2021 Season Review

Predicted Finish: 1st-4th

Overall Finish: Runners up

The Rundown

Well, what words can you use to describe 2021, the Season that was? Crazy, spectacular, scintillating, surprising, the list just goes on and on. Been a crazy year for our mighty South Sydney Rabbitohs. A Season that will forever be etched in history and a Season that will forever stick in my mind as one of the greatest Seasons I have ever experienced as a Souths fan. It’s certainly a close second behind 2014.

During the Pre-Season, many said that anything short of a Premiership this year would be a failure. I must admit, I was one of those people. We had it all, we truly had it all in 2021. The greatest coach of all time leading perhaps one of the greatest South Sydney sides of all time. Because of this, many had us as Premiership favourites and rightly so. This was the year we put all our eggs in the one basket and went all out for the comp.

I feel that what followed over the next eight months certainly lived up to those expectations. Honestly, I can’t remember the last time I enjoyed watching a Footy side over the course of the year so much. 2014 was probably the last time. We were just such an enjoyable team to watch this year when we got it right, and thankfully that was more often than not. The style and the spirit we played with was simply incredible. In fact, I’d even go as far to say that 2021 was my second most enjoyable Season of all time. Second only to 2014 of course. Had we won the Grand Final, there’s no doubt in my mind 2021 would have been the best.

This is all shown by the fact that it was the most winning Season in the history of the club as no Souths team has ever won 20 games in a Regular Season. That speaks volumes.

It wasn’t all smooth sailing that’s for sure, there was plenty of hiccups along the way. Most notably was obviously getting 50 points put on us in Rounds 9 and 11. That was a real low point and a lot of people wrote us off after that. However, another reason why this Season was so great, was the way we rose above those losses, learnt from them and overcame them. The South Sydney spirit really shone through and kept shining after that. You could see a shift in the mindset of the team since those two games and they certainly turned out to be a blessing in disguise. Who knows what would have happened had we not had those two wake up calls? From there, we were basically one of the top teams, right there in the hunt for the Premiership right until the very end.

Yes, we didn’t win the comp in the end. Yes, it hurts so friggin much to lose the Grand Final (I’ve only just got over it), but when you look at the 2021 Season as a whole, I don’t know how you can be anything but proud. It truly has been one of the best Seasons in the history of our club.

Player by Player

Jai Arrow: His first year here and boy didn’t he fit in well? Feels like he’s been here his whole career. Earnt my instant respect with the way he handled himself against the arch-rivals in Round 3 as that will always go down as one of the great South Sydney forward performances in my eyes. From there, he continued to have a pretty good year. Filled any role that was required of him whether that was off the bench, starting prop, lock, or second rower. It didn’t matter, Jai handled it with ease. He was probably most effective off the bench though as he constantly made a good impact and proved to be super valuable to our rotation as we saw in the Grand Final. It probably wasn’t the explosive year we were all hoping for from Jai, but he was still very, very good and I look forward to him expanding on that role next year.

Tom Burgess: Career best year for him no doubt. Pretty sure I said the same thing about him last year but 12 months later, it’s true once again because he just continues to get better and better. This Season has been the best of Tom’s career and he is currently in the form of his life. It’s the fittest he’s ever been, and it certainly showed. He monstered opposition forward packs with that classic Burgess bash game that we know, and love and he led from the front all year. Was particularly impressive off the bench. 26 games throughout 2021 with 619 tackles for the year and 144 meters per game. Those are really good numbers. Not only that but he has cut his errors way down which helps massively. Tom has certainly emerged from his brothers’ shadow.

Braidon Burns: Not a massive amount to report on but he proved to be a very valuable fill in player for us. Fantastic depth. Slotted in when required in 8 games and did a pretty good job in all of them. His best performance was probably Round 22 against the Titans where he bagged 2 tries and was pretty influential. A bit sad to see him depart us to be honest and I wish him all the best at the Dogs.

Jed Cartwright: A bit of a disappointing year for Jed. I know Covid didn’t help (I don’t think he was in the bubble), but he was barely spotted all year. Played one game in Round 9 against the Storm and wasn’t great from memory. We really need him to be better in 2022.

