The confirmation that USA and Canada have been granted hosting rights for the 2025 World Cup went down well. However, we will not have to wait that long to see major international action over the pond. Despite the Kangaroos supposedly bringing down the curtain on the Four Nations, there is discussion over there being one more – in 2019… in the US!

This would act as a first test of the Moore Sports International’s capabilities in hosting a major tournament and prove a leg-up for the professional league they hope to launch that year. Expect the fourth team to be a top Pacific nation or the US Hawks. The US are also in the running to host the first Intercontinental Cup, which looks like being delayed until 2022 to avoid Rugby Union World Cups in 2019 and 2023. That would be a practice run for the 2025 World Cup.

So it's all over the shop and no one really knows what's going on.

Well, it's a totally new experience in RL but I'm trying to get my head around it..

It's a start, but it would absolutely have to involve the US. Why does it have to be the big 3 + 1 though? Why not let 2 of the big 3 have a series against each other and the odd one out play in a 4N with USA, Canada & an invitational country like France/Italy/Russia, countries that your typical American could at least relate to.

Also holding the IC Cup the year after a World Cup is ridiculous, what has the Union World Cup got to do with it? they wouldn't be in the same country & probably different times of the year, should be totally irrelevant to planning.

Pros:
-ambitious
-clear sign of a US commitment a long way from 2025

Cons:
-not really the event I'd choose - somewhat limited appeal without the draw of 'World Cup' branding.
-I no longer agree with fully hosted tournaments between WCs. Neutral games are a waste imo - every game should be someone's home game, with minor exceptions.
-If its a continuation of the existing 4N, only 1 of USA and Canada can play.

How I'd do it... make 2019 a 6 Nations year - it's a step up from 4N without going all the way to the full planned 8N.
England France
Australia NZ
USA Canada
In which USA and Canada host all their games, England and France host Australia and New Zealand, and Australia vs NZ is played at home.

It could be really good but if you put USA in then they could just get smashed, i'd think you'd need to make it 6 nations, 2 pools, USA in a pool with another tier 2 side, top 2 go through to semi's.. Thats my thought. I think it's a good idea to start promoting the sport in that way in the US as soon as possible and it also gives them something to aim at.

Is it nonsense though... it's exactly the kind of backwards thing RL loves doing

yeah its nonsense....danny brough is 33 NOW...he'll be retired by the time there could be a GB tour, ben flower would be behind 6-8 english props..

and as ive just said..putting the best england players in a different shirt will not make them play better

anyway lets not get bogged down in this crap again...

lets pick apart his other stuff

the IC cup will NOT be in 2022,

from dave colliers email to me the other week

With the venues for the 2021 and 2025 world cups being determined the Board also determined to put to tender an Intercontinental Cup in 2023
There were offers tabled for an Intercontinental Cup in 2022 rather than 2023 but the Board and nations decided that global events would be in 2021 and every two years thereafter .

would it kill RL journos to actually ask the relevant people actual questions? instead of making stuff up?

Well, the author hoped there would be compulsory selections for all home nations, if I read it correctly. Because some English born Welsh/Irish/Scotsmen would "bring the spirit and grit missing from Wayne Bennett’s England side last month."

Quality lolz

being able to concentrate and not give away stupid penalties is what was missing from england..not spirit & grit lol

plus scotland got pinged for penalites more than any team ever to play in the 4nations...probably lol

And once the other nations are competitive i probably still don't see the point because there will be more benefit in Aus or NZ playing those other nations regularly. I don't know why this is an attractive option to many people.
