For the first time in the history of the VB NSW Cup, the NSWRL will have the luxury of working with a fixed NRL draw, as it looks to formalise its own schedule for the upcoming 2013 season.
Following a dramatic climax to 2012, the 2013 season is already being eagerly anticipated despite it still being some three and a half months away.
Bob Saunders, Manager of the VB NSW Cup, knows he will have his hands full with the complexities of the draw but is looking forward to the challenge and also the season ahead.
“We are now in a somewhat fortunate position where we will have the benefit of seeing the first 20 rounds of the NRL draw prior to the formulation of our VB NSW Cup draw,” Mr Saunders said.
“This will present us with the opportunity to better schedule our matches for both our competing clubs and also their respective fan bases.
“In years gone past there have been instances where an NRL side and their VB NSW Cup affiliate have had scheduling clashes which has prevented fans and players from being able to both watch and play in these matches.
“We will certainly be looking to be as diligent as possible in relation to the marrying up of our (VB NSW Cup) draw and the NRL draw where possible to help benefit all stakeholders as best as we can, but of course with this said, there will always be instances where there is some cross over, and clubs and fans alike will need to be understanding of that.
Mr Saunders also pointed out that the draw formulation process is of the utmost importance and cannot be rushed, therefore ruling out an exact time and date for its upcoming release.
“Obviously we have looked at some preliminary scheduling however the process will really begin in earnest for us when we have the final confirmation of the NRL draw.
“We, like most rugby league lovers, are eagerly anticipating its release, and expect it to be forthcoming in the next few days, and from that point, we would aim for our draw to be made available to our clubs and the greater public as soon as possible.”
And there is no wonder that the VB NSW Cup draw is one of the most anticipated of recent memory, with new sides in the Wyong Roos and the Wests Tigers joining the fold as well as more marquee matches being taken to the bush being mooted as well.