Damien Cook: I feel like 2021 was one of the better years of Cookie’s career. In the past, he has copped a bit of criticism for not running enough yet still trying to do too much and over-playing his hand. However, it seemed like this year, he finally got the balance right. While I’d still like him to run more like 2018, he finally seemed to realise the players he has around him and simplified his role. Instead of trying to do it all himself, it was like he just focussed on his service and focussed of allowing those other stars to shine. This paid massive dividends for the team. His service was exceptional this year. Of course, Cookie still had moments of individual brilliance, but it’s been good to see him not over-play his hand as much. Finally stepped up and did everything he possibly could in the big games too. 24 appearances for 2 tries, 10 try assists, 1049 tackles (which is amazing) with an efficiency of 95.8%. Great numbers.

Dane Gagai: In what has proven to be his final year at the club, Gags was magnificent. Truly great, I can’t remember him having a bad game. I can remember him having some near man of the match games though! You could see his burning desire to win a comp all year and he put absolutely everything he possibly could into every game this year. It was 110% effort all the time from him in 2021. Constantly taking the tough carries all year but was able to constantly destroy defensive structures with his attacking flare too. He was a big, big reason why that left edge attack was so lethal. Gags was incredible without the ball this time too in an area he really worked on this year, it’s clear to see as not a lot got past him. So, a career best year for Gags too and a real shame it was his last with us. We’re going to miss him a lot.

Campbell Graham: Speaking of centres who have had career best years, you’d have to say the same for Gagai’s centre partner in Campbell Graham. What a year the young bloke has had. He was a standout in the outside backs all year with his running game. Proving super dangerous in attack but also a keen worker in the tough carries and he had an average of 11 running meters in his 21 appearances. Has really improved his passing game to set up his winger better too. The biggest thing I want to talk about with Campbell though is his defence. He really came of age without the ball this year to the point where I now believe he is one of the best defensive centres in the NRL. Yes, there’s the odd time he’ll be beaten but more often than not, he gets his man. I couldn’t believe some of the stops he came up with throughout the year, a big reason why our defence improved out of sight I reckon. Graham is only going to get better too so I can’t wait to see where his future goes!

Dean Hawkins: Made his debut this year in Round 6 which has pretty cool and played Round 9. While those performances were nothing to rave about, I thought he was solid in both and could have a future ahead of him.

Jacob Host: Gotta say he’s a quality player, exceeded my expectations of him this year for sure. Was in and out of the side early in the Season but cemented a spot in the 17 mid-Season and never looked back. One of those players you could rely on, would always do his job which I loved. Really looking forward to seeing what he can do in his second year with us.

Lachlan Ilias: Such a joy to see him make his debut in Round 25 and the kid played exceptionally well. Really impressed me and I’m sure a lot of you feel the same. Is in the running to replace Reyno so 2022 could be a huge year for him.

Alex Johnston: What a crazy year AJ has had!!! An absolute try scoring freak and he once again proved that in 2021. Scoring all sorts of tries through speed, skill, strength and finishing ability on his was to breaking the record for most tries in a Season by a Souths player and picking up his second consecutive Ken Irvine medal. It really is amazing. Scary to think how many tries he would have had this year if he wasn’t out for that four weeks or so with injury. On another note, I think his running game improved a bit this year as he wasn’t dragged back as much and was gaining an average of 121 run meters a week. I feel like his defence came a long way this year too. Great Season AJ!

Liam Knight: Really frustrating year for Knighty as he hasn’t performed at all. I know he’s had those concussion issues, but we need a lot more from him.

Keaon Koloamatangi: What an absolute beast!! He was good last year but 2021 has been a serious breakout year for him. He’s honestly gone from being a good young second rower with big potential to being well on his way to being one of the best forwards in the comp. I don’t say that lightly either, getting selected in the NSW squad this year proves it. I feel that Keaon was one of our best and most consistent all year, another player who basically never had a bad game, was constantly one of our best forwards at least. His leg drive after contact honestly just blows me away. It was like every run he had was going to be the last of his career, so he gave it absolutely everything he had. More often than not he’d make massive post contact meters and carry on with multiple defenders hanging off him. He is so strong. Really excited to see how he goes in 2022 with even more experience!

Patrick Mago: Pati was a very handy forward to have waiting in the wings this year as he stepped up and did the job required when needed. He is very similar to Keaon in that he has great leg drive and he’s hard to put down. In his seven appearances off the bench this year, we saw him make an average of 122 meters per game which is a number not to be scoffed at. His fitness was still a bit of an issue however, I feel that it was better than last year. Sad to see him go. Handy forward. All the best over in the UK Pati!

