He offers nothing from the bench though. Has done nothing all year. Last year his form was decent.

This year he's not worthy of an NRL spot. Mitch Kenny deserves it ahead of him. 13 games to May for 1 try assist and 1 linebreak assist. You can throw anyone into any position and they can stink it up just as May does. His utility value exists because he is used in positions. Not because he performs in them. Maybe last year he felt he owed us or something.

Yeah, of course I watched. My favourite part was when they showed the ladder after the game.

The game itself was pretty ordinary. Our attack was bulldogs on a bad day level and apart from Fish the forwards were owned by the Tigers pack.

How was little athletics? You are back on the forum early, so I can only assume you didn't make the finals.

Where was Origin played last year thanks to Covid? I forget, Oh, that’s right, at the end of the season... (Where it should be played every footy season) This is the first time in any game that Penrith have had over half it’s first grade playing roster out on Origin commitments since, I dunno, maybe 2003?

2003 was a bloody long time ago.

I think we deserve a little latitude in that respect...

In 2003 we only had 1 origin player for 1 game and that was Scott Sattler. That really helped in our minor premiership and Grand Final win that year because we had no distraction from bloody origin. That, on top of having hardly any injuries all season, really helped an unfancied Panthers team win that comp.

In 2004 we had a few make it and lost a game or two around origin time but in reality it's only this year that we've ever had so many players out due to origin.

Fortunately, that's the only game where we have to miss all the origin players. However, who knows how they'll back up or how many will back up after the origin games. Judging by last night's performance, we can't really afford to rest too many of them, if we want to keep dominating at the top of the ladder.

They are a very good side and they're not likely to turn in a performance like that again.

But what hope do they have if they drop a few key personnel and have to line up against the Storm?

Realistically not much hope if it's in the finals or GF. We will need to have our best players available.

The reality is that almost every year the team that wins the comp has a very fit and in form set of players when it matters most.

Yes, checked it out and Manly were largely unaffected by Origin in 1995.

They had Terry Hill, Craig Hancock, Mark Carroll, Steve Menzies, John Hopoate and Geoff Toovey representing NSW and Danny Moore for Queensland.

Only Hill (1 game) and Hancock (2) missed Sea Eagles games during the Origin period between 15 May-12 June and Manly defeated Canberra (16-8), Brisbane (23-4) and North Sydney (36-6).

They went on to win their opening 15 rounds before losing 16-21 to the Roosters at Brookvale on 16 July.

Folks who expect guys rated 18 to 25 on their roster to be game winners are fools. If they were decent, they'd be in the 17 to begin with.

It ain't Europe where a team like Manchester City can field 12th to 22nd players each week and still win the league. In a salary capped league like the NRL, your 11-20 drops off, and then 21-30 is off the cliff.

Those who use Roosters as an example, they have an 18yo once in a generation halfback they were paying peanuts. Take him out and they don't win some of those early games.

This is one thing both the storm and roosters have done well over the last 10 years, winning their fair share of games when depleted by origin.

It's a long time since either have been this depleted by Origin, facing an opponent at full strength. In 2018 the Storm had 6 out, and put the cleaners through a Dragons side that had 5 out. Luckily for us that game is the worst of it. You have to think at least one of the halves will back up next game as well as Koroisau and Martin and hopefully others. Also Leota will be back, for what he's worth.

Panthers could possibly get on a bit of a roll with the depleted side if they were to get lots of time together to work on combinations, rhythm etc. One week and its half aside changed all at once


But it still was an average line up. Rob Jennings and Matt Eisenhuth both unwanted by Tigers, Jaemon Salmon unwanted by Eels. Tyrone May is not a half, Smith and Tago both on debut. Players all good enough to slot in to a nearly full strength side and do a job. But there was just so much missing and not a single player capable of stepping up to fill in the gap a bit.

Kikau probably the biggest disappointment. He really doesn't aim up often. JFH does everything he can and leaves nothing in the tank. Kikau just seems happy to cruise along. Very Latrell Mitchell in the centres like.

When was the last time any half made 44 tackles? Either this was the game plan, or the forwards were so badly outplayed the half had to take up the slack.

Not from one week to the next! Taking 8 players out then having just 2 training sessions together, it is a credit to them that they were as competitive as they were!
