Kosi upgraded on new deal

Rookie Vodafone Warriors winger Edward Kosi has been upgraded to a full NRL contract to the end of the 2023 season.
The 22-year-old Mangere East Hawks junior was on a development contract when he made his first-grade debut in the Vodafone Warriors’ eighth-round win over North Queensland on May 2.

Finishing his first NRL season with five appearances, he also played nine matches for feeder club Redcliffe in Queensland’s Intrust Super Cup.
“Ed’s come a long way in a short time especially allowing for playing no footy in 2020 and also an interrupted 2021 through Covid,” said Vodafone Warriors recruitment manager Peter O’Sullivan.
“He has come through the ranks from our 20s, reserve grade and Redcliffe to debut this year. His play twos in Intrust Super Cup were outstanding and every aspect of his game is on the up.
“Ed has earned his contract and with more experience in the next two years he’ll push to be a permanent member of the starting 13.”

Kosi’s debut against the Cowboys came in dramatic circumstances when he was called into the side to replace an injured David Fusitu’a with only an hour’s notice.
“The way Ed handled himself that day was really impressive,” said Vodafone Warriors head coach Nathan Brown.
“He had no time to prepare but he got heavily involved from the outset and has gone on to make real strides this year. We seem him having a big future.”
Kosi was one of six NRL rookies introduced by the Vodafone Warriors this year. Like him, Rocco Berry, Taniela Otukolo and Viliami Vailea also came through the club’s system. The quartet along with fellow debutants Reece Walsh and Jackson Frei all stepped up to the NRL after playing for Redcliffe.
In his five NRL outings this year Kosi averaged 110 metres, made nine tackles breaks and scored his first try in the win over Canterbury Bankstown.
For the Dolphins he averaged 125 metres a game, made 19 tackles breaks and scored four tries.

2021 is virtually over for the Warriors and what a year it has been, Covid has meant the team has spent the entire year in Australia, first Tamworth, then the Central Coast and finally the Gold Coast, we were going to have a game at Mt Smart, but Covid ended that, bugger it, I had tickets. 2022 looks likely to be just as unsettled, with Covid outbreaks again, the team could be based at Redcliffe for the new year, even the pre-season. Hopefully the team will be better for all the close losses this season, the prospect of Shaun Johnson back at the club means a few drop goals may be landed Below is the squad as it stands at the moment:

Vodafone Warriors assistant coach Craig Hodges has been appointed the club’s general manager football.

Vodafone Warriors CEO Cameron George said plans were in place to introduce the role in 2023 but these have been brought forward following the departure of recruitment manager Peter O’Sullivan.

With Hodges moving out of his existing role, Vodafone Warriors great Stacey Jones will head back to Australia to take on the assistant coach’s job he had filled before he returned home after the 2020 NRL campaign.

Marata Niukore signed for 2023 until end of 2026:

Niukore's long-term deal from '23

Parramatta back rower Marata Niukore is heading back to the Vodafone Warriors on a four-year contract starting in 2023.
The 25-year-old Mangere East Hawks junior has amassed 77 NRL appearances since joining Parramatta in 2017 before making his debut in 2018.
The 188cm, 106kg Mangere East Hawks junior came through the Vodafone Warriors’ system playing for the club’s under-20 and New South Wales Cup sides before moving to Australia.

“We’re absolutely thrilled to sign Marata on a long-term deal,” said Vodafone Warriors CEO Cameron George.
“We had him marked down as one of our key recruitment targets once we were able to go to the market for players off contract after the 2022 season.
“His home is Auckland, he knows our club really well and he’s now a well-established first grader who’s going to be a key player for us. He’s a really big part of our long-term future through to 2026.”
Niukore made 21 appearances for the sixth-placed Eels in 2021 with game averages of more than 60 minutes, 100 metres, 41 post contact metres and 22 tackles.
“Marata has developed into a high quality second rower who’ll bring so much to our squad,” said Vodafone Warriors head coach Nathan Brown.
“We’ve been keeping a close eye on him and have been really impressed with the way he has developed his all-round game. It’ll be great to have him on our roster from 2023.”
A Junior Kiwi in 2015 and 2016, Niukore made 42 NYC appearances for the Vodafone Junior Warriors in 2014, 2015 and 2016. While still NYC-eligible, he played 15 games for the club’s New South Wales Cup side in 2015 and 2016. He played in three NRL trials for the Vodafone Warriors in 2015 and 2016.
Niukore was initially limited to New South Wales Cup football for feeder club Wentworthville when he linked up with the Eels in 2017, his NRL debut coming the following year when he was used off the bench against his former club, a match the Vodafone Warriors won 24-14.

Primarily used in the second row, Niukore started in the centres eight times for Parramatta this year when he covered for injuries.

Both Kepu twins sign on for 2 years into the FG squad for 2023 and 2024.
On a developmental deal for 2021

Imposing twins Otukinekina and Valingi Kepu will join the Vodafone Warriors’ fulltime NRL squad in 2023 after securing extended contracts with the club.

