Yeah was wondering about that, being a poor country Tv penetration maybe be limited, but mobile phones might be completely different, of course the amount that could be charged would be a fraction, but with probably millions of mobile phones throughout the country a small fee would add up.

Digicel reported 2.1m subcribers in 2020 just in PNG, and 2.6m in the Pacific overall - just before the Telstra takeover

Digicel’s investment in PNG has been generating significant returns: in the year to March 2019, PNG operations brought in revenue of more than US$340 million and made a contribution to group earnings (EBITDA) of $160.5 million. PNG’s contribution was worth 16.7% of total EBITDA and was the largest from a single market within the group. Revenue and profitability increased even as the company lost a half million mobile subscribers, which it says was the result of government policies requiring the registration of SIM cards.

The PNG operations have been making an increased contribution to Digicel’s profits, offsetting losses elsewhere in the group’s operations. More than 14% of the Digicel group’s revenue is counted in PNG kina. It’s regularly the largest or second-largest foreign currency in which the company deals. “

Lots of money being made from the png market

What is the value of a PNG viewer vs Aus/NZ viewers in the eyes of advertisers? 10%? 5%? Less? Still would probably make an impact to the broadcast that’s bigger than we originally thought.
At the end of the day they are viewers and the viewers get different ad choices - the companies won’t pay the same rates as here but it would have the same appeal to PNG marketing companies which would be of value. E.g. they might have Palmolive, Honda or something. That in turn could result in corporate sponsors for a future PNG-based team and will increase the value of tv based sponsorship in PNG. Just because we’re moving to digital subscriptions over the next 10 years doesn’t mean a third world country would. They might continue to watch tv as it’s low entry/free to air. Also, are we going to discount all third world country ratings saying that they are not valuable? Most of the soccer and cricket world are third world.

Those PNG "ratings" exist now though, how are they currently monetised?

Soccer in terms of TV, is a Western European market, and we are 1/500th of that in comparison.

The other reason was the entry of Vodafone into PNG whom along with Telikom PNG have cheaper data rates then Digicel. Digicel's data rates in PNG is way more expensive then what it charges in the other Pacific Island countries. Probably explains why it makes more profit in PNG then in the other countries.

Most of their profits came from png

Telstra got it cheap

Australian taxpayers came up with 85 percent of the money to buy it but Telstra keeps all the profits

Wonder what the conversation around the dinner table is tonight ?

Bet png gets a mention!

Telstra getting 1.3 billion us to buy digicel from China isn’t an issue but png getting 600 million for an nrl team is according to some rugby league “fans” on here

(Turns out that’s 2 billion Aussie dollars lol)

The opportunity to do this exists now though.

Whilst a new team will no doubt spark further interest, but there is already huge interest in the NRL right now in PNG.

So be keen to understand how much the NRL are generating from PNG media now.
I’m guessing that seeing as it’s never mentioned in any media deal it significantly less then nz pay. Mikail do you have to pay to watch nrl on your phone or is it free like telstra app used to be?

It’s making me feel so much better about me paying 40% of my hard earned money in taxes.
How has no one questioned the govt spending $2bill buying an overseas company then gifting it to a private Australian company to then Own And profit from?

Given their current team is in the qld cup it’s probably worth hardly anything

Just like the nz tv rights before the warriors came in

The fact they got 1.15 million ratings for the pm13 game shows how large the market is

The png tv deal will be another revenue source for the nrl which hasn’t been on anyone’s radar on here before

if nrl is already getting a large audience on digicel why hasn’t it been worth something decent up to now?

Maybe it’s only available on the nrl app

All I do know is nobody said boo about png tv ratings till the pm13 game

Dunno

2.6 million including the Pacific so a huge number

If I had to guess I would say it’s cause the nrl games are on the nrl app but that’s just a guess
