Great to see the Wakey v Bulls opening round blockbuster post sold out signs. Wakefield will surely win one of the coveted 12 licenses come end of year?

Rugby League chiefs have confirmed a change in the structure of the Championship and League One, two days prior to the start of the new second-tier season on Friday.

Aimed at equalising the number of teams in each of the second and third tiers to 12 by 2026, only one club will be automatically promoted from League One at the end of the upcoming campaign.
The bottom two clubs in the Championship will still be relegated, with the third-bottom team facing a one-off tie against the winners of the League One play-offs to complete the make-up of the 2025 season.

A Super Eights-style competition between the lower-ranked Championship clubs and the leading League One sides will then be introduced in 2025, with the addition of a new club – potentially as early as next year – completing the levelling-up process for the start of 2026.

The changes were hastened by the respective withdrawals of West Wales Raiders and London Skolars in recent seasons, leaving the current League One with only nine clubs, as opposed to 14 in the Championship.

Favourites Wakefield Trinity face Bradford Bulls, while Sheffield Eagles take on Toulouse Olympique in Friday’s Championship openers, the first season in which the introduction of IMG grading criteria means automatic promotion to Super League is no longer assured.
RFL chief executive Tony Sutton said: “The RFL began this process last September, and following significant feedback and consultation with clubs, a final proposal has been presented.

“A reorganisation to produce two divisions of 12 clubs beneath the Betfred Super League will provide greater consistency and clarity across all three competitions, and also increase the intensity and quality of the Betfred Championship.

From FB:

After speaking to clubs regarding the proposed Championship TV offer from Premier Sports.
It appears that some clubs are supportive of the news that every Championship game could be streamed on Super League + and the new streaming platform that Premier Sports is bringing out.
The support certainly isn’t unanimous with Bradford, Featherstone, Toulouse, Wakefield and York needing more information on how the deal will work and the benefits involved.
One of the questions clubs have asked for more information on is will the viewing figures be tied to increased IMG points - Bradford, Featherstone and York have all previously had games on Premier Sports which have attracted over 70,000 viewers.
Championship clubs close to the IMG fandom threshold of 3,000 are also cautious over the impact of showing every game live on the streaming platform. How will streaming every game impact crowds?
The Monday night broadcast slot has gone with the hope that games could be staggered over the Saturday and Sunday providing they don’t clash with the main Sky Sports picks.
That’s why the Championship opener between Wakefield Trinity and the Bradford Bulls can’t be broadcast because it clashes with the main Sky Sports pick of Leeds Rhinos vs St Helens on Friday.
Overall the positives outweigh the negatives and it'll be interesting to see what the clubs decide to do with the first games expected to be streamed in mid-April should they accept the offer from Premier Sports.

Rugby league outside of Super League is to undergo yet another radical overhaul, with the Super 8s system returning to determine promotion and relegation between the Championship and League 1 – with both teams set to become 12-team competitions.

The process of how that will happen will take place over a number of seasons: beginning this year. Just days out from the start of the new season, the goalposts in the Championship move significantly for those at the bottom with the side finishing 12th – third-bottom – now no longer guaranteed to be safe from relegation.

They will play the winners of the League 1 play-offs to reduce the Championship to 13 teams, and increase League 1 to ten teams in 2025. By 2026, both Championship and League 1 will have 12 teams apiece, after plans were approved at a meeting on Wednesday. Here’s a year-by-year breakdown of how it will work.

2024: this season

The top end of the Championship will remain largely unchanged each and every year. There is still no automatic access to Super League for the Grand Final winners under IMG’s plans, but there are promises for an increase in prize money for the Grand Final winners. That match takes place on the weekend of October 19-20.
It is what happens below that which becomes interesting. The Championship will be cut in size by one team at the end of this year, meaning that the bottom two go down as planned – and a one-off game between the winners of the League 1 play-offs and the team in 12th in the Championship decides the 13th and final spot in the competition in 2025.

That is because, as is the case now, the League 1 champions go up automatically. So dependent on the result of that shoot-out match, it will either be three Championship teams relegated and two League 1 clubs promoted, or one League 1 club promoted and two Championship teams relegated.

Either way, the end result is the same: a 13-team Championship and a 10-team League 1.

