Incidentally, I was thinking about all the Watson hate the other day - the fact that he has a remarkable ability to get to 50 and get out - and I wondered: is that such a bad thing?
I mean, he does need to convert more to 100s but his consistency in reaching 50 is quite remarkable and means that he is almost always doing his first job as an opener which is to survive the early stages.
In other words, the criticism is way too harsh.
Absolutely spot on. Of course it'd be nice if he could convert a few more of his scores into tons now and again but i'd have an opener that can give you a solid start of 50 or so more often than not than one who scores 30 or less on a regular basis.
The most ironic (geniused) thing is that Watson cops a sh*tload of abuse on here for scoring 50's and not converting them to tons yet Hughes cops virtually nothing from most when he's only scored one 50 in his last 14 digs and 8 of those innings he's scored under 25
but but but he shouldn't have been dropped in the first place and all that but he was and if he hasn't recovered from that by now then that only proves he hasn't got the mental strength to play test cricket right now, if ever. Give me Watson's 50's and poor conversion rate to get a ton any as opposed to Hughes' just plain poor conversion rate in getting even one 50.
Khwaja on the other hand is looking good out there so hopefully he can go on with it.
