I hope Dussey isn't being considered FFS. Not the time to be bringing in old boys IMO. I'd prefer White if they wanted to bring in a Victorian.

Ponting should have had a word with Presti about puting the team ahead of yourself.

Hopefully the delay is about finding a new captain other than Clarke, as it will be a sad day when he leads our nation in test cricket... even more so now given his performances.

They'll go with a full time spinner and Khawaja, surely, to replace the injured Ponting and Harris.

Other than that, Johnson could be replaced by Bollinger.

I'd be very surprised if they replace Bollinger with Johnson no matter how sh*t he's been the vast majority of the series. If the decided to bring him in then surely it'd be at the expense of Hilfy who's been about as threatening with the pill the entire series as my 10 year old neice.

With Khawaja, Hughes and Smith in the side I wouldn't have a problem with Dussey as an injury fill in for Punter. That's all based on this morning's news reports that they were looking at playing Uzi at 3 and moving the batting order down one with Smith dropping 2 spots to 8. If Punter isn't calling time but is genuinely looking to come back when fit (I'm not a fan of the idea, but I don't want him finishing like this either) then Dussey is a good one test fill in considering the amount of youngsters already promoted. He could bat 4 and the plan would be pretty much how they were looking at going anyway.

Whilst I don't rate Cosgrove, Ferguson or Marsh at all they could also fill in for the one test. I don't think any of the longer term replacements are ready yet. That's all based on the idea that they move Smith down. My personal preference has always been to stick with Smith at 6 (or swap with Haddin maybe) and bring SOK in at 8, but I doubt that will happen.

That Vodaphone ad where the dudes Grandma is trying to bowl Watson out looks suspiciously like Hilfenhaus in drag. He might have bagged a few more poles if he had gone out and got a nice blue rinse.

they have too much manlub to leave Notch out imo

Punter being out will probably save Smith, and Oozi will come into 3, they dont like to make too many changes. If Oozi came into 6 I could see Smith out the door.

Harris out, Beer in, unless they decide to give SOK a go but that would be a strange decision given that Beer was in the squad.

Just trying to guess what they'll go with, but I say that will be it.

Khawaja has been brought into the squad. Final team has yet to be named.

Ricky Ponting may never play another Test after being withdrawn from next week's Ashes contest in Sydney due to his broken left finger. Ponting's absence creates a raft of issues, including the appointment of Michael Clarke as Australia's 43rd Test captain later this afternoon, and whether he will add to his 152 appearances in a baggy green.
Australia delayed naming their squad for Sydney - Usman Khawaja will be included - after learning Ponting's fracture had deteriorated during the fourth Test at the MCG. That result ensured England retained the Ashes and meant Ponting has failed to win them for a record third time.
"I'm devastated to tell you the truth, it was the news I was dreading," Ponting said after landing in Sydney. "During the game I didn't think I'd done too much more to it."

When asked if he was considering retirement he said: "I'm not thinking about it at all." Ponting, who scored only 113 runs in the first four games, could face surgery on his finger, but is expected to be fit to guide Australia in their push to win a fourth consecutive World Cup. He had an x-ray on the final day of the Melbourne defeat and it showed the fracture had moved during the match.
"He needs to commence treatment immediately to achieve a satisfactory outcome," Alex Kountouris, the team's physiotherapist, said. "The treatment options include surgery or aggressive splinting and immobilisation of the injured finger."
He will see a specialist again over the next day to decide on the best option. "His return to cricket will be based on how quickly the fracture heals and he will hopefully commence training in the later part of the Australian summer," Kountouris said. "He is expected to be fully fit for the World Cup."
Ponting's Test future is less clear as Australia's next five-day engagement is currently scheduled for Sri Lanka in August, although there is a talk of a series against Bangladesh after the World Cup. He is already 36 and Australia have realised during their poor Ashes performance that they have to start rebuilding through young players.
The deputy Clarke will replace Ponting, who took over the captaincy in 2004. However, Clarke has had a poor campaign with the bat as well and there are lingering questions over his suitability to control the team at such a crucial period.
Khawaja was on standby for Ponting in Melbourne and was also called late into the squad for the opening game in Brisbane when Clarke had a bad back. He started the season well for New South Wales, scoring a double-century, and leads the Sheffield Shield run list with 598 at 74.75.
Despite his strong overall record, he hasn't posted a first-class hundred since his 214, although he has produced some useful half-centuries. The past four Tests have shown that Australia need big scores from their top six to survive against England and it is a tough ask for a debutant to provide such leadership to an ailing outfit.

Michael Clarke will captain the side with Brad Haddin as his deputy for the Sydney Vodafone Ashes Test, which starts on 3 January. The 12-man squad is: Michael Clarke (c), Brad Haddin (vc), Doug Bollinger, Michael Beer, Phillip Hughes, Ben Hilfenhaus, Mike Hussey, Mitchell Johnson, Usman Khawaja, Peter Siddle, Steven Smith, Shane Watson.
Cricket Australia Chief Executive Officer James Sutherland said:
“Given the injury to Ricky Ponting the National Selection Panel made a recommendation to the Cricket Australia Board this afternoon that Michael Clarke assume captaincy of the Australian Cricket team for the fifth and final Vodafone Ashes Test match in Sydney and for the Commonwealth Bank one-day series.
“This recommendation was unanimously endorsed by Directors.
"Brad Haddin has been appointed as vice-captain for this remaining Test match while Cameron White will deputise for Michael in both the one-day and Twenty20 form of the game.
"We congratulate Michael on his appointment and wish him well for the next few weeks.”
NSP Chairman Andrew Hilditch said:
“The NSP today announced a 12-man squad for the fifth and final Vodafone Ashes Test at the SCG.
“Obviously we are very disappointed to have failed to win back the Ashes but we look forward to trying to level the series in Sydney.
“With Ricky being unavailable for this match we are sure that both Michael and Brad will lead this Australian side with great professionalism and the full support of the team as we strive for a victory in Sydney.
“We look forward to Ricky completing his recovery and leading this team to a fourth successive ICC Cricket World Cup on the sub-continent at the completion of the Australian summer.
“Usman Khawaja will make his debut for Australia in this match, something we are excited about given his tremendous form at domestic level over the past two seasons.
“The unfortunate injury to Ryan Harris during the fourth Test has provided the opportunity for Doug Bollinger to return to the Australian squad.
“The final side will be decided after we have had the opportunity to assess the wicket and the conditions in the following days at the SCG.”
The Australian squad will travel to Sydney on Friday with the first training session planned for Saturday morning.

More of same from Aussie selectors - what's the feeling among fans?

TBH I am shocked to see Hughes, Smith, Bollinger, and even Johnson in the team - it was a chance to make a change...

Always a chance they can win, but seems unlikely, England are just flat out better... and I am still shocked at the treatment Ponting is getting - prick yes, but giant of the game... and I think a big reason the slide of Australian cricket many of us predicted has taken longer than we expected...
