Australia unchanged for Sydney Test

Brydon Coverdale at the MCG
December 30, 2009

Ricky Ponting has declared himself a certain starter for the Sydney Test beginning on Sunday despite suffering more pain than he expected in his hurt elbow during the win at the MCG. Australia have named an unchanged 12-man squad for the second Test, resisting the urge to add Steven Smith as a second spinner following Pakistan's struggles against Nathan Hauritz in Melbourne.
Clint McKay was retained in the group but is expected to be 12th man again, following a bowling performance Ponting described as the best from an Australian Test team in a couple of years. It included Hauritz's first five-wicket haul in first-class cricket, and though Ponting said a second spinner would be an option for Sydney, the selectors decided against naming Smith.
Smith was added at the MCG as cover for Hauritz, who had a groin injury in the lead-up to the Test. Smith had enjoyed a net session with Shane Warne which Ponting was certain would help his development. "I know he would have got a lot out of the session the other day," Ponting said. "Any time any young spinner can spend some quality time with Warney one on one is going to be of great benefit to them."
Ponting will lead Australia as they aim to take the series 2-0 in Sydney, despite his injury troubling him through the Boxing Day Test. He said he was not in any doubt at all for the second Test.
"I've had a bit of pain in both innings to tell you the truth," Ponting said. "It probably flared up more than I was hoping it would halfway through my first innings but I declared myself fit to play and I've just got to put up with it and get on with it from there. That's all I could do. I've continued to have treatment through this game and will the next few days give myself every opportunity to recover as well as I can for the next Test."
Australia squad Shane Watson, Simon Katich, Ricky Ponting (capt), Michael Hussey, Michael Clarke, Marcus North, Brad Haddin (wk), Mitchell Johnson, Nathan Hauritz, Peter Siddle, Doug Bollinger, Clint McKay.

No Smith, Not totally upset about that, then again only Hauritz as the spinner at the SCG might be a worry. Then again we beat SA last year that way

Cant see McKay getting a gig, unless someone is injured

Looks like Hughes will have to hope he is included in the 15 man touring party to NZ, and only injuries will get him in the side

North needs to perform he is under the pump IMO, Pakis shouldd do really well at the SCG but The Rug and Johnson are an intimadating pair. Siddle is just a tard. Hauritz should do well and we also have north and Katich who can have a roll and Watson the reverse swing specialist.

Can't believe people are still death-riding Hauritz after he did his job ONCE AGAIN.

Siddle is the biggest concern for Australia - not offering anything at the moment.

A mere 5 in four tests.
he only played 3 tests (was out for the WACA). But saying 5 in three tests really understates just how sh*t he has been, 5 wickets in 6 innings, all (bar the last one) of which he opened the bowling, oh and all of which Australia took 10 wickets, so this is an opening bowler taking a mere 8% of the wickets

Bollinger also opened the bowling and bowled 6 innings, he took 18 wickets, which is a good 30% of the wickets in the matches he played

Yeah but I wouldn't replace Siddle with Mckay, it is like swapping sh*t for sh*t!! If Hilfy was fit I'd have no doubt Siddle would be dropped.

he was down the pub at 8:00 PM

source? :D

I remember Siddle bowling a couple of awesome spells at the SCG vs SA, Really lifted us. He needs to find that sort of form, otherwise drop him for Hobart.

The reality is if we tank Pakistan again, and Siddle under performs again, then the genius selectors wont want to change a winning side

Heres hoping Hauritz can keep improving from now on. Sydney should give him just as much assistance as Melbourne did on days 4 and 5, maybe earlier

I am not sure how likely it ever was, but it is looking less likely that Younis Khan will make an appearance in Sydney
Younis Khan's chances of playing in Sydney thin

Osman Samiuddin in Melbourne
December, 2009

The chances of Younis Khan appearing for Pakistan in the New Year Test in Sydney have reduced significantly after no further decision was taken on the Pakistan team management's request to call up the former captain to bolster the batting.
The second Test is due to begin on January 3 and given the considerable travel time between the two countries, even if the request is accepted tomorrow and Younis were to leave the same day, he might struggle to be ready in time for the Test on Sunday.
In any case, it appears as if the selection committee is not entirely convinced of the need for Younis, at least without him having attempted to find some kind of form first in the RBS Pentangular Cup, a domestic tournament due to begin on January 1. "It is not like the team is losing just because he isn't there," a member of the selection committee told Cricinfo.
"The Pentangular is happening and that would be a good way for him to play and get some practice. The Sydney Test is looking very unlikely right now and no decision was taken today. And who will he replace there? Various batsmen have scored some runs here so it might be unfair to drop them."
Initially, the selection committee appeared to be waiting for the result of the first Test in Melbourne, which Pakistan ultimately lost by 170 runs, before taking a decision. Mohammad Yousuf, Pakistan's captain, reiterated after the match that the side needed Younis and that a request had been made some time ago.
But there appears to be a gap in communication: one selector claims that no official request has come in writing to them from Australia and another said that the chairman of the PCB, Ijaz Butt, had received the request and was going to consider it after discussing it with the selectors. That, in all probability, will now happen tomorrow.
Amid the confusion, it is increasing likely that Pakistan will have to do without Younis as they attempt to level the series in Sydney. Pakistan's batting struggled in both innings of the first Test, bowled out for 258 and 251 on what was widely acknowledged to be an unusually placid MCG surface. On the final morning, they lost seven wickets for 81 and it prolonged a run in which they have, as a side, passed 350 only twice in 14 Test innings.

I think Afridi would be a handy addition and a great foil working with Danish, but he would have to bat in the top 6 as I reckon they need to have the third seamer (Gul probably). I wonder if he'd take to the challenge of opening? If he gets going we're in the poo, and if he doesn't then it's no different to any of their other options is it? He's such an enigma you just never know he could be their Gayle. Also would make a big improvement to their fielding.

It won't happen of course but something like:

1. Afridi
2. Farhat (or even Shoaib Malik)
3. Younis
4. Yousuf
5. Umar
6. Misbah
7. Kamran
8. Aamer
9. Amir
10. Gul
11. Kaneria

would take a fair bit of beating if more than 5 or 6 of them have a good game.
