I am not quite in the CDG fan club with Iafeta - nonetheless, with CDG, Neesham, Anderson, Santner and probably the likes of Worker etc we have a bunch of mediocre all-rounders better than Mitchell Marsh!

Still think Neesham is the better option at 6/7. but none offer enough with the ball (Santner IMO doesn't offer enough in any facet in test cricket, but that's another debate)

I really don't get the Santner love any more, it seems to be a desperate cling-on to give us the next Vettori. Especially since he keeps Sodhi out, a genuinely attacking spinner who can also hold the bat.

Neesh started off great but suddenly went very mediocre, and it always felt like Anderson was running a high of luck which eventually ran out. CDG isn't a whole lot better but he's surely won the incumbency now.

For me, CDG does the role he's picked for as a bowler. Second change, he's a holding bowler. Line and length. The wickets for the most part should come from the other blokes but in saying that he's handy at nipping them out too. From a batting perspective I have always thought he is technically very sound. I liked his innings yesterday in that he gave himself time to get in, absorbed pressure, and then cut loose when we needed to stifle the momentum before the new ball.

Neesham is a good bat. And he generates good pace. But he can't keep to the offside of the wicket. He's very loose as a bowler.

Anderson too is a good bat when he gets in. His bowling though is mediums but not too accurate. Big issue for him now is getting on the park frankly.

Santner has a technical issue in that his bat comes from very wide out. It's exactly why he was bowled yesterday. If he could fix that I think his batting average would go into the 30s because the rest of his technique is very good. For the backlift issue he can still be a very sweet timer of the ball. I'm not worried about his bowling average. NZ wickets don't tend to spin too much. Sodhi struggled far worse in test cricket.

Assuming Ryder is not an option:

Out of Neesham, Anderson, CDG and Munro- Lord CDG is by far the better bowler fot test and FC. Its not even close. CDG can nibble a new ball around on line and length and get Safrican wickets if needed to.

Munro is the better bat and the ideal 6 - but he doesn't complement the current bowling attack well in place of Santner's spin and playing both Colin's and a spinner makes for a weaker seam attack. In case you're not aware - Munro started bowling his seamers a lot in all formats esp red ball last season on Hesson's direction. He has even at times been opening the bowling for Auckland.

T Astle seems to have usurped Sodhi just now outside of T20 on bowling alone, but that could change again.

Munro at 6 would permit A Patel, Sodhi, Santner or Astle to play batting lower.

Kuggs is on the selectors radar and a useful bat. But illness in missing the NZA v WI game has let Fergusson get ahead of him in the pecking order. Southee is under pressure here. But CDG retained in place of Southee in a test last year vs Safrica to permit 2 spin options. In the end Boult was unfit for the 2nd test then Boult and Southee were unfit and Henry played the 3rd. Southee was vice captain at the time to boot! But how do you drop Wagner?

NZ has a lot of options right now in sorting out batting strength. But CDG averages over 36 with bat and under 26 with ball. He's not an easy guy to drop. And its his bowling that has kept him in the team before his latest run of batting scores.

While all the focus on Santner at 6 - it kinda takes away from Niccolls who has been very very poor at 5, despite a ton in a losing effort vs Safrica where he made hay against their spinner and part time spinners. Tom Bruce is an option here, Watling as a batting specialist or even Munro really wouldn't do worse, or Latham could drop down to 5 and a new opener found. Hopefully better than George Worker.

Latham didn't get hands to a pretty regulation slips catch to dismiss Braithwaite

Boult picks up Hetmyer and I find out I was watching 10 mins behind.

Sunil Ambris. Really? 2nd time in first 3 test innings he is out hit wicket stepping on his stumps. Chief, little bit of advice. Take guard a foot further up and it won't happen again.
