A frenzy of calls was made on rugby league player Anthony Minichiello's mobile phone during the NSW State of Origin team's infamous big night out.
Team management and league officials obtained phone records that revealed more than 30 calls were made from Minichiello's mobile between midnight and 6am, The Sun-Herald has learned.
The records were requested as part of the investigation into the lewd phone call made by Mark Gasnier, which was found to have been made from Minichiello's phone.
It was believed Minichiello had the phone with him only after the players had gone out again about 3am - having previously returned to their hotel - but it now appears he had the phone with him earlier and that several players spoke on it. Minichiello had claimed he had lost the phone.
The phone call made by Gasnier, which led to his sacking and, subsequently, the sacking of Minichiello, left the team's State of Origin campaign in what coach Phil Gould described as "tatters".
Gasnier paid the price for ringing a woman - whose name was on Minichiello's phone directory and whom Gasnier didn't know - at 3.41am and saying: "Where the f--- are you? There's four toey humans in the cab. It's 20 to four. Our c---- are fat and f------ ready to spurt sauce and you're in bed. F--- me. Fire up, you sad c---."
There have been no other public complaints about any of the other calls made and there is no suggestion that any of the calls other than the one made by Gasnier was out of line.
But the fact there was such a flurry of phone activity in the early hours of the morning and involving alcohol-affected players creates the sort of risk Gould was obviously hoping to avoid by ordering the players to leave their mobile phones at the team hotel when they went out.
