Grant did that on purpose however that’s not why the rule was brought in. Hookers started literally chucking the ball at guys laying down not impeding the ruck whatsoever. In that instance the parra player was kneeling in grants line of pass. Grant threw it straight at him so correct penalty, but the defender was also taking the piss.

Yeah I get throwing into a downed opponent should be a penalty but the guy shouldn’t be able to kneel right next to the play the ball and obstruct melb passing in that direction

Exactly he was sitting right in the play the ball making zero attempt to get out of the way.

Grant has been penalised for that play several times since it came in, surely he knows it's a penalty the other way by now. But apparently not, lol.

Would it be a penalty also if he ran into him ? It would be 6 again at the least as he’s offside ….
Who knows with these refs

nope the rule is now pass into an offside player and it’s a penalty. It has encouraged players to obstruct pass routes as it has not been implemented properly. Grants example was a clear milk and a stupid one at that given the rule is black and white in the offside players favour

How has Grant not learned about that penalty yet lol. He's done it several times.
Stupid.

To be fair though, the rule needs a review. Like the seven tackle set it was brought in to control a specific circumstance and has had a shitload of unwanted impacts. In this case it means there's basically no disincentive for merkins lying around in the ruck.

Yep just a typical over reaction from the powers that be. Instead of just ruling play on instead of rewarding cheating play, the make it a penalty. A bit like the over reaction to defenders putting a player who jumps for the ball in a dangerous position ( which by the way was always a penalty) the NRL completely outlaw even the most innocuous contact.
