2025 WTC FINAL: Aust v SA @ Lords SOUTH AFRICA TEST CHAMPIONS

Pretty disastrous.

SA batted well. But felt like we made it too easy for them? Bavuma was on one leg yet they ran so many singles. Felt like we let the game wander off.

Still time for an SA choke but the lead is slim. Will be an interesting first hour tonight. We gotta go at them hard.

That Smith dropped catch (and subsequent injury) has been the turning point in this 4th innings. The whole momentum of the test has shifted on that one incident.

Definitely not blaming him for it, as it was a very difficult opportunity to take. However, with the Saffas at 2/76 and Bavuma on 2* at the time, the whole morale and confidence would've went through the roof of the Aussie team had Smith caught it. Bavuma was the big wicket, and his dismissal would've opened the door for Cummins/Starc/Hazlewood to rip right through the middle order.

Instead, Smith dropped it, got injured, went off the field, and a change in the body language of the Aussies on field was clearly noticeable from that point onwards. Only good thing was it's one of the rare times the vermin at Lord's didn't boo Smith off the field.

This South African run chase reminded me of the Headingley 2023 Ashes test.

This has been one of the frustrating aspects of Cummins' captaincy that I have been critical of: allowing batsmen to take easy singles. When you allow batsmen in test matches to continually rotate the strike, the bowlers struggle to build any pressure.

England chased down 251 with 3 wickets in hand, but what didn't get mentioned much in commentary is that England won scoring at more than 5 runs an over during that 4th innings! (5.08 to be exact). For most of that innings, England batsmen played low-risk cricket: just kept rotating the strike, accumulating the score, gradually chipping away at the target.

When Australia takes the field in a few hours time with South Africa only needing 69 runs for victory with 8 wickets in hand, it's completely, utterly useless in this situation (and a waste of time) having fielders out on the boundary. It's all or nothing. Cummins has got to have more fielders closer to the pitch and encourage the batsmen to take more risks if there's any chance of taking these remaining 8 wickets, otherwise his team might as well just forfeit the game, pack their bags and head straight to the West Indies

Agreed except I think I'd have a deep cover for Bavuma because the way he plays that lifted shot it's a genuine catching position

Just some close men in for Lyon?

I feel like they did it for a little while and stopped. It was quite late and I'd had a few bevvies. But the ball just kept popping up in the air close. Lyon is just weird with field placements. Almost never anyone at silly point but a guy always at backpad. I get it but he is resistant change. Warney used to criticize it all the time.

The slips idea moving closer was right. But that just makes the catches even tougher. And even then a lot of those chances were falling short.

With Bavuma on one leg we should have found a better plan to remove him.

And that cost us with the Smith injury didn't it? He had the helmet on and was much closer to the bat.

Those are such hard chances off faster bowling.

Regarding the commentary during this WTC final, I don't know who specifically appointed the commentators (whether it's the ICC or someone else), but there needs to be a MASSIVE overhaul of the commentary team for future ICC events.

Whoever thought it was a fantastic idea to have Stuart Broad, Kevin Pietersen, Ravi Shastri and Dinesh Khartik behind the microphone for this test needs to be sacked ASAP. All of them are absolute flogs that have always hated Australia and have made no secret of it. Khartik being the worst of that lot. During the 2023 Ashes, it was irritating to hear Khartik being a smartarse and chuckling in the background whenever England was doing well. One thing I will always respect Mark Waugh for was when he put Khartik in his place on-air during the 2023 tour of India, and the little bitch couldn't handle it.

Not to mention, it's absolute nauseating hearing Ian Smith, Graeme Smith, Shaun Pollock and Nasser Hussain all deathriding Australia in unison at every opportunity. They get paid big money to call a match. With the extreme partiality shown in their commentary, they might as well leave the commentary box, put the football cheerleaders outfit on, hold pom poms and jump up and down on the sideline whenever South Africa scores a run.

The Aussie voices don't get a reprieve either. If Matt Hayden and Mel Jones are really the two best "Aussies" behind the microphone, the standards of cricket commentary have hit an all-time low, especially Haydos. In a broadcast that's being watched around the world by millions, Haydos kept jiving about Ian Smith being fat, as well as all this other babble (that had nothing to do with cricket) in a pretentious, deep, authoritative voice. Absolutely pathetic, and he would've got clipped on the ears by Richie Benaud if he was still alive.

agreed

he is unfit and short so he doesn't get his foot to the pitch of the ball hence he has to throw the wrists at the ball and hit it on the up, problem is some go over he fence but any miss hits and he's gone at deep cover

24 50s and 4 tons, batting for a long time is not his strength, I'd be making him reach for the ball

Sun will be out around 25-26c day 3

Best day for batting

SAs test match …if they want it

What part?

It pains me to say this,

but iin the dinkum department SA are winning this . Clear as day deck is tons better to bat on now, and will be chasing sub 250, even sub 300 they do it , though we go into day 4.
I think it’s there destiny to finally not choke after an easier path to the final..

Bring on the Windies…

Im about to cry. and be in a fetal position for a week...

I am cheering for the Aussies until they take the last wicket for the win. Aussies attack is the greatest ever and this will be up there with one of their best wins
