UNDERRATED Sydney Roosters front-rower Peter Cusack produced an extraordinary defensive performance on Sunday - completing 43 tackles in just 44 minutes.
His amazing effort came despite the fact he played with a stomach virus.
A trained plumber, Cusack plugged every hole in the Roosters' defence during an 11-8 win over St George Illawarra.
"It must be a first grade record for the amount of tackles in that amount of time," said NRL Stats' Ian Collis.
Cusack, 27, was used in two stints during the match. He started the game and went through until the 23rd minute - making 25 tackles, three in the first 32 seconds.
Cusack reappeared in the 49th minute and played another 21 minutes, completing a further 18 tackles.
In the 68th minute, Cusack made three tackles in only 13 seconds.
To show how impressive Cusack's performance was, teammates Adrian Morley and Chris Flannery made 36 tackles, but over the entire 80 minutes.
"I didn't feel the best before the game. I felt crook," Cusack said last night.
"It was a real physical game and I just got through my work.
"I didn't realise I had made that many tackles. But I was just doing my best for the team.
"The best thing was we came away with a win - the game could have gone either way."
Roosters coach Ricky Stuart last night paid tribute to Cusack.
"The one thing about Peter is that he is very consistent in his football," Stuart said.
"Peter never gets the wraps or the write-ups he deserves.
"But he is one of the backbones of our forward pack. All the the other forwards like playing with Peter.
"He is a good, tough, unassuming player who just goes about his business.
"We have worked hard with Peter on his speed and agility."
Roosters veteran Luke Ricketson enjoys playing alongside Cusack.
"Pete's a player that doesn't let you down," Ricketson said.
"Every year he just keeps getting better.
"I don't think it bothers him that he doesn't get much press exposure - just so long as he is playing consistently in first grade."
Cusack, who has overcome several injury setbacks in the past year, is off contract at the end of this season.
His manager, Darryl Mather, has opened preliminary discussions with Roosters management.
