A handy guide to the NRL grand final for Victorians

Article from: The Courier-Mail

By Mike Colman

October 03, 2008 12:00am

ON Tuesday a Sydney newspaper reporter put Melbourne to the test. He walked down Bourke St Mall with photographs of Billy Slater, Greg Inglis and Israel Folau.

Not one of 20 locals approached could name all three.

One got close. She thought Billy Slater was Kelly Slater, the surfer. Another thought they were TV game show hosts and a third asked if the Melbourne Storm was a basketball team.

Yet for all that we've been assured in recent years that the grand final attracts a Victorian TV audience numbered in the gazillions, give or take the 20 in Bourke St Mall.

That being the case, one can only assume that many of those Victorians glued to their sets on late afternoon-early evening Sunday will be a trifle confused about the finer points of rugby league.

Maybe they'll think they are watching basketball. Or surfing. Or a game show.

But fear not Sporting Capital of the World, help is at hand. The following is a Victorian viewer's guide to watching Sunday's grand final. Keep it close by when tuning in to Rabbs, Gus, Sterlo and the boys and you can't go wrong. Well, no more wrong than the rest of us anyway.

Let's start with Rabbs, Gus, Sterlo and the boys shall we?

Now don't be concerned when they don't mention your team for long periods of time. It's just that the Melbourne Storm is not from New South Wales, a problem coincidentally shared by the Queensland State of Origin team. You'll get used to it. Queensland supporters have.

Also, if you hear strange noises coming from your set, do not adjust the sound. This will just be Gus and Sterlo choking on their words when they have to praise the Manly players. Like just about everyone else who follows the game they dislike Manly, but the way your coach and CEO have behaved in recent days, they now dislike Melbourne more.

As for the game itself, there are a number of things to be aware of.

For instance, that bit of wood between the two goal posts is the cross bar. If the ball drops below this bar after being kicked, or passes on either side of the posts, this is referred to as a "miss". Note: the kicker does not receive a point.

Likewise, when the ball is kicked in the air. Players must catch the ball with both hands – and this might seem strange – then hold on to it.

Also, when the ball is on the ground, players must not run along behind it trying in vain to pick it up as they fumble it forward time and time again in the process. This is called a "knock-on". It is not a good thing.

Which brings us to a part of the game known as the "tackle". This is when one player puts his arms around the man with the ball and actually brings him to ground, thus . . . oh forget it. Life's too short. Let's just concentrate on the big picture.

Look out for the Melbourne No. 11. His name is Mick Crocker and he is a highly trained specialist with a very crucial role to play. Namely to maim the Manly No. 1Brett Stewart. Should he succeed, as was the case this time last year, Melbourne will win.

There's also the "fairytale finish" element, with Manly's Steve "Beaver" Menzies and your bloke Matt "Boof" Geyer both hoping to go out a winner, but don't worry about trying to remember that. Ray Warren will remind you. Over and over and over.

Let's see, what else is there? Oh yeah, the coaches. When the camera pans up to the glass boxes and one coach is writhing around like he ate a bad curry, that's your guy Craig Bellamy. The one sitting motionless like a Madame Tussauds wax model of Shaggy from Scooby-Do is Manly's Des Hasler.

And apart from remembering that it's called rugby league and not rugby and your team is the one in purple, that's pretty much all there is to it.

It's really a very simple game. It must be. After all, the Melbourne Storm CEO Brian Waldron has only seen a handful of matches and already he wants to run it.

i like the digs at AFL

still the Storm have made little impact in Victoria and they never will

I am getting a little bit sick of hearing that the storm have made no impact in Victoria.... Lets review some of the FACTS:

Melbourne Storm average a higher crowd than some Sydney teams... allbeit in a crap stadium

Melbourne Storm generate better TV ratings than Swans and Lions do in respective cities when shown FTA

Melbourne Storm generate more in sponsorship and TV rights for every other club in NRL than they before they were in the comp

Melbourne Storm may be one of the best teams in the past 25 years

Honestly walk down the Pitt street mall with photos of Swans players..... you wont get many bites maybe Barry hall thats it...

The success of a sporting franchise is not measured by people shopping in a mall ffs

Hmm, that's strange, I've seen players catch it one handed in NRL. Greg Inglis comes to mind.

As for Melburnians not recognising NRL players, I'm Victorian born and bred and lived here for 38 years. If you showed me three photos of current AFL players I wouldn't be able to name a single one of them.

They will be able to claim a niche market and that's all we need. There's no criteria that suggests that NRL teams have to be in rugby league-dominated areas.

All we need is our niche and the Melbourne market. No sport is going to rival fumbleball down there and they never will, but that doesn't stop other sports/footy codes from having a presence.

If the NRL can do the right thing by putting Storm games on at a decent hour combined with a great new stadium, I think rugby league can improve tenfold down there.

What a load of BS. Most people down here know the storm. I doubt anyone thinks they are a basketball team. maybe somebody was trying to be funny.

they may not know all the players but they know who the storm are. there is plenty of interest in them. the storms profile isnt as high as the afl clubs but 20,000 members is a good indicator of the teams popularity.

wise up.

given the storm have good regular attendances in a non-rugby league town i fail to see why people keep whinging about them not making headway.

It's lazy slob hack jounalism at it's best.

Fancy making a deal over someone recognising Billy Slater as Kelly Slater. It's obviously someone who knows who Billy is, just trying to be a smartarse.

I suppose if some underfed, massive-headed journo like Mammoud came up to to me with a photo of Barney Hall from the Swans I would probably name him as Benny Hill or something.

Yes he did but the emphasis on that is he hung on to it. Not catch it for 3 seconds then let it go and get a reward out of it in the end...

As for recognising players of other codes...I know what Ben Cousins looks like, but I have never seen him play AFL!

:lol::lol:

1. Name which Sydney team is being outrdrawn by the most successful team of the past 3 years and I'll tell you why. Sheesh, If any Sydney team had the success the Wrestlers have had the past 3 years they would have average crowds of 20k at least...as for crap stadium; been to Shark Park or Brookvale lately?? :sarcasm:

2. Thats a given; AFL sux.

3. I have read that 3rd point 4 times and still dont get it . Take a breath.

4. I agree. Hence they should be earning "massive revenue" and achieving crowd averages better than most teams. But they arent.

5. Agree

6. Agree. But most Victorians wouldnt know Billy Slater from a box of crayons.

Typical sh1t RL article, 20 people ffs? They could have been outer Mongolians on holiday!

Perverse thing is people don't seem to realise that the fact players aren't recognised is a blight and damning indictment of the state of OUR game, not the ignorance of Victorians or the failure of the Storm. I bet if you took the captains of Australias 5 main sports the RL one would be least recognised in over 1/2 the country. No wonder Gasnier couldn't get a 3rd party deal to keep him in the game!