2025

But that’s not all. Throughout this year, the RFL are to accept applications for an 11th club to join League 1 in 2025, with a decision to be made by this September. That means the Championship will be 13 teams and League 1 will be 11, and once again, there will be an imbalance in the amount of teams flowing through the competitions to get us to two 12s in 2026.

Promotion and relegation between the Championship and League One will be determined by a Super 8s style competition involving the top teams in League One, and the lowest-ranked teams in the Championship. It is still being finalised in terms of plans, but it appears likely the final outcome will result in a 12-team Championship and 12-team League 1.

2026

From there, things become – slightly – simplified. The Super 8s remains in place to determine promotion and relegation, but no matter who finishes where in that competition, the end result will be 12 teams in the Championship and 12 teams in League 1.

What have the RFL said?

Chief executive Tony Sutton commented: “With so much to anticipate in the 2024 Championship and League One seasons, it was important to provide clarity to all competing clubs about the structure of their competitions going forward.

“The RFL began this process last September, and following significant feedback and consultation with clubs, a final proposal has been presented.
“A reorganisation to produce two divisions of 12 clubs beneath the Super League will provide greater consistency and clarity across all three competitions, and also increase the intensity and quality of the Championship.

“However there was a recognition that it would be unfair to reduce the Championship from 14 clubs to 12 clubs in a single season – so we have allowed a more gradual transition over two seasons, meaning a 13-team Championship in 2025.

“We also recognised the need to preserve promotion and relegation between Championship and League One, and the clubs have been enthused by a Super 8s type system which will provide more attractive and meaningful fixtures for successful League One clubs by providing a significant number of fixtures between Championship and the top League One clubs.

“There will be a significant increase in prize money for the Championship Grand Final winners from 2024, recognising that the winners of this match will no longer secure automatic promotion to the Super League – the Championship should be seen as a significant competition to win in its own right.”

Sounds alright. It’ll make it hard to ever increase the amount of Super League teams to 14 without adding 2 more teams or changing the structure again.

Can’t see why the bulls and city can’t share a new stadium or a redevelopment of valley parade.
yeh apart from a brief time when Bulls played there it seems the two shall never meet! which is weird given their soccer and Rl co-habitation at a lot of stadiums these days.

Need to get stadium situation sorted out. As much as I enjoyed odsal during the bull mania days it’s not fit for SL.
Crowd average as high as 15k at odsal

the issue with odsal is the maintenance if that’s on the rfl then it’s not a problem for the bulls

It was a bludger of a ground 25 years ago when I used to go, I dont suspect it has got any better in that time!

Caravan palace (park?) had minimal improvements for 15 years in super league ….

I’ve been to odsal too
Not really, Craven park has had ongoing improvements over the last 20 years and will continue to do so,
none of which has anything to do with the state of odsal.

Odsal is fixable and can maintain its unique character. Move pitch towards the main stand, build a new stand on the terracing side, build a craven st style fan experience at the non corporate box end. Do that and it would be a great SL ground with its own character. Finding the 30-40mill pounds or so it would take, thats a different matter!

Bulls have higher crowds than hull kr

And have won super league many times

in a franchised super league they would soon be higher on the ladder than rovers

another prediction lol. Before that they need to get a high B or A grade license.
RL in Europe comes down to how rich owners are and how much they are willing to pump into clubs to get them from lower division to top division. HKR are only where we are due to investment by our owner and some very smart decisions over the last 5 or 6 years.
If Bulls can find someone to invest in them and make the right deicions along the way then they can indeed be a top SL again. I went to Uni in Bradford and spent 2 years going to odsal during Bull mania. I thought Rl in England had finally come of age!

Talk of 14 teams will mean Bradford get a franchise

they will build off the back of that till their crowds are over 10k again

without having to worry about relegation they won’t overspend on players

so when kr were in the champ you jumped on the bulls bandwagon lmao

Nope still a rovers season ticket holder when we were in the third division. I was in Bradford for uni so odsal was our regular pss up night. Good times.

if youd have asked me mid 90’s if Bradford would go bust and disappear from SL I’d have said you were insane.such are the vagaries of sport, no guarantees. Enjoy the highs whilst they last, because they rarely last long.
