40 seconds

Last night Cameron Smith got penalised in the 64th minute for taking too long to take a dropout
was it fair for the Ref to hand out that penalty or was it to harsh, apparently ch9 said he only took 38seconds but is that even too long

Did the ref warn them at all? If the ref warned them about wasting time before awarding the penalty, then I think it was fair call.

If the ref called time off then the time taken for the drop out wouldn't matter in the slightest.

It was a bullsh*t penalty that had a major impact on the game.

How many sides have taken more than 40 seconds in similar situations and not been penalised ? Absolutley terrible decision, right up there with the bullsh*t no try call in the st george v broncos game when the video ref claimed there was an obstruction.

Robert Finch sucks arse and so do most of the merkins reffing the game at the moment.

they said on sports ears the ref warned him at 20 seconds and then again at 10 seconds

Smith then decided to lean down and pull up his socks and the ref penalised him

They may as well stop the clock for dropouts. Can anyone explain to me why the clock is stopped when a player is held up in-goal but isn't for other situations? If anything that only takes a few seconds to restart play

it's a reward to the attacking team and stops the defensive team from taking a breather

teams in front also often used to waste time in a close game to wind down the clock if they had to do a line dropout

I understand what you are saying El but the fact is he entitled to take the full 40 seconds if he wants to and he only took 38. The decision was wrong and it had a major impact on the outcome of the game.

At every line dropout,as soon as the referee blows his whistle to signal that a line dropout will take place, the video ref up in the box starts a stopwatch.

The only fair thing would be to have a "shot clock" which automatically starts when the ref rules a drop out.

If it runs out a siren sounds and it's a penalty.

Put a 1:30 shot clock on conversions as well and nce the siren sounds the shot is automatically scored as a miss.

Seem pretttt nloody obvious to me.

If he was warned and was deliberately wasting time then so be it. Fair penalty. Sick of players wasting time to get a breather and keep the clock counting down. The faster the game the better. Technically perhaps it shouldn't have been a penalty, but I like to see ref using a bit of discretion. It's just sensible.

it seems it could have been avoided if he didn't try and be a smart arse though

How was he being a smart ass? The rules state he has 40 seconds to take the drop out, he used 38 seconds who cares what he did in between. Horrible penalty that had a major effect on the game.

No, it wasn't a fair penalty at all. How can it be fair being penalised for something he's perfectly entitled to do?

Talk about a backflip, first you say it's shouldn't have been a penalty and in the next breath you say it's sensible. How in the hell is it sensible when once again the player didn't break any rules to deserve a penalty against him? If the rule says a player has 40 seconds to kick the ball then he has 40 seconds. That means anything under that is perfectly legal so there's no technically about it, he was a whole 2 seconds under the allowable time. It's not hard at all to understand, or at least it shouldn't be.
