Good draw, should be four good crowds (Knights, Panthers, Roosters, Cowboys with potential for a couple of other ones to crack 15k (Storm, Warriors) Only Tigers and Titans might drop below the 15k?

Tigers should still get a good-ish crowd you'd think. Depends if Manly fans do any travelling. They've only played Manly there twice and both were mid or late season games. R1 would probably bump it close to 15k.

Titans game last year - same opponent and timeslot - only got 10k so I wouldn't think that would be anything special.

I thought so too but it looks like the season start is actually governed by when the Grand Final sits - with the October long weekend switching back a week next season (first Mon in Oct being the 7th after it was the 1st this year), everything comes back one week.

The only difference in terms of the season structure I can see is that the rep weekend remains where it is, which means it will occur a week earlier than last year in order of rounds played. Last year it was after Round 15, this year I think it will now sit after Round 14.

Add to that. like last year, the season will only have 25 rounds as opposed to the historic 26 meaning the season kicks off when one would expect. The last time the GF was October 6 (2013), the season started March 7 but that included 26 rounds plus a rep weekend.

The Grand Final being on the 6th is an opportunity for clear air from other codes on the weekend and the chance for some build up in non League cities. Could result in higher rating in these cities and a chance to increase reach and engagement. If it works well that might be something that could be scheduled regularly going forward.

Understand the pub holiday dictates the NRL scheduling but there is a chance in the next few years possibly to create a bigger, stand alone event with a full week of clear air build up across the country. It has a potential impact that cannot be underestimated, especially if there is any desire to expand as part of the next TV deal.

AFL adding teams didn't tinker with it too much as teams still play 22 games, they just play less teams twice. The recent tinkering was adding bye week at the end of the season, before finals. But their timing is to still play last Saturday in September unless other forces dictate otherwise. If not mistaken this may mean the next 2-3 years of possible stand alone grand final weekends for the NRL to take advantage of

If the AFL end up having theirs on the same public holiday weekend the NRL one normally falls on, and the NRL decide to push theirs back a week, you're then pushing back into Bathurst which I would dare say are fairly similar demos you wouldn't want clashing either.

It is nice to turn the telly on Grand final morning and not having AFL recaps shoved down your throat.

If the AFL is meant to be the last Saturday in September then the same weekend situation should be far less than it has been the last few years.

The AFL can barely choose a start time season to season let alone a uniform date

I guess the question begs why do they need to be separated? I don't see them as taking away from the attention of the other - both events attract a full house and 3m+ viewers on TV, I'm not sure what growth on top can be achieved?

Whilst interest in NSW and QLD wouldn’t be too different, it is a fair assumption that the other states are partly distracted by the AFL grand final if on the same weekend. To have some separation avoids sharing the spotlight in those states and gives full coverage and attention. That surely has some economic and strategic value, especially to potential new audience participants.

I can’t speak for Newcastle but I have to drive about 25 kms.
That, on a Friday arvo can take 45 mins.
Sometimes longer.
Then a good 20 min walk.
I’m being very generous here too.
