49ers a team in absolute mess

It appears the 49ers head coach Jim Tomsula has no idea on what his assistant coaches are thinking and saying to reporters.

San Francisco 49ers coach Jim Tomsula has hosed down speculation Jarryd Hayne was close to getting his punt return job back.

Tomsula was surprised to hear special teams coordinator Thomas McGaughey's comments on Wednesday that returner Bruce Ellington was just one fumble away from being sacked.

"I hope he didn't say that," Tomsula told reporters on Thursday.

"I would not want him to have said that.

"I'm sure he didn't say it like that."

Former Parramatta NRL star Hayne, after dropping three punts in six games, was cut from the 49ers and signed to their practice squad in late October.

Ellington, a kick returner and wide receiver, also took over Hayne's punt return role, but he has dropped balls the past two games and McGaughey on Wednesday put Ellington on notice.

To illustrate his point, McGaughey pointed to the way the New England Patriots sacked their punt returner Chris Harper after he dropped a ball on Sunday.

"You put the ball on the ground again, yeah, that's just a reality of what we do," McGaughey told reporters on Wednesday.

Tomsula said Ellington needs to correct his catching style.

"We just need to catch the ball the proper way," Tomsula said.

"Get the hands down.

"He's been coached on it.

"Bruce is our punt returner and we need to field the ball with the hands in the proper place."

Ellington will face testing conditions on Sunday when the 49ers play the Chicago Bears at Chicago's Soldier Field, with eight degree Celsius temperatures and gusty winds.

Jim Tomsula may well go down in NFL history as the worst head coach.

He is gone come season end.

I'd say Jarryd Hayne is a curse but the Eels have been a shambles since before he was born.

How's Greg Hardy going?

As a human being, not very well.

As a football player his play has dropped off in the past few weeks. Four sacks in his first four games, just a half a sack in his past three. Supposedly suffers from asthma which caused problems for him in the Cowboys most recent game.

Anyway let's get back on to the subject matter. The 49ers are in dire need of a new coach. How has he lasted this long?

Can't believe before the season started I selected them to win the NFC West.

The fear for me is that the disaster of an off season, and continued injury issues during the season will point the finger away from Tomsula and give him a reprieve.

We have cap money to spend, 10 or so draft picks, and some decent young players who just need a coach who will help them improve. Getting back to a championship contender will take time, but there's no reason we can't push towards being a playoff contender again with some smart moves in the off season.

I don't see improvement coming (or decent players wanting to sign) if Tomsula is still the coach.

Except for when they play the Cowboys I actually like the 49ers so I am happy to see you have taken my comments the right way.

The 49ers are in a down period at the moment. But given all your draft picks and some good free agent buying this off-season there is no reason that within a few years the team should not return to the playoffs.

The first thing the eam has to do is find a new head coach.
