Is anyone else in disbelief that Hodkinson is the NSW halfback? He is a solid first grader and will probably be a first grade halfback until he retires but I don't really see anything in his game that screams origin halfback?

I know NSW don't have a lot of options and i am glad that Pearce is not inviolved this year cause he is in the same boat, I'm just not sure the logic of Hodkinson.

I'd go with Mullen or A.Reynolds, I think they are both better players and have more "big play" moments in them.

I too would have gone with Mullen but a few things go against him imo. Newcastle are going shit and he hasn't set the world on fire since returning from injury and he plays on the right (Hodko plays on the left)

The things going against A reynolds are his lack of running game and he has done SFA in big games (eg semi finals) when souths have needed him. His form has been average this year, as has souths. He also plays on the right.

And for some reason the selectors wanted the 6 and 7 combo from the same club (which is strange because they play on opposites sides and will be lucky to link together on more than a handful of occasions.

Pearce has been a massive turd at Origin level. Worst kicking game I've ever seen from a supposed rep level half. He's just been rubbish for NSW and doesn't deserve another crack.

Plus he comes across as an arrogant little shit.

It all comes down to Hayne and Farah.

NSW have called Josh Jackson and Will Hopoate into their squad for Wednesday's opening State of Origin match.
The Canterbury back-rower will join the squad as 18th man with Hopoate the 19th man. Jackson played in Canterbury's 28-12 loss to the Sydney Roosters on Friday.
Both players will travel to Coffs Harbour on Saturday and will fly with the rest of the squad to Brisbane on Sunday
“We wanted to bring in a forward and a back to cover all bases,” Blues coach Laurie Daley said. “Both players have been in terrific form for their clubs and deserve the opportunity to spend some time in camp.”

Hopoate's call-up to the Blues squad caps a remarkable comeback for the Parramatta centre, who returned to rugby league this year after two seasons out of the game while undertaking a Mormon mission. He played his only match for NSW, starring in the centres in 2011, before leaving the game at the end of that season.

He was damn unlucky not to make it in for Game 1, in my opinion.

Tupou is a good young talent but he is still very raw. His aerial game is truly among the best in the NRL but he is still quite inconsistent in other important areas (defence, meterage) and his selection represents a fair gamble by Daley and company.

I actually had Taufua ahead of Hopoate as my preferred winger before Rd.10 but after Taufua's yips under the high ball against Newcastle I would be very hesitant to elevate him to Origin this year.

As any other Parra fan can attest to, Hopoate simply goes from strength to strength with each week of the competition. His defensive reads are among the best in the NRL and he is superb under the high ball. In the last two weeks his acceleration, footwork and initial contact when carrying the ball have come on in leaps and bounds and you can't help but feel that he still isn't near his peak form.

Awesome player and I'm glad he is at Parra!

Totally agree forty. I was of the opinion that it was too early to pick hopoate for game 1 but after his last two weeks I would have picked him ahead of Tupou.

Hoppa just looks a class above, he is calm and consistently comes up with the right play.

I'm worried Tupou might get overawed by the occasion and may get targeted by the maroons.

Hoppa is still not quite back to his absolute best form but he is getting close. He has proven he is a big game player and will handle anything that origin throws at him.

I not sure why people think it is to early to pick hoppa, all that counts is form and I reckon hoppa has been showing better form than most NSW centres/wingers in addition he has experience at origin level.

we got dis...

He was part of the Melbourne grand final team of 2009 that found a way to limit the influence of Jarryd Hayne and Queensland fullback Billy Slater says Hayne is the man the Maroons must shut down in order to win Game One next Wednesday night.
Hayne's undeniable form over the past month for Parramatta made a difficult choice between him and Josh Dugan as New South Wales fullback incredibly straightforward for Blues coach Laurie Daley with his dismantling of St George Illawarra last weekend reminiscent of the 2009 Qualifying Final at Kogarah.
On that occasion Hayne made a number of breaks from the back-field and scored one of the greatest individual tries in finals history and Slater knows that in a NSW backline with plenty of strike power, Hayne is the No.1 gun.
"There are a lot of dangerous players in their side but certainly Jarryd Hayne's their No.1," Slater said.
"He's a great player. I've played alongside Jarryd before and especially last year in the World Cup, that Final was an outstanding performance from him.
"He seems like he's matured a lot and settled a lot in his role as captain of the Parramatta Eels and is really enjoying that role and he's playing some great football.
"We're going to have to defend as a unit to make sure that wherever he is we're covering him."
Ten years on from scoring an extraordinary individual try of his own that will live long in the annals of Origin folklore, Slater conceded that the achievement of maintaining his place during such a period of success for Queensland is a greater source of pride.
"You get told as a young fella that your time will come and go pretty quick and as a young fella you sort of take it with a grain of salt and think it will last forever but it certainly does go really quick," said Slater, who made his Origin debut in Game One 2004, a Series the Maroons lost 2-1.
"Although it does feel a long time ago that I did score that try I feel I'm a lot different player to what I was back then but it is something that I'm very proud of and probably a lot more proud to be able to say that I've played for Queensland for 10 years.
"You certainly think about your game and are a lot more measured in what you do on the field these days. I was probably a little bit erratic to say the least when I first came into Origin but I suppose that made me the player I was back then and I've tried to evolve and become a more complete player."
Slater missed Game Three of the 2005 Series – the last NSW Series win – after playing in games one and two and says while the pressure to maintain this unprecedented period of success intensifies each year, showing pride in the state jersey is the greatest motivation.
"There's always pressure on ourselves. There's a lot of pressure externally and internally but no one wants to lose and there's always that fear of complacency so that certainly drives us," said Slater, who will play Origin No.23 on Wednesday night.
"Pulling on the Queensland jersey and not letting that down is probably just as fearful as being the first losing side after eight years."

remember in the run up to the semis in 09 every week in the papers someone from the opposition said "I'll stop hayne" and every week they would all rush up on him leaving burt & reddy unmarked