The 19-year-old Aorere College products, signed on development contracts for 2022, will become top 30 players on two-year deals for the 2023 and 2024 NRL seasons.

After appearing for the Vodafone Warriors’ foundation S G Ball Cup (under-18 side) in 2020, the Kepus played in both Queensland’s colts and Intrust Super Cup competitions for feeder club Redcliffe this year.

“Lingi and Kina are important to our future, great examples of young players who’ve come through our Sky Sport Future Warriors pathway to progress towards the NRL squad,” said Vodafone Warriors CEO Cameron George.

otukinekina-kepu.jpg

“They’ve come a long way this year from colts to first-grade level for Redcliffe and we see them going much further for us. They’re exciting prospects.”

The Kepu twins were among the Auckland-based players involved in the Vodafone Warriors’ pre-Christmas preseason training block last year before flying to Tamworth to train with the full squad in January this year.

“After training with us in Auckland and in Tamworth, Lingi and Kina moved to Brisbane with our other junior players to further their development with Redcliffe,” said Vodafone Warriors head coach Nathan Brown.

“They’re big boys who have lots of promise and we were pleased to see them progress to the stage of playing in the Intrust Super Cup and acquitting themselves well.”

Born a few minutes apart either side of midday on August 23, 2002, the Kepu twins left home for the first time when they flew out to Tamworth in January.

valingi-kepu-1a.jpg

After representing the New Zealand Residents 16s in 2018, they were prominent when the Vodafone Warriors made their first foray into the New South Wales Rugby League’s famed S G Ball Cup in early 2020.

They appeared in each of the first six games to help the Vodafone Warriors to third spot on the ladder before the Covid-19 outbreak halted the competition.

This year they were an impressive double act helping the Dolphins to the play-offs in the colts’ competition where they were beaten one game short of the grand final.

In 10 appearances Lingi scored six tries, averaged 130 metres and 16 tackles a game and made 35 tackle breaks. In 12 games, Kina scored four tries, averaged 124 metres and 15 tackles a game and made 31 tackle breaks.

At Intrust Super Cup level, Lingi played seven times for the Dolphins and Kina five times.

Signing formalities have been completed for Cronulla-Sutherland halfback Luke Metcalf to join the Vodafone Warriors for the 2023 and 2024 NRL seasons.

The 22-year-old, off contract with the Sharks at the end of the 2022 season, made his NRL debut this year while he was still on a development contract.

His first outing was against his former club Manly Warringah in round 20 when he came into the Cronulla squad after Shaun Johnson was ruled out for the last six rounds of the regular season.

“Luke was really impressive when he came into the NRL late in the season,” said Vodafone Warriors head coach Nathan Brown.

“He had to wait for his chance after seeing next to no football in 2020 because of Covid but he showed just why he has been so highly regarded coming through the grades with both the Sharks and Manly.”

Rookie Metcalf signed from 2023

Signing formalities have been completed for Cronulla-Sutherland rookie Luke Metcalf to join the Vodafone Warriors for the 2023 and 2024 NRL seasons.
The 22-year-old, off contract with the Sharks at the end of the 2022 season, made his NRL debut this year while he was still on a development contract.

His first outing was against his former club Manly Warringah in round 20 when he came into the Cronulla squad after returning Vodafone Warriors favourite Shaun Johnson was ruled out for the last six rounds of the regular season.
Metcalf’s second appearance was against the Vodafone Warriors, when he was used off the interchange for only the last three minutes of a contest his side lost 16-18.
luke-metcalf-1b.jpg

In his fourth game, he was a standout scoring two tries, creating another and making 124 metres in Cronulla’s 50-20 win over the Wests Tigers.
“With Luke we’ve been able to sign another terrific young talent,” said Vodafone Warriors CEO Cameron George.
“He has been on our radar for some time and will add huge value to our club from 2023.”
After coming through the age grades with the Sharks, Metcalf was with Manly Warringah in 2018, 2019 and 2020 before returning to Cronulla this year.
An ACL knee injury ruined his 2019 season before he returned to represent Manly at the NRL Nines in Perth only to then be reduced to spending the Covid-impacted 2020 campaign in a training-only role.
Throughout his career Metcalf has stood out as a strike weapon. Able to play at fullback as well as in the halves, he represented New South Wales at both under-16 and under-18 level during an outstanding junior career which included him scoring 19 tries and kicking 61 goals in just 21 games for Cronulla’s S G Ball Cup under-18 side in 2016 and 2017. In all games at all levels from under-16s up he has a total of 63 tries in 89 matches.

Look for an early release request as why would Cronulla bother with him now if they need to plan without him for the future. Same goes for Paramatta.
I don't think the Sharks or Eels would part ways both still good players to use for 2022. The future talk you speak of would apply to clubs that have quality stock to fallback on. Storm or any other top teams.

Getting Metcalf early might be an option, given the supposed logjam of halves at Cronulla...