Peter Mamouzelos: Another young guy who came through and made his debut in 2021 and boy wasn’t he impressive? Played three games and didn’t look out of place in any of them. Quick off the mark, outstanding defence and has great service, I’ve already seen enough in the three games he played this year to know he has a big future. Hopefully he can play a bigger role in 2022.

Josh Mansour: A bit of a rocks and diamonds Season for Sauce really. He looked awesome in some games earlier in the Season and was proving to be a decent signing but it’s like his Season hit a snag when he copped that injury in Round 6, and he wasn’t able to find that really good form again. Granted, he did force his way back in and played some really good games covering for AJ late in the Season before another poor showing against Penrith ended his year. I’m expecting more from him next year. We need for from him next year.

Benji Marshall: What a signing. Seriously, what a masterstroke to bring him here for the final year of his career. He went so well, he proved to be one of the signings of the Season. Loved the way a guy with his experience just sat back, played the support role and slotted in when he needed to, it was truly great. He was awesome off the bench in some games as he was able to have an impact and turn the tide of a match a bit and he did a pretty damn good job when he needed to fill in at 5/8. He still had some Marshall magic in those old legs that’s for sure and it was particularly on show in Round 7, that was a Marshall masterclass! You could see how big of an impact he had around the club off the field too, especially with the young guys. I’ll be forever grateful that his final year was with us, just gutted we couldn’t send him out a winner.

Steven Marsters: A big disappointment. I mean no disrespect but it’s not even worth talking about the one game he played. I’m not disappointed to see him go.

Taane Milne: Taane was one of the real surprise packets of 2021. When we signed him, I thought it’d be strictly as a depth signing and I must admit, I wasn’t too thrilled when he found himself on the wing in Round 10. However, over the course of the next 8 weeks or so, he certainly made me eat my words because I though he was great! Super impressive in fact. Was always strong with his carries, made plenty of meters and proved he has a good finishing ability. The big work on area for him is his defence though as he did make some poor reads at times. However, I think he’s certainly in the running for a spot in the 17 next year.

Latrell Mitchell: Removing all the suspension stuff, he had an incredible year. An amazing year really and when you actually look at it, he was one of the form players of the competition. So exciting to watch every week as he just constantly tore the opposition apart with his power and skill. Seriously, I was just in awe of some of the stuff he did out there every week. His running game is destructive, we know that, but his passing game and combination with Cody simply went to a whole new level in 2021, it was insane when it got going. Latrell was a massive reason why our attack was so potent this year and just his presence on the field clearly lifted the rest of the boys. 13 trys, 14 assists, 18 line breaks and 2405 running meters in just 17 games! Pretty crazy. It’s such a shame he copped those two suspensions because I really feel he could have made a run at the Dally M alongside Cody. It also sucks because I also feel we win that Grand Final with him there. Oh well, at least there’s no doubting he’s a fullback now!! Trell has a lot to make up for next year and I can’t wait to see how he goes!

Davvy Moale: Made his debut in Round 20 and certainly impressed. Has that raw aggression and power. He certainly didn’t look out of place and I’m sure he’s going to play a bigger role in 2022 which is super exciting!!

Tautau Moga: Another guy who I can’t really say too much about as he only played one game. He wasn’t bad in that game but can’t really get a read on him.

Cameron Murray: Where do I even begin to describe the year that Cam has had? We all know the kind of player he is; we all know he’s a freak but man, this year just went to a whole new level! His class just shone through right from Round 1 as he always put in 100% and made sure he had nothing left in the tank. Cam’s always, and I mean always, there to take a big run for a fast play-the-ball when the team needs it. He’s always there to make a big tackle. He’s always there to add the ball playing element in the middle, seriously this guy was just ridiculously good this year. I’m finding it hard to put into words, so I’ll just let the stats do the talking, 20 games for 5 tries, 41 tackle breaks, 745 post contact meters, 24 offloads, 732 tackles (at 96.8%) and 2440 run meters. Now that’s impressive! Certainly, one of our best this year.

Mark Nicholls: If you’d have told at the end of last year that Nicho would become a starting prop in our side in 2021 and not only that, but become a key member of the side and captain the side, I would have said you’re crazy!! However, it’s an absolute testament to the goat and how well he’s gone this year. No doubt it was the best year of his career by far. In past years, I’ve said that Nicho just goes about his business and won’t let anyone down. Well, that’s not the case anymore. This year he turned into one of our best, most consistent forwards. I believe he was the only player to play every game in 2021 too. Well done Nicho!!

