That's strange because South Africa are playing India tomorrow.This is the 3rd year I think it has started on the 3rd
Prior to that it was the 2nd. ICC suits decided 3 day buffer was required between each test.
So if the MCG test finished on the 30th (5th day), the 2nd Jan would fall as only 2 days rest, hence the move to the 3rd
I must admit I prefer the 2nd as well. Thats what test cricket is all about, at times playing back to back tests, survival of the fittest , physically and mentally
