That would be just FTA, then you would need to add in the value of the Fox deal per game. Lets say they are paying around $1.2billion for the five years. Thats $240mill a year. For 8 games that works out at $30mill per game. So overall each NRL game is worth $30mill from Fox plus three of them are worth a further $26.6mill from FTA. A good reason why its important we make sure the ninth game when it becomes available is sold to FTA not just Fox.
Fox exclusive games are worth $30million, non exclusive games are worth $56.6mill!

Ch 9 could not afford to loose the rights I really hope the NRL milked them for every cent. Was hoping for a miracle with Ten or 7 coming in with an 11th hour bid to top 9. It would have been exciting now seems more of the same.

If its Ch9 as likely will be they need some new people. Being abroad so watchnrl is fox coverage except for Origins & GF, listening to Gus as talented as football manager he is was not good. Being that negative on a GF with people who would not watch a lot of league (AFL states) listening was horrible. Hope its not more of the same and they totally refresh their coverage.

Numbers in the deal seem all smoke and mirrors at the moment. Herald will down play the figure while News corp will likely inflate it, so somewhere in between.

Surely the NRL execs including Abdo and Vlandys watch the 9 telecast and surely they can't be happy with the constant bagging of the game. You would hope this was something raised with 9 in the negotiations.

Sounds like Ch7 were only interested in SOO and 2 games a week so its not like NRL had a lot of choice is it? I'm sure if there were lots of equal options you wouldn't go with a Tv company who publicly says this about the game:

Yea two games pw on FTA is a non starter. Wasn't the scuttlebutt Seven were open to other FTA station airing games though? If Ten were willing to pickup a game or two it could have worked. Not ideal splitting the FTA base though.

I dont think they cared who covered the rest tbh. They had their eye on SOO and as min club games as they could to sink Ch9 in the annual ratings war. They have beaten them this year without NRL, imagine the beating if Ch9 didnt have NRL!

Media News: A certain Mr Red has only canned V Landy because he has two hats, one NSW racing, another Chairman of NRL. Even though when a certain media ( Nine) who purchased the Rugby Union to show on Saturdays and then than, potentially hurting the NRL - however the execs at Nine stupidly thought that they can Pubs and Clubs to show their Union games , hey presto Nine would have thought what a geat buy, look at the coverage we are getting. However V Landy put a stop to it via his power at Head of NSW racing and it's relationship with TAB, whereby TAB did not want to upset Vlandy & NSW racing, as Vlandy had let it be know that it interrupt the normal transmission of NSW racing on the Pubs and Clubs Tv screens to show Private school football was a NO NO. So a big one up for Vlandy their.
Next when you want to sell TV media rights, what better location setting than the Everest racing carnival. Get all the Nine top flyers their, flutes of shampers , chit chat and so on, again that a positive outcome of having a major exec/CEO/Chairman wearing two hats complimentary.

The NRL NEVER recieved $925 off Nine- and you know it. Most of the $$ were payed bewteen Nine and Foxtel via sub leasing. However if we recieve the $115-120m for FTA with the NZ FTA $'s will most likey be bigger than the AFL. If we get a yearly international event for example World Invitational ( Held in late Oct/Nov) I could see a extra potential ten million or $50m over 5 years. Game over we won.

Nine’s annual NRL fee dropped to AUS$115 million (US$85.2 million) per year, plus AUS$10 million (US$7.4 million) in contra advertising, after it sold on a portion of the contract to the pay-TV network.

That is incorrect. NRL signed a $175mill cash a year deal with Nine.
Nine then recouped $55mill of that back from Fox for simucast and Saturday night.
That meant the NRL cost Nine $120mill (cash) BUT they actually still paid NRL $175mill cash.
Unless Fox is now paying the NRL $60mill cash more than the last deal due to the new contract now covering simucast and Saturday nights games its a net loss for NRL.
Either way you look at it at the BIGGEST FTA deal ever done was delivered by Smith for $925million.
If it led to the biggest TV deal overall I guess we will never know as we wont know what this deal done is.

This article has it at 20% higher than last deal, overall they are stating their 2 year extension deal is worth $946mill or $473mill a year. Their last deal was $418mill a year. Same article has Seven paying just under $150mill a season for 23&24. Contra is usually around 4-8% of totals that are stated.

$120m is the value then. So PVL got the same value despite Covid and FTA dying
