Once again the roosters fans showing the rest of sydney the way. 20k roosters fans turned up as opposed to 7.5k manly and panthers fans.

To be fair to cronulla they were in the same situation as us in terms of hosting an interstate team.

Eels crowd will be interesting next week..

Eels bandwagon in finals is strong. I'll be disappointed if they don't bring atleast 30k to Saturdays game, despite the opponent

I think tigers got 31k vs warriors in week 2 in 2011 so no reason eels can't do the same

btw

on a glorious sunday afternoon
because we won't cull Sydney teams as its unsavoury & upsets people who demand the right to have a club they won't support
then we need to get tough in other ways , as a sport , Sydney is the games biggest asset , & the biggest reason the sport can't progress at the same time
Culling teams won't do anything but further alienate an already disenfranchised NRL fan base. Culling a team just means those fans stop following the game full stop.
So the AFL crowd aggregate for week 1 finals tripled the NRL.

Maybe all the attention our poor crowds is copping everywhere, including the mainstream media will make Greenberg and the clubs start to contemplate some strategies. But who am I kidding, it won't happen.

I got excited for two seconds thinking that that might occur...

But then I realised our CEO thinks upgrading ANZ stadium will magically draw in the crowds

Interesting that the Roosters preliminary final has already been pencilled in for Allianz Stadium.

If the Cowboys win next week, yes, that would be the appropriate venue as the crowd will most likely be in the 30-40k range, which fits with Allianz's capacity

However, if Parramatta win, ANZ Stadium would get 60k+ (especially on Saturday night, where a larger crowd will be achieved compared to Friday night, where traffic would be an issue for those who don't live out in Western Sydney). NRL are selling this matchup short if they hold it at Allianz.

Having it at allianz does lock around 15-20k out in the event it is against the eels but it would be a cracking 42k at SFS, the place would be rocking like saints/tigers 2005.

Full Allianz is the best. The Tigers/saints game was electric when I was there

Roosters deservedly earnt a home prelim, so if it's at Allianz so be it

I understand what you mean. That Saints/Tigers 2005 PF had one of the best atmospheres I've seen, but even back then, it was a mistake having that game at Allianz. Given the massive media hype leading up to that match, it would've gone very close to selling out ANZ Stadium. Parra/Nth QLD should've been at Allianz and Saints/Tigers at ANZ.

Unfortunately, during 1999-2006 (before home finals were extended to weeks 2 and 3 from 2007 onwards), the NRL had a contract with Allianz/ANZ Stadiums for week 2/3 finals which didn't allow flexibility to change venues (Allianz had to host the first PF and ANZ Stadium the 2nd PF). It was only due to public outrage amongst the fans and media that the Cowboys/Broncos 2004 Week 2 Final gotmoved to Townsville, otherwise it would've been at Allianz.

Probably better 43k at sfs rocking

Than 45k at ANZ

I went to tigers v saints back then .. electric atmosphere.. amazing sound when Benji did that run around play

Realistically nrl fans deserve that kind of game weekly .. that's what's drives attendance

Incorrect. It's not a home prelim according to the venue allocation for finals matches that was introduced in 2011 when suburban grounds in Sydney were ruled ineligible to host finals,

http://www.nrl.com/NRLHQ/ReferenceCentre/FinalsSystemExplained/tabid/10635/Default.aspx

It's home region for week 3, meaning by technicality, only Broncos/Cowboys/Storm/Warriors are eligible for a preliminary final at their home venue. Meaning hypothetically that if Manly was the designated home team in a prelim final and they were playing South Sydney, the NRL has every right to play the game at ANZ Stadium. Likewise if Newcastle or Canberra were 'hosting' the Bulldogs (that's a whole different issue which has already been discussed on this forum as to why Newcastle/Canberra are not included in the eligible week 3 finals venues, despite having a larger capacity that some of those venues that are eligible).

Yeah i remember that. It lead to the ridiculous situation in 04 of roosters and bulldogs "hosting" prelims at the other team's home ground. Roosters/cowboys at ANZ and dogs/panthers at SFS. From memory the roosters asked for what would have been a logical swap of venue but it was denied.

Well technically that's correct but Roosters definitely feel more at home at sfs rather than anz is what I was getting at

its not disenfranchised anywhere other then Sydney
& the reasons lazy sydneysiders are disenfranchised are soft & questionable

use it or lose it
that needs to be the tough lesson
the self indulgent arrogance of sydneys NRL fans needs to be addressed
I have a right to have my club in the comp
I.. won't support them .. but its my right goddamitt!!!!
its ridiculous

losing a few thousand loyal followers of some Sydney clubs but bringing in new markets with lots more new motivated fans is a viable option
we can't not look at it for fear of alienating an unmotivated apathetic fan base
they'll have no one to blame but themselves

Whilst I understand where you're coming from, culling a club results in the loss of more than just a 'few thousand' fans...

Relocation should be supported more than revoking a licence

You've got a good memory, lol!

Yeah, it was a farcical situation and I do recall the Roosters request for the venue swap being rejected. Bulldogs/Penrith at ANZ would've got a much larger crowd, hence more than offsetting the difference of the Roosters/Cowboys game at Allianz (which probably would've got about 35k).

Glad we don't have that stupid situation anymore with inflexibility of venues or matches having to be played in a certain order, not just with the Allianz/ANZ Stadium arrangement, but also like it was during the McIntyre 8 system (the only change to the trend was in 2009 when Bulldogs/Eels and Storm/Broncos PFs had to be swapped because of the clash with the VFL Grand Final at Etihad, which was a year before the Storm started playing at AAMI Park). It was because of that match order inflexibility that the Cowboys/Warriors Week 2 final in 2007 had to be played in Townsville on a stinking hot Sunday arvo (when a simple swap with Eels/Bulldogs could've been done), fans complained and it was the first step in losing Week 2/3 Sunday arvo finals as a consequence (the other being the push for fans wanting their beloved BBQ on GF day)

shoveling Sydneys shit onto a new market may not work , if the alienated fans of the relocated club have no interest in following their club in another city , plus attending games when they come to Sydney to play away games
aka the Swans & Lions in Melbourne

then why even bother
why not a fresh start ...

I know this has been brought up many times before by Diesel and I 100% agree with him, but on the topic of week 2/3 Sunday arvo finals, it was changed from Sat night/Sunday to Fri night/Sat night in 2008 in exchange for the GF being moved from night (7:15pm) to twilight (5:15pm).

Now that Ch9 got their night GF back, I can't understand how they've got away with having week 2/3 finals still on Fri night/Sat night. It's only fair that it is moved back to Sat night/Sunday arvo. It's quite amazing no one in the media have been pressurising the NRL/ARLC on this matter. The ARLC has bent over way too much to Ch9 since the independent commission was formed and although it is extremely unlikely it would happen, I would love to see the change above being made.
