So with the new 2020 super league season less than a week away which players are fans excited about seeing gaining international honours? Or the rookies of last the 1-2 years breaking out and cementing a place in the matchday 17? Or the rookies we haven’t seen or heard about?

My picks would be :-

International honours
Jack walker
Dom Manfredi(if he can stay fit)
Tom Johnstone(again fitness is key)
Stevie ward
Jacob trueman

Breakout
Harry Newman
Jack welsby
Jake wardle
Morgan smithies
Matty ashton

Rookies
Harry Smith
Corey Johnson
Lewis Dodd
Dom young
Jack croft

Smithies had one of the best debut seasons I've ever seen in 2019, if he can make another step in 2020 he'll be playing for England IMO. Reports from preseason say that Harry Smith & Umyla Hanley have both looked very good for Wigan, so I'd like to see both getting some game time this season.

100% agree with you on smithies but incredibly 2nd season syndrome is real and alarmingly quite common.

As for Harry Smith he surely must be close to breaking into the 18 or 19 matchday squads if not the 1st 17??

Don’t know much about Hanley. Is he a fullback? Think we’ll only see him if injuries strike tbh.

Cant see any of our mob getting near an England shirt but excited to see if some of our young kids can get regular SL spots. Will Dagger has the pace if he can improve his defence and hoping Mikey Lewis gets more game time though at 18 he still has a couple of years to go yet. Owen Harrison is one to watch. With injuries to our starting second rowers I expect the England Youth international player to get more game time at start of season.

Mikey Lewis is a scrum half that was on loan to Newcastle thunder last season right?

Yes, he's got big raps on him from those who have seen him in the academy. I expect he will play mostly reserve grade this year but hopefully will get some action in first team at some point.

If it worked out so well for both players and clubs then he should stay at Newcastle for another season.

Smith is in the 21 for this week against Wire, would expect him to be in there a lot of the time depending on injuries in other positions.

Hanley is probably our 3rd choice Full Back at present, behind French & Hardaker. Escare is basically done at Wigan, just trying to find someone to take him off our hands.

Hanley has certainly got time on his side being only 17-18 years old. Sad really about both escare and naverette never really kicking on.

Not sure you can class Welsby as a breakout player when he played eleven times last year and in that short time, outperformed more established players such as Jamie Shaul.

Wigan 16 v Warrington 10. Decent game to open the season, The SL PTB clampdown was a fecking joke, not surprisingly.

Good game.
Wigan can probably consider themselves fortunate. Despite a man advantage, they were in a lot of ways outplayed. Chris Hill was red carded early for a poor high shot but Warrington dug deep and kept right in the game. Wigan played well enough as a unit but even with some lucky refereeing were unable to pull away. Star players need to stand up and be counted earlier. Bevan French the difference in the end.

3 Bevan French - lethal in the 20m zone. 1 try and contributed heavily to another. That said, needs more involvement in the mid-field
2 Ben Murdoch Masila - immense first half. Trampled George Burgess for the opening try. Less effective when the tide of possession turned but can't be blamed for Hill and Cooper getting carded.
1 Joe Philbin - really effective with the ball. Footwork and post contact metres.

Unimpressed by Hastings and Wigans backs. Didn't really use the numbers advantage until very late in the game. Not much creativity out of Hastings or penetration from the outside backs. Hardaker eventually had some good moments when it was 13 on 11. Not a fan of him in the centres really. Joe Burgess did will to eat up some of Austin's sloppy kicks and make some serious metres.

Some good performances out of Warrington who did well with a man down, two down at one point.
Daryl Clark, Stefan Ratchford, Matty Ashton all had good involvements and kept their team in the game with a man down.
Cooper held the middle well in Hill's absence until his yellow.
Blake Austin had his moments but with the game on the line couldn't hit the right kick. Mixed game.
Chris Hill had one to forget, with a lazy attempt letting French in for a try and then overcompensating with a nasty high tackle on another would-be try.

England's internationals Hardaker, George Burgess, Blake Austin could all be aiming higher. Philbin had a great game though. Ratchford was pretty good and will no doubt be kept in the frame.
Burgess after getting embarrassed went off and didn't come back? Injured or hooked?

Murdoch-Masila started on fire and could be up for a huge year. BMM flattening Burgess was another win for Tonga over GB.

Cook Islands will be happy to have Gelling back in first grade. Looked a handful with his touches.

Ireland eligible Ben Currie made a decent account of himself but Ireland will be really hoping England ignore Philbin.
