2025 Panthers 17.

Another GF. Amazing. What a club! Whatever happens in the ‘24 decider Penrith Panthers have achieved greatness already. That’s undeniable.

Looking ahead and making some off season discussion. What’s your 17 + 18th man for round 1 - 2025 and most of the season if everyone is fit?

Backs:
Edwards
To’o
Tago
C.McLean
Alamoti

Halves:
Laurie
Cleary

Forwards:
Leota
Kenny
Smith
Garner
Martin
Yeo

Bench:
Talagi
Sorensen
Henry
Papali’i

Patea - 18th

I think the NSW Cup team will be much stronger in 2025 as well. There’s some gems who have had another season of experience ready to rock next year. Depth will be overall better due to being a year older.

Thoughts?

Sorrenson will always start if fit, expect papail'i to prop of the bench, for a few first games, we didn’t buy him to run an edge, we have garner, Martin, mav and Sorrenson for that

Tago and To'o have one side locked down then theres a battle for the left side, Alamoti is doing well so its going to be a fight with Casey for Centre but theres an opportunity for rotation between Alamoti and the McLeans.

Talagi will probably be starting 5/8 but Cole will offer some competition if he stays fit. Laurie is the back up FB, highly doubt he plays 5/8 unless we have injuries.

Papali'i starts in a Papali'i, Martin and Yeo backrow, with Garner and Sorenson as bench.

Front row of Leota, Smith and Henry on the bench. May need to bring in a forward that can slot in, Patea is an option but will have to see how his off season goes..

Not a bad position to be in..

Papali’i said in an interview after we signed him that Ivan spoke to him about playing second row. Plus Ivan tried to sign Fifita first, so was trying to add a staring edge player to the roster, then signed Papali’i as soon as they didn’t get Fifita.

So would be surprised if he plays as a middle.

True but Garner has also gone from strength to strength. We are in a good spot

I think they were just trying to add a quality forward and edges were what was available. All of Sorro, Martin and Papali’i can play some middle at a rep level so why not improve what is arguably our shallowest position.

I personally think Cole starts with Talagi as the 14. Talagi needs to prove he can defend before I’d want him in our starting side. Maybe they swap down the track but no harm in Blaize playing his way in. If Cleary was out I’d say you would need to roll the dice on Talagi/Schneider vs Cole/Schneider.

To be fair when it comes to the pack start and bench - only Leota and Garner can’t alternate between mid and edge. Yeo, Smith, Henry, Sorensen, Martin, Papali’i have good versatility in that regard should they be required. Yes, Yeo is a mid/halfback purely that goes without saying but just making note.

Sorro, Marto, Smith, Henry and Paps have all shown they can bash in the middle or be moved to an edge if required, at times in the last 5 seasons. Not saying that’s what will happen, far from it but it does make good conversation about what the actual back row and bench rotation will be and how Ivan uses players. Clearly he is trying to evolve the way Panthers play.

Garner does make more sense on bench. He can cover center too. But I think his form back end of this season has been undeniable and he IMO has earned a starting spot in the 13. While Sorro is unfortunately getting older and his body is failing more often than not. I think to better use him, a bench spot gives him and the team far more impact and versatility.

Henry becomes out and out mid rotation and Pap/Sorro then become both mid and edge rotation depending how Ivan sees the game unfolding. It’s not a bad predicament to be in!

5’8 i’m unsure on still. Cole probably didn’t do enough to cement it. His kicking game isn’t where it needs to be. Schneider could be it but there’s a gap between his leg speed vs his mind/game reading speed which is telling! I think the 5’8 needs to be quick enough to get fast clean ball to the outside men! Talagi’s defence needs work and I think he isn’t there as a ball player yet. Maybe by mid season? Thats why I like him starting the season as the 14. He can play anywhere in the backline and 10 mins in the middle to give him a defensive workout early in the year wouldn’t be the worst thing. See: Toelau.

That leaves Laurie. He was being used as a half in lower grades at times through the season and he can kick whilst also being the closest like for like to Luai. Unless Ivan completely fools us all and goes with Toelau, now that might be interesting and his late season cameos at hooker was more to do with shoring up his defensive work than anything else like I’m insinuating with Talagi off bench.

Alternatively, Schneider goes to halfback and Nathan goes to 5’8 even though the numbers on their backs doesn’t change. They haven’t actually started a game together, I don’t think they’ve even been on the field at the same time yet. So that’s an unknown. Could be shades of Cogger/Cleary.

Good spot to be in!

Yeah he and Martin will be the edges. We lack edges and are fine for middles, So that approach was correct

I think Talagi starts at 6. Ivan hasn't shown anything that he trusts Laurie's defence

I think you got the right forwards just not in their roles. Papalli will start, he says on the edge but even if Garner's form warrants a change of heart. Straight switch with Fish

Patea next forward in should there be an injury? I find him playing lock in Cup at the back end of season interesting.

As for backs. Do Panthers try to slap 5kgs on Casey and have him at wing and leave Paul at center? Paul’s defence has improved out of sight!

J.McLean next man up or do you go for a guy like Asu (for wing), a bigger body who can continue the Panther-ball style going with his running strength?

I said earlier. I'd have Patea now because his numbers. Eg metres per run is higher suits him better for those short stints off the bench.

Another pre-season for him and he will be a beast.

Easy to forget that Casey was in school last year and hasn't had a pre-season. So adding weight should be easy enough.

Yeah I think Alamoti is the centre injury permitting. He has been great power wise and now is defending much better.

He is another who is still eligible for Flegg next year so scary to think what his ceiling is

This exactly what I thought would be happening, cleary chiming in when ever needed would be my pick
