The Game 2023 Crowd Watch

Was at the game last night, several people around me were on their own as it was a school night and didn’t bring their children with them. Some seats were empty , a mate who is a fanatical fan lives over 90 minutes away and couldn’t make it from work , so stayed home. He has 4 in his family that attend.

Thursday night is the most fan unfriendly time, takes 3,000 to 5,000 off a decent crowd. That’s tv scheduling for you, the game finishes close to 10 pm on a weeknight too.

Suncorp has a lot of seats in the upper tiers the whole way around the joint that have handrails that block the views for seats at certain rows, it got me good last year for origin 3.

This was the biggest mistake they made when they moved MNF to Thursday, the kick off time.

Whilst Monday Night wasn't without issues, the 7pm kick off did make it far more family friendly and allowed it to draw comparable crowd averages, despite Thursday night attracting significantly more Broncos games.

The Eels had one of their lowest member turnouts last night, which considering they just came off a Grand Final appearance, had a reasonable pre-season & was the first game of the regular season was surprising.

Whilst I'm sure there were multiple factors contributing to that, I'm sure the timeslot didn't help.

I understand AFL and enjoy it to a degree. There's a number of factors that contribute to their attendance compared to league.
1 : There's no bad seats, the action happens all over the pitch.
2: The field is much bigger, so bigger stadium with significantly more quality seating.
3: You see more at the game than on TV , there's people trying to get free and create a lead and this is happening everywhere. You can only fully see the play coming together at the ground . On TV you only see a window. ( basically the opposite to league)
I agree that these are the most significant factors over which we have no control.

One we could influence is the attitude to results. Our culture tends to promote winning. Every week 8 teams lose. If we promoted enjoyment of a game, regardless of the outcome, we might get more people in.

Doesn't offer much hope if fans of a club who made last year's GF are justified in thinking their team has "let them down for nearly 40 years".

That is very silly.

You brought afl up. They lost 800000 spectators between 2019 and 2022 and 5000 spectators a game.
Our crowds went up 230000 and average crowds went up 1250.
I hope this helps. Maybe you and your afl friends can learn from us?
Let's hope AFL learn from the bloke who overestimated the crowd for the opening NRL fixture by 6k. We'll know if they start telling their fans to watch another sport or go away.

You are firing blanks mate. Crowd estimates are just that and a bit of fun. I know you are bored but your favourite sport starts in the next couple of weeks. You’ll be okay then.

Some of your posts are quite convincing, but the NRL partisan impersonation is laughably over the top.

Should have studied counter-espionage before taking the job in an AFL sleeper cell.

Dangerous game. Ruthless regimes sometimes shoot their double agents to protect the operation.

You're very easily impressed by any knowledge of AFL.

Hate to shatter your illusions, but there's this thing called Google. Yesterday I typed in "AFL fixtures" and Richmond v Carlton 16th March came up. Wanted to check whether they also start on a Thursday since this was a factor cited by those who thought the Eels/Storm crowd was a bit disappointing.

Hand the above in to the chief of secret police as a signed confession. If you turn in more RL fans, the AFL should keep you on their payroll.

Anyway back on topic. Wellington crowd was good not brilliant. Not a great ground for league though. Panthers crowd is fine given the weather. Two sellouts tomorrow at the despised venues on the beaches and we are looking okay so far.
