There's an article in the SMH (below for link) which outlines the massive recruitment drive that the Saints are on for 2014. It states that the cap goes to 6.3M next season and it got me wondering what we are planning to do.

We have a swag of players off contract and I haven't seen us linked to nor signing anyone for next year.

What's the grand strategy from Bennett because right now we don't have the cattle to win a comp.

Don't worry too much about recruitment as guaranteed Wayne knows who he wants. We are a third of the way in. We are going ok. We have lost by three and one point respectively in our last two losses. This top four crap is a myth. At this level it doesn't mean s###! I would not be surprised if Storm finish fifth or sixth and crank it come finals time. I think a couple of big signatures is not beyond us.

Don't have much of an idea about who is still off contract but for me:

1. Retain Korbin. We already have this in motion so that's a positive sign.
2. Hooker. Apparently Rein is off-contract so I'd be going after him, a great prospect.
3. Another forward. Whether it's a prop or an attacking backrower I'm not too fussed. If it ends up being a backrower we can throw Cuthbertson/Rochow into the front row without losing much.

I think we are fine for backs, though I obviously wouldn't sneeze at someone like Folau if the situation arose.

Mitch Rein and Sam Williams would be great buys. I said it in another thread but Williams would be great under a coach who actually develops like no other in Bennett. MCCrone has nothing on Williams for ability. Nothing.

Matt Gidley has said a number of times that our priority is re-signing players first so expect to see Sims, Faalogo, Tahu, Frei, W Smith, Naiqama etc to extend soon.

We've been strongly linked to Weyman so there's the prop we're after, I don't think we need much else, we have a really strong squad (when fully fit) they just have to learn consistency and have more of a dig in games.

Weyman? No thanks. I'd rather us get somebody who actually plays more often than college me had sex.

No reason why we shouldn't join in the raids on English talent.

Mids already stated we are not after Weyman. If we went after any English players Danny McGuire would be top of my list. Even at 30 he is very tough and all class. Stand out player in WCC every season just about. Has it all. Speed, skill and strength.
