This thread has gone so far downhill that the Dragons, with a top 4 spot on the line, celebrating the career of Nightingale and the life of Lance Thompson, playing at Kogarah on a Sunday afternoon, against their arch rival Bulldogs, and got a crowd of 12,000.....

.....and there are zero posts about it...

i think people are sick of posting about disappointing crowds

I watched every single game on tv this weekend except the sharks v knights
I went to it.

It would’ve been easy to stay home for that as well.
He was asking why no one had posted about the crowd, thats just my opinion why, there was nothing worth posting about, people would rather post about a good crowd - and it looks like next week should have some good ones

GC sold out
Slater's last H/A game at AAMI and no AFL
NZ should get a good crowd
Sunday arv in Brisbane

Yeah I know
But people become a bit over it all when there are dead games at the end of the season.
Save a few bucks at home.

That’s what I was saying.
The TV seemed very enticing over the weekend
Shitty grey weather

....and a bunch about an AFL match...

At this point what is there to say? Shit crowds are just such a common occurance. Not to mention that if you mention how bad crowds are you immediately have people jumping in offering up all manner of silly excuses.

The AFL crowd is very relevant because it makes a mockery of all our excuses. Pretty much every excuse we use was present for the AFL game and yet they can attract a 35K crowd.

Facing an out of town team- check
Game was live on FTA and fox - check
Threat of rain - check
Game finished super late - check
Fans had to deal with getting around Sydney which is apparently impossible for NRL fans - check
Competing with both a bledisloe cup game and an NRL match - check
I'd have to double check but I'm pretty sure the average price for a swans match is just as high if not higher than an NRL match.

The list goes on and on.

Yeah but the NRL rates better on TV I hear you say. Wrong again. The AFL match outrated the NRL game in the same timeslot despite running an hour longer.

The swans continue to embarrass our code every single time they play and that's why their crowds get brought up.

But not really, because there are 11 Swans games in Sydney each year. Supply and demand means they're more likely to attract bums on seats because there's less opportunity to attend.

When fans in Sydney have up to 100 opportunities each season to catch an NRL match then chances are Sharks v Knights at SCGS isn't high on their priority list.

Can we add all the Sydney crowds together v the swans
That would make more sense

No it wouldn't. If we were comparing AFL popularity to NRL popularity maybe. No one is saying the AFL is actually bigger than the NRL in Sydney.

That doesn't explain why any random swans game can draw a bigger crowd than our biggest marquet matches like roosters v Souths.

How many NRL games this season have drawn more than 35K in Sydney? Let's not pretend it's only sharks vs knights getting smaller crowds.

The money is in TV, meh crowds.

The AFL game rated higher as well. Also why does it have to be one or the other? Why does having big crowds mean you're sacrificing TV ratings?

big hit!

2018 London Premier League clubs
Tottenham - Tottenham (North London) - 62k new stadium
Arsenal - Holloway (North London) - 60k
West Ham - Stratford (East London) - 60k
Chelsea - Fulham (West London) - 42k
Crystal Palace - Selhurst (South London) - 26k
Fulham - Fulham (West London) - 26k
Watford - Watford (North-west Greater London) - 21k

Yes, it's 7 vs 9 NRL clubs, but most of these stadiums are big by NRL standards and they manage to put the house full sign up every week with triple the prices of an NRL ticket.

NRL should be doing much better at attracting supporters to games rather than just relying on TV money and bending over with games on Thursday nights and Fridays at 6pm. The overwhelming majority of games in the Premier League, as well as the NFL, are day games. Promotion of NRL is shithouse too and then you have the FTA broadcaster criticise the game at every opportunity as well. Has it changed anything in terms of how the game is reffed and time it takes to get decisions? No, it's only succeeded in turning people off.

London also has double the population of Sydney.

There's no need to drag in random sports from around the world. The EPL and NFL or whatever other comp you want to talk about simply aren't comparable for a host of reasons.

The AFL makes far more sense to compare to.

if TV is all that matters and not crowds we may as well ditch stadiums and play in front of billboards, imagine the TV money?? 9 would love it!!

I get that TV is where the money is but it shouldn't be at the expense of match day experience.. A good crowd comes across well on TV and Fox and 9 would probably pay more for the better looking game.
