You're probably right in today's case, but he has recent form in this area, during the home ODI series against England he repeatedly dug us into a hole in the first 10 overs and then got out. It achieved absolutely nothing.

Yeah I thought that you might have meant the series in England as in the series here he only played in the first game... And carried his bat to the end at a run a ball...

Edit - yeah I checked on cricinfo... He injured his thumb and had to have surgery... Only played the first game.
