yeh they are getting it all for free, taking $30mill of digital revenue from AFL, got increased sponsorship rights and the AFL just upped the players association payment by $23mill a year out of the goodness of their heart. Sounds plausible lol.

It said it was until 2024. That is in this 5 year cycle...After that is when they said no sponsorship

The tin foil hats are out in force today! Telstra signed a deal until end of 2024 with enhanced sponsorship and continued digital application management. From the horses mouth:

Telstra has today renewed its existing sponsorship arrangements with the AFL as well as extending it to include an enhanced focus on making Marvel Stadium one of the most connected sporting grounds in the world and a testing bed for Telstra 5G innovation.

The revised deal, which deepens the Telstra and AFL partnership that commenced in 2017 and runs through until 2024, expands the visual sponsorship elements such as on-field Telstra 5G signage, and continues the development of the AFL’s digital assets such as AFL.com, club websites and the AFL Official LIVE App. The updated sponsorship also deepens Telstra’s connections to AFL Clubs and extends the agreement with the AFL Players Association that engages all listed players as ambassadors for use in social marketing campaigns and other initiatives.

What's interesting in the Telstra deal is they are paying for much stronger access to players for sponsorship, digital product delivery and promotion of Telstra. I wondered why the payment to the AFL Players association had jumped so much in '21 ($37mill pre covid to $60mill last year) and that's why.
Sponsorship and Live Digital Rights are not the same thing-And you know it, and I was thinking this was about Media Broadcast Contracts- like TV networks and Foxtels as such.. Their is no way experts will place Tesltra's sponsorship in the Media wars contract column. - try again

Exactly. Looks like service updates and some ground sponsorship rather than TV/Digital right cash

I'm not talking about live streaming rights, I'm talking about running all the AFL's digital platforms and keeping the revenue from advertising, which is what they do. Though Telstra do still have some streaming rights including highlights and replays. Then add in the increased sponsorship arrangement's they have signed up for until end of 24. And thats why they are continuing to pay the money. But yeh believe they are getting all that for nothing if you wish lol.
I agree it is now moving outside broadcast revenue realms but that's how they are still reporting it. Bit like Vlandys burying broadcasting revenue in the catch all 'license' revenue line.
If you want to compare oranges and oranges you'd need to try and work out how much profit from the digital arm NRL makes. Before Vlandys hid it all away it was around $26mill revenue and $20mill cost so around $6mill a year profit. If you add that on to the $402mill, we are at around $408mill ish, around $55mill a year behind AFL for 23 and 24.

Seems like deja vu - NRL getting screwed on TV rights and Stadiums and AFL potentially signing a monster deal with a very generous offer from Tasmania (including a new stadium) to join their code.
" potentially " ??
the AFL has about as much chance of a monster tv deal as i do going down on Miranda Kerr

suck up to him more? He's just given him a $100million discount on the next tv deal as well as cutting out Telstra, dumping NRL.com news and letting them choose the next expansion club. I'd say he's already well lubed when it comes to News ltd!

  • Seven West Media (SWM) has signed a new deal with the AFL for the 2020 to 2022 seasons, and extended its contract to include an additional two years
  • The company is anticipating roughly $87 million in savings over the 2020 to 2022 contract period, mainly as a result of reductions to media rights and production savings

Seven West Media (SWM) has signed a new deal with the AFL for the 2020 to 2022 seasons- It' called 'new deal'
It' seems to suggest only for these 3 years. - and extended its contract to include an additional two years- extended it's contract, which could only be seem the contract they signed for the 2017- 2022 years. Also use of 'AND' means something different. So it extended it's contract, the only contract it could be is the 2017-2022.
By -additional two years- When added to the contract which had three years to run but was superseded by the 'new deal', so the extended was added to the 'old' ( or mentioned of contract) contract. This means for the years 2023-2024 the average will (ONLY BE) $146m. (NOT $190m as some have stated ) Which put pressures on the $473 or ( 2year ) $946 deal that the AFL fantasize about.
Telstra Phantom Contract just about nails it, Dill's reckless blubbering's about biggest deal ever.

you do understand what an avg means dont you? $117mil for 20-22 and $189.5mill for 23 and 24 gives an avg of $146mill over the 5 years of the $730mill deal lol
You keep throwing figures around hoping they'll stick when the media releases are showing what they actually are.

they are both as important as each other

the nrl dominates the northern states

the afl dominates the southern and western

so there is an incomplete market

and foxtel need both codes

infact foxtel could just about jettison everything other than nrl, afl and cricket

There must be some trepidation from the AFL given the fact Ch7 is actively litigating against CA for their bumbling of the BBL.

More games for more content with fewer stars equals a disaster and surely Ch7 will be frugal in these negotiations if they can't get what they want.

On that note foxtel are demanding Super Saturday, closing of State rights to see local home games on Free to Air, so Seven is going to be asked to end this conditions and still pay a Average of $150m, somehow that wont's happen. Conversely Foxtel may see it almost as loss making exercise and finally put the hard line down in the negotiations, if we don't get Super Saturday and WA, SA home games- then maybe Foxtel will pay in the range of $170-$to $ 200 (tops) This negotiations won't go well for th AFL. The real main parties know this paramount gambit was pure theater and Nine even if they a got a Thursday (one game) it would seriously cause Seven to change the amount they would willing to pay. It seemed to the NRL always had the gun to it's head when we went through several negotiations, the NRL had Gallop a nobody man, the Smith fiasco that Grant had to take over from, which had to give trade money for the end of Foxtels first and last call on bidding. Now the blowtorch is on Dill, a person who at best is being Coy and not correctling the record or a complete mathematical dunce.
