountant, so ploughing through tables of figures is not really my idea of a good time. But there appears two key figures from 2012.

The first is the broadcast revenue of $101,563,667 and the second is the other income of $79,215,172.

So it now appears from 2013 onward we are looking at, roughly, a whopping 100% increase on broadcast revenue! The other income would mainly be sponsorships and government money, and we can only speculate what percentage increase that will amount to. It is safe to say that it will increase by a fair margin as the game becomes more attractive to sponsors and smarter deals are made.

Seeing these figures in black and white is interesting, and brings home just how much money the game can accumulate and spend.

Very pleased to see, many know my big whinge at "state of the game" report time was no financial info on how the game was travelling. Good to see the Commission value their stakeholders enough to share this information and be transparent in their operations.

The only problem I have with the financials this time is that the 2011 numbers are totally different due to the different structure they had then. Hard to draw too many conclusions...

ARLC chairman Grant bullish about future

Ian Mccullough, AAP
February 21, 2013, 11:09 pm

ARL Commission chairman John Grant says rugby league is in the best financial position in its history and the future is bright for all 16 NRL clubs.

The Commission and club chiefs met for their annual conference in Sydney on Thursday where details of the 2012 financial report were tabled and details of the annual grant for 2013 and beyond outlined.

Figures showed the ARLC made $176 million in revenue for 2012 and have projected a rise of 13 per cent to $284m this year, increasing to $323m by 2017.

Clubs will receive $7.1m this year - a million dollars more than the salary cap signed off by the Rugby League Players Association last week.

But Grant explained the structure of the grant will be changed over the next five years, with a means-tested style of funding to clubs.

The structure will be put in place by June 30 and Grant said while it was important clubs are able stand on their own two feet, those who are not as financially successful as others shouldn't be punished.

"The game has been used to a fixed grant where all clubs get the same," Grant said.

"But all clubs are not the same. Some need more help than others.

"We will start to give variable grants and that will depend on a number of factors.

"If you look at the 16 clubs, it's fair to say some have better access to revenue generation.

"We would look at it and say 'why would we fund a club that can do this the same as one that can't?'

"We're moving away from grants and subsidies but we will not cut funding to clubs that need it."

The ARLC has a bank balance of $43m, due to the $40m paid up front by the Nine Network as part of the new broadcast deal agreed late last year.

Grant said this will increase dramatically over the next five years and said the appointment of new chief executive Dave Smith is key to driving revenue streams.

Smith has been thrown in at the deep end having to deal with the Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority's investigation into serial doping in sport less than a month into his new role.

Despite the turmoil and uncertainty surrounding the investigation, Grant said there has been some positives to take from the situation - primarily the performance of Smith.

"When you make a decision on key appointments ... you hope it's the right choice.

"Then you get an event like this and think 'yes, we got it right.'

"He's probably done six months learning in two weeks.

"We win on all fronts. Our response to the whole thing has been measured and considered and we have also got an integrity unit up and running now earlier than we had planned."

With the Commission having been in place for almost a year, Grant claims off-the-field, League is unrecognisable from the position it was in 12 months ago.

"There was a paucity in the game up until now," he said.

"This game has been run on the smell of an oily rag. There was nothing in the bank and no investment in the future but it stayed strong.

"Now we are in a position where we can start to leverage the success of the game and start to grow it.

"It's why the financials are so important."

Great to see the full financials finally

Finally showed how piss weak the old broadcast deal was ...

So frustrating to be cycling over that, whilst the AFL was generating double the revenue

I think we are in for exciting times. 17 years on a treadmill is finally over
