Big blow to the aussies. Megz out of the whole series

Healy to captain, McGrath v/c

Australia’s women’s team has been dealt a significant setback ahead of next month’s Ashes tour in England, with skipper Meg Lanning ruled out due to medical reasons.

Cricket Australia (CA) confirmed the news on Saturday morning, with Alyssa Healy to fill in as captain of the side while Tahlia McGrath was named as vice-captain.

While the exact nature of Lanning’s medical issue was not disclosed, CA said in a statement that it required management from home.

Australia squad: Alyssa Healy (c), Tahlia McGrath (vc), Darcie Brown, Ashleigh Gardner, Kim Garth, Grace Harris, Jess Jonassen, Alana King, Phoebe Litchfield, Beth Mooney, Ellyse Perry, Megan Schutt, Annabel Sutherland, Georgia Wareham

Good idea now she is captain, also not getting younger

Australia could be forced to blood an entirely new-look opening combination in next month's women's Ashes Test with Alyssa Healy seriously considering dropping down the order to manage workloads.

Healy has opened for Australia in the last three Tests dating back to 2019, taking on the role she has regularly occupied in the white-ball game. But the vice-captain is wary of the impact keeping wicket will have on her in Test cricket.

Also on Healy's mind is she was dismissed for a pair in her last Test against England in Canberra, on both occasions to the now-retired Katherine Brunt.

"I have given it a lot of thought. And it has been up for discussion for a little bit of time," Healy told AAP. "In the last Test match, look I put my hand up and I wanted to do it. It was my decision to open the batting and I thought it would be a great place to bat.

"I probably underestimated the work I would have to do in the field, not having to do that all the time. I thoroughly enjoyed it, and if the time comes and they want me to open, okay great. But I'd happily slide down to the middle and whack a Dukes ball around."

I dont agree that it was the perfect build up but our ladies haven't had much experience in batting on English wickets.

The poms are pretty good so this will be a great contest.

Annabel Sutherland is coming along nicely i cant see her remaining at number 8 in the batting line up for much longer.

Still only 21 and plenty of upside with her All-round abilty.

poor Pez, I'd volunteer to give her a big hug, would certainly make me feel better

Ladies done good, could end up with about 450 here as they bat down to no 12

Yup, not only that, we got 6-7 legit genuine bowlers in the lineup. Other than Healy and the openers, any of the others can bowl well if called upon

Get poms 5 down, not much after that, though Ecclestone can hang around

Looking forward to Darcie Brown bowling
