From Fox Sports,

THE South Sydney Rabbitohs have got a delicate $6 million balancing act going on as the club attempts to lock down the key playmaking quartet of Latrell Mitchell, Cody Walker, Damien Cook and Lachlan Ilias long-term.

Mitchell’s form over the last month has been completely off the charts and given the South Sydney fullback and his great mate Walker are considered a package deal the Bunnies are going to need to sharpen their negotiating pencil.

The way Latrell has sparked South Sydney going on a four-game winning streak for the first time this season has once-again underlined how the gun fullback is in the same league as Tommy Trbojevic, Cameron Munster, Nathan Cleary, Jason Taumalolo and James Tedesco as a $1 million-a-season plus player.

This is where it gets interesting.

As much as South Sydney want to try and get the key playmakers signed prior to November 1 don’t be surprised if the star duo of Mitchell and Walker are in no rush.

They can take their time and let their football do the talking as the Rabbitohs try to kick into September.

It’s hard to imagine South Sydney without Mitchell and Walker and it’s hard to see the duo wanting to leave the Redfern club.

But it’s going to be a delicate balancing act for Souths CEO Blake Solly as the Rabbitohs steady themselves to make a run into the finals.

Hooker Cook is also seeking a three-year extension for 2024 and beyond but in reality it will probably end up being a two-year deal with an option for a third season.

The Bunnies also want to go down a similar path to the one they’ve gone with club champions Sam Burgess and John Sutton and ensure Cook remains around the Redfern club in a professional capacity beyond his NRL career.

Cook, 31, has a sports science degree and South Sydney value him as a key member of the red and green club.

Rookie halfback Ilias is also in talks about a contract extension beyond 2024 and given the way he’s developed over the course of his opening season in the NRL South Sydney are busy trying to retain the young gun no.7.

The Bunnies playmakers are all signed until the end of 2023 and the club has made it clear all four will be at Redfern next season.

I think this is big bullshit sensationalism tbh, latrells on 800 odd so we need 200 more for him,
We saved 700 from AR,
Cody is on around 700, at his age, i think after his performances this year he stays on 700, which i think is fair.
Cookies at 31 ison a reported 850, he cant expect to stay on that, id say between 6 to 700 is very fair, even less, replacements need to be kept and paid, mamouzelos wont hang around for cookie on 150k a year etc
Ilias in his first year i think 300 until he aclimatizes is fair,

I agree with this.
My understanding is Cody is on 650 (I specifically remember when he did that deal) and Cookie has been listed as 800 on that top 100 list by the Telecrap

No use worrying about what other teams are doing the bottom line is we have to win our games to get a better chance in the finals I don’t care who wins or loses other games because we are in control of our own destiny.

Ive got a funny feeling latrells not right, he must be having problems with his hamstrings, not running much not leaping up to catch balls, something is wrong, then playing him at centre, ive got a feeling FB will be out of reach for him, other FBs are running 200m latrell just hasnt got the stamina, we may yet see a permanent roll in the centres, and i hope we get tezi nui

'Laughable' - Five glaring incidents that highlight NRL's staggering foul play inconsistencies: https://www.foxsports.com.au/nrl/nr...s/news-story/47c23a320da8414ee247d5d363e2b828

This is a great read. Sums it up perfectly!

NRL issues fiery ban notice to all clubs after smokey debacle

Pre-game fireworks are no more, with the NRL issuing a strong warning to clubs over their use.

Fireworks have long been used alongside teams running onto venues to start games, however, the NRL have reportedly banned their use after a number of instances of games being held up from starting in recent weeks.

While many games have been delayed, or started in smokey conditions, it was a game in Penrith between the Sharks and Panthers last weekend which brought the issue to a head and forced action, with Sharks' fullback Will Kennedy unable to see the ball.

In rather comical circumstances, the wind blew the smoke from the fireworks straight down the middle of the ground to the area where Penrith would kick-off into.

Ashley Klein - who refereed the contest - originally delayed the start, but once the smoke had cleared the 40-metre line, allowed the game to commence.

The smoke hadn't cleared the rest of the field however, and the Sharks were lucky to get away without an error to commence the contest.

According to The Daily Telegraph, a memo sent to clubs suggests pre-game fireworks need the approval of the NRL.

“On a number of occasions over recent weeks fireworks have been used as teams take the field resulting in a plume of smoke hanging over the field of play as the game commences,” The NRL wrote.

“This obviously has the potential to affect the vision of players from both competing teams and could negatively impact play.”

“Under no circumstances are fireworks to be placed on the field of play at any time before the game without the prior approval of (Annesley). Also, for safety reasons no fireworks are to be placed anywhere near the Players tunnel as the Players enter the field”.

It's understood no fireworks will be used within five minutes of kick-off moving forward.

Transfer Whispers: https://www.foxsports.com.au/nrl/nr...s/news-story/3f007e78ecc081bfaf6f8a8e9a106b48

I'm not a big fan of signing Taupau to be honest. I mean, I'd take it if it happens but it won't really get me excited. I think he's past it and is more ineffective than he once was. His game has gone backwards. That's not to say he doesn't have anything to offer but his best days are gone, I think Nicho is better and I'd rather be playing guys like Moale and Suluka-Fifita ahead of him next year.

RLPA chief takes stern stance on moving August transfer deadline

Rugby League Players Association chief executive Clint Newton has taken a firm stance against any changes to the NRL August 1 transfer deadline without discussion.

The issue arises after Australian Rugby League Commission chairman Peter V’landys told News Corp last Monday that he was preparing to recommend the date be moved back to June 30. A sentiment Newton is only open to after player consultation.

Speaking to News Corp, he said “Ultimately the point is this is an employment matter and it is not a decision for the commission alone.

"It has been positioned as this doomsday, deadline of chaos. Let’s stop and take a look at the big picture here — we are talking about a couple of players who have temporarily swapped clubs, one of which hasn’t played first grade for months”

The players he refers to are Tigers duo David Nofoaluma and Oliver Glidart, who left the struggling inner west club to join top eight sides just before the window closed. Late moves like these have drawn claims of clubs “buying premierships”, which Newton disagrees with.

“I think it is a big call to accuse clubs of buying premierships when we are really talking about a couple of players here who are going to benefit from a loan system that was done with good intentions and works," Newtown said.

The deadline was moved initially as a Covid measure, but many now agree with V’landys that it is time to change back. Newton is open to the change but insists on player negotiation.

“Whenever there is discussion about employment matters or rights that are as fundamental as this one, which is free agency, you can’t talk about it as if it is not going to be negotiated," he added.

“You can’t just make a change like that. We definitely need to review the timing of it ... but let’s not conflate the two.

“One is the timing factor that absolutely needs to be discussed. The other is an employment right that would ultimately result in a restraint of trade.”