Jaxson Paulo: Still hasn’t sold on him late into this Season but he really has come on leaps and bounds, especially in the Finals. Seems to have matured a bit, makes fewer rash decisions on the field and has certainly become more of a threat to defending teams. His hit ups are as powerful as ever and his defence is on the improve. Basically, I feel that he’s finally on his way to becoming a consistent first grader and I can’t wait to see what he produces next year be it at centre or wing.

Adam Reynolds: It’s been an emotional Season for Reyno. I myself would find it hard to keep focussed on the task at hand but to his credit, he’s done that with ease. Never did it effect his Footy, not one little bit and that is hugely admirable. Not only to not let it effect your Footy but to still come out and put in a Season like that, it is truly amazing. I’d almost go as far to say that this was Reyno’s best year. His kicking game and goal kicking was just as good as always but his ball playing and play making this year was out of this world! The best I’ve ever seen him do it. He never used to dig into the line like he was this year and that brought us so many tries. Still gutted he’s gone, and it still doesn’t feel right, but it is what it is. Thanks for a great Season.

Hame Sele: A bit of a frustrating Season for Hame I’m sure because it was injury interrupted and he could never get a good run at the side. This saw him only make 7 appearances which is a real shame because in those 7games he was great! Hopefully next year goes better for him.

Jaydn Su’A: A real mixed bag for Su’A too as his form really varied. Started the year super well, I remember him being one of our better players early on. However, it was like he almost got a bit too comfortable and as a result, his form turned to shit. The middle period of the year is honestly the worst I’ve ever seen him play as it was like he barely wanted to be involved. But got to give credit where credit’s due, he put his head down, worked hard, made it back to the 17 and actually ended up playing some pretty good Footy by the end of the year. A bit sad to see him go as he’s a great player on his day.

Blake Taaffe: What a story man!! One of my favourite stories of the year. He makes his debut in Round 15, played a couple more games and never would have dreamt what was to come. Suddenly, he’s playing fullback in a Grand Final!! That’s crazy when you think about it. Boy didn’t he handle it well?! For a young kid who dreams of being an NRL player, that must be the most daunting thing ever! But he took it all in his stride and kind of handled it with ease. He was super confident the whole way through and came up with some massive plays as a result. It obviously would have been great to have Latrell there, but Taaffe did a bloody good job. Can’t wait to watch this guy progress.

Junior Tatola: Speaking of doing a bloody good job, didn’t Junior do a great job this year?! I wouldn’t say he was super outstanding, but he was super consistent. Never had a bad game and always went about his business with aggression and energy. Probably the best year of his career too, I think. Is starting to become a real forward leader within our pack too. 929 post-contact meters, 516 tackles (96.4%) with an average of 112 meters per game. Those are very solid numbers for the Season.

Cody Walker: And last but certainly not least, the great Cody Walker. Our best player of the year by far. One of the best players in the comp in fact, certainly the best 5/8 for 2021. Like Cam, I’m kind of speechless to describe his year. There really are just no words to describe it. One of the greatest individual Seasons I think I’ve ever seen. Seriously, it was that good. Still have no idea how he did some of the stuff he did this year but jeez it was brilliant to watch every week! The most instinctive attacking player I’ve ever seen, and he can literally almost always make something happen as was the case this year. Broke all kinds of records for try assists and line break assists in 2021, it’s just absolutely crazy. 16 tries, 33 try assists, 46 line break assists; It’s just off the charts!! I’ve never seen a Season like it. He’ll be kicking himself about the intercept in the Grand Final, but we wouldn’t even be in that game if it wasn’t for him. Thank you Cody for blessing us with you 2021 Season. Hopefully there’s plenty more to come just like that!

Conclusion

And there we have it, my 2021 Season review!! That took a long time, so I hope you enjoy.

So, yea, one incredible Season that turned out pretty remarkable! Ended with the tough Grand Final loss but that just goes to show how bloody hard it is to win a Premiership! I am so proud of all our players and staff, so proud. Despite not lifting the trophy, we’ve still been blessed as fans with one of the most amazing Seasons you’ll ever see. Hopefully we can go well next year!

So that’s me officially signing off on the 2021 Season, I guess. Time to switch focus and look towards 2022. Good timing with Pre-Season beginning in a couple weeks and the 2022 Draw out last week.

Next year is a whole new era and I can’t wait!!!

Glory, Glory!!
