2nd Test: Australia v England at Adelaide Dec 5-9, 2013

As a comparison, Hashim Amla averages 47 at home (in the worlds best conditions for seamers) and an amazing 58 away.

That makes him superior to Clarke IMO.

And the man I consider Australia's second greatest batsman of all-time, Greg Chappell, averaged 54 at home and 53 away.

How does essentially swapping home and away averages make Amla a better batsman?

Is being less successful on your home pitches less of a problem than being less successful away or something?

Do we start to think of a declaration at some point?
If we are still batting after tea it can make it difficult to get a result.

If they can bat till an 30 - 45 minutes after tea they will be around 550 - a good point if they get that far and give England 15+ overs to end their day

Fair point.

But for me it's because an average of 47 is still high class (compared to Clarke's average of 42 which is standard for test cricket).

But also because batting in RSA is much more difficult than in Australia. You can get some wicked seaming decks over there, as Clarke can attest with his average of 34 in RSA.

I'd take 47 home, 58 away over 65 home, 42 away as a better balance and sign of dominance on all wickets.

Nah if I was Australia I'd rack up as many runs as possible in the 1st innings in the hope that it gets difficult to bat sooner rather than late.

Particularly when, if you do score big, it'll definitely be at a fair clip with Clarke, Haddin, Johnson and Harris all naturally quick scorers.

thank f**k your not, that's exactly what Alaister would do, well into the 3rd day as well if he was 1-0 up.

If we are still batting, we will declare most likely 30-45 min after tea today, try and get around 15 overs at them tonight

Alma is world class so is Clarke, not sure what the debate is about.

Most of this pommy side have seen better days. I can see a dip in their performances.

Funny how pommy smith doesn't say how many tests Amla has played in India or England which is about half of what Clarke has played. Amla carved India up in 2 tests and inflated his average, before that he averages in the mid 40s and he scored a triple century not out in England which was about half of his runs in England in one innings.

Ahhh, the old "let's just not count the big scores" argument. That's always a winner!

Let's just agree that they're both great batsman. I just don't think Clarke is the best player of spin in the world, or the current no.1. But as I said earlier there isn't much in it.

Hey Tommy

Tell me something, Not bringing out the "he doesn't have to face his own attack" like you used to use against Australian batsman of the past (when McGrath and warne were around) ?

Surely with the seaming decks of SA and UK, Amla get a good points start not having to face his own attack, which are considered by many, yourself included im sure, as the best around for a while now.

How convenient to leave that info out now that it doesn't suit your argument.

We did our best to collapse and they did their best to not let us with failure after failure (dropped catches and no ball) and bad luck (50/50 lbw calls). Their best was too good.

We're batting our way to an unloseable position. Declare an hour before stumps and knock off 3 of them before the end of the day.
