From Sporting News,

Damien Cook crossing fingers for Roosters rivalry match to kickstart NRL's May 28th restart

Damien Cook says the Rabbitohs expect their fierce rivalry with the Sydney Roosters will be used to kickstart the NRL's restart on May 28th.

Meanwhile, the South Sydney dynamite firmly believes this year's premiership will prove to be one of the hardest to win, which is why Cook isn't buying into the belief it'll carry with it an asterisk.

All 16 clubs will officially return to training today after a six-week hiatus amid the coronavirus stand down, with players having been briefed earlier this week over the NRL's strict biosecurity guidelines.

With four weeks remaining until the season resumes, the competition's new 20-round format still remains without a confirmed fixture list, with the NRL set to announce the new draw in the next fortnight.

Cook expects it will be a very different type of preparation going into the first round back, but says his side are mentally preparing to face traditional rivals and premiers the Roosters come May 28th.

And he's called for the NRL to front-load the draw with as many rivalry matches as possible to muster as much interest in the game as possible.

"Normally each week you've got a week or so to prepare for each team, so it might feel a little bit weird not knowing," Cook told Big Sports Breakfast.

"I can take a pretty hot guess that they'll start the competition up with us and the Roosters. I know there was a bit of a rumour a few days or weeks ago, but I think that'd be a great idea.

"I think the more they can make some rivalry rounds to get the extra attention around the game and build it back up again the better."

With the shortened season, there have been some suggestions floated that this year's premiership will be tagged with an asterisk.

But Cook argues this year's season will be one of the hardest to win, highlighting this year's champions will be the side that shows the most resilience and adaptability.

"Everyone's going to have to adapt to different situations," the Souths speedster pointed out.

"Whatever team has been able to motivate themselves individually and get that training done that they need to come back in good shape to make the most of these next three weeks.

"The rest of the competition we're still gonna be playing 18 games, there's going to be no bye rounds so you're not gonna have that week where teams get off where they can reset their season and rest any injuries.

"It's going to be quite full-on and game day routines are going to go out the window. It's going to be a bit of a mental battle.

"With this many rounds, there shouldn't be an asterisk next to the premiership because it's going to be quite a hard one to win and one of the hardest competitions."

Where does everyone stand on this? I am firmly on the side of 'no jab, no play.' In my opinion, it's something that needs to be done by all and it's apparently in the NRL's protocols so they have to do it.

From Sporting News,

NSW health minister Brad Hazzard tells NRL to 'stick to the deal' over flu vaccine

New South Wales health minister Brad Hazzard told the NRL to "stick to the deal" as debate continues around the flu vaccination.

The Gold Coast Titans announced on Friday that Bryce Cartwright and Brian Kelly had been stood down after refusing to get a flu shot.

The NRL is planning to resume its season on May 28 amid the coronavirus pandemic, but authorities are pushing for players to get a flu vaccine.

Hazzard hit out at anti-vaccination attitudes and said the NRL needed to stick to the deal it had agreed with governments.

"I am extremely frustrated generally at anti-vaxxers and the message they send out. It's just plain stupid and dangerous," he told a news conference on Saturday.

"If we listen to their messages, we'd still have polio rife in our community. If they've got a short-term memory all they need to do is look to one of our pacific neighbours [Samoa], who had a massive breakout of measles and a very high death rate just literally a few months ago.

"I have no tolerance or time for those views, but I'd also say this, in regard to NRL, whilst I do want to see Manly win whatever competition starts up, my advice to the NRL would be you gave certain undertakings to the community and to the government about the basis for recommencement and you have to make sure through your contractural arrangements or other arrangements with the players that you stick to the deal. Simple as that."

Hazzard said that as far as he was aware, the NRL had agreed that players would get a flu vaccination before playing.

"My understanding is that that was certainly what was explained to the NRL," he said.

"And the NRL have to make sure that they, through their contractural arrangements with their players, deliver but that's a matter for the NRL."

I’m a bit sick of the anti vax talk are you bro?

If it was me and I had kids I couldn’t live with myself if I didn’t have them up to date on all their vaccinations.
