Possibly Smith wont play in this one due to having dizziness and headaches the following day after being hit by Archer, and with it being a short turn around.

Labuschagne will come in for him if that is the case

Last chance for both Warner and Bancroft for mine, though not fussed if they get dropped for this test (Khawaja and Harris to open). Thought Harris should have been given first crack at the role, but anyway

Pattinson comes in for Siddle. Starc misses out again?

We can retain the ashes right here

I'd keep Labuschange regardless of Smith playing or not.
Deserves a spot for his efforts.

Can we drop both Warner and Bancroft, they look tired and need to be 'rested'. Open with Khawaja and Harris. Khawaja has done a little better, not much but a little.

If smith is fit

Warner
Khawaja
Labuschagne
Smith
Head
Wade
Paine
Pattinson
Cummins
Lyon
Hazlewood

If smith is out then Harris @ 3 and Labuschagne drops down to 4

Warner’s form is a big concern but he won’t be dropped yet, his lack of runs probably saves Khawaja’s spot too.

ideally we could drop Tim Paine as well. I don’t see a single thing he’s bringing to the team anymore. Even his keeping isn’t that great.

SOS to Carey
If Smith somehow is fit then Marnus has to replace one of the top 3

I’d say Paine is safe for this series at least, unless he starts dropping sitters or gets injured

If the last test is a dead rubber would be ideal to groom someone in , but we don’t have any specialised keepers in the squad. Maybe draft in Carey if Paine is injured ? Carey kept well and batted with a lot of composure in the WC, then again so did Warner  . Test cricket is a different beast

Pattinson should be well rested now but who does he replace? Hazelwood? Get f**ked. Piddle ? Yes but Langer won't drop the steak avoider . Cummins? Get double f**ked.

If Smith is out than the two teams even out.

A+ Smith
A Stokes, Cummins, Lyon
A- Broad, Hazelwood
B+ Root, Warner
B Khawaja, Head, Woakes
B- Burns, Archer
C+ Siddle, Bairstow
C Buttler, Wade
C- Paine
D+ Bancroft
D Roy
D- Denly, Leach

Who captains? Smith can't until May.

I'd go left field and say Lyon. Smart cricketer, well liked, almost undroppable.

There's no way they're dropping Warner (yet) IMO. I agree with herbert - boot Bancroft, move up Uzi and bat Lasagna at 3, assuming Smithy is cleared. Patto in for Banana Man.

How is Warner a B+?

Failed both digs and dropped the ball more than Mikale Ravalawa.

Fwiw Ponting said he thought Cummins would be rested. Crazy, but that’s our sports medicine selectors.

The pitch at Headingley seems like it might be dependent on the time of year it’s played

2 of the last 3 tests England has won by an innings on raging seamers, but those matches were played in May & early June.

two years ago the West Indies won a high scoring match that was played in late August.

Labuschagne in for any of Warner, Bancroft and Wade.

He has a dig, leaves the ball outside off stump and is capable of a hard fought 40 or 50 unlike most of our batsman. In a low scoring series that's what we're going to need

Also showed that he has the stones to see off Archer who now looks to be the main threat.
