That's just a myth really that the Union-loving newspapers want you to believe. In terms of attendances at club games and television audiences for clubs games, league is 2nd biggest by some margin. Union and cricket are bigger during international season, and tennis is bigger during Wimbledon. I maintain that RL would be easily the 2nd most popular sport overall if it had a proper international scene. It goes back to the old problem though, that Southern-based newspaper editors are biased against RL. Almost all of them went to posh schools where they played Union and were taught to turn their noses up at anything north of Leicester. The media coverage we get in no way reflects the popularity of the sport. Equally, Union gets a lot more coverage than it deserves.

It's a shame that darts and snooker each enjoy more free-to-air tv coverage than league, and that can come as a bit of a shock on a league fan's first visit to England...

It's just a strange thing when you take that first trip over for a month, and either darts or snooker is dominating TV for that particular time of year.

And I'm talking about pre-Super League Show years in places where tourists typically viist like London. Coming from Sydney or Brisbane where rugby league is the first item in each night's sport news, it's a noticebale difference.
