Memo to the All Blacks' jersey suppliers: you had better make them a size bigger this year.

Following 12 weeks of tailored fitness and skills programmes, a key unit of 22 rugby internationals have emerged from 'Camp Conditioning' fitter, faster and bigger.
The camp winds up here tomorrow with the players released to their respective Super 14 squads for their reintroduction to the competition expected around March 23.
Not surprisingly, players and coaches alike quietly raved about the progress made with players allowed valuable time to condition themselves for the international season culminating with the World Cup in September in France.

The squad were controversially omitted from the opening rounds of the Super 14, with complaints from rugby paymaster News Ltd, but All Blacks assistant coach Wayne Smith makes no apologies for the break.
If anything, Smith insisted that a similar type of conditioning programme needed to be introduced every year to prevent player burnout.

"I'm not saying this will be done again this way, but I think it's raised an issue that we need to find time for these guys to condition every year," Smith said yesterday.
"Globally the season needs to be integrated because you can't have elite athletes playing all year round.
"In any given year we're going from January to end of November. They have four weeks off then they're back into it. You can't keep doing that year after year.
"I don't know what the solution is, but I what I do know is that it's going to come to a head and there needs to be more thought given to player welfare as part of a global season.
"It's not ideal that the best players don't play, but for the good of the players and good of rugby short term and medium term it's the ideal option."

Besides the physical aspects of the camp – with all the players recording improved results in strength, speed, agility and skill level – Smith stressed the players' top-two inches had received attention.
Achieving a mental and physical balance was paramount and he believed the group, the core of whom have been working with the coaching regime for the past three years, were the best balanced players he had ever worked with.

"Of course you coach and do your physical training but you need a whole package to play really, really well," Smith said.
"I think those intangibles of character and spirit make a difference between a good team and great team.
"I think all in all it's the best balanced group and one of the most responsible groups I've had.
"You need responsibility and self-awareness in your athletes and I think this group is the best I've had in that respect."

For all the benefits Smith extolled about the camp, some players still felt anxious about their absence from the Super 14.
That anxiety has possibly been heightened with some impressive performances from current internationals who fell outside of the protected 22-man squad.

Midfield back Aaron Mauger, an All Black since 2001, was not immune to the feeling.
"I was a little apprehensive last year when I found out about it, that I was going to be one of those guys (not playing)," he said.
"It's always hard watching other guys play and you know you don't get the reward of playing at the end of the week, even though you're training hard. "Everyone here seems to be a little apprehensive about going back into the sides, a bit nervous about trying to get their positions back, but hopefully we get a crack and you can't worry about it too much."

I agree that France will be there at the business end, just have to look at their 6 nations form and them playing at home.

I would love the Wallabies to be there too but just can see it happening.

You look at the strenght of NZ and their depth it's amazing.

As All Blacks coach Graham Henry's reconditioning programme enters it final throes, details are now emerging that show how divisive it has been.

The Sunday Star-Times understands it took a $750,000 inducement, to be divvied up among the franchises, before New Zealand's five Super 14 outfits would give it their blessing.

That's the amount the New Zealand Rugby Union have agreed to pay them for lost gate takings.

The cash, described as stingy by one source and miserly by another, will be split between the franchises, according to who is the hardest hit.

It appears the absence of players like Jerry Collins and Dan Carter, who put bums on seats for their franchises, is biting hard.

The Star-Times canvassed the five New Zealand franchises this week. While all support the Henry Plan, the financial ramifications have created tension.

All but one reported a drop in season pass sales for the year and some anticipate they will be out of pocket by around $200,000.

Highlanders chief executive Russell Gray said season pass sales were down 15 per cent. New Zealand's largest franchise, the Blues, have been performing superbly on the field but franchise marketing manager Grant McKenzie said season pass sales were down about 11 per cent on last year.

"And one of the glaring differences on last year is, of course, our missing All Blacks," he said.

"While it's not the only reason for the drop off, it is a major factor."

The Wellington-based Hurricanes' financial success has been underpinned by season ticket sales. Holders flock to the brilliant facilities at Westpac Stadium and enjoy privileges such as first rights to test match and sevens tickets.

Hurricanes chief executive Greg Peters said pass sales had dropped by about 1000 on last year.

Peters said although the figure was about what he expected it was still a major concern.

Revenue generated by season pass sales is important for rugby in the capital but even more so in the regions.

"The franchise is pretty proud of its record of distributing its profits back into the nine provinces that make up the franchise and for some of the smaller ones (like Horowhenua Kapiti and Wairarapa Bush) it is what keeps them going," Peters said.

"So any drop off is of great concern."

The hardest hit franchise in terms of missing All Blacks is defending Super 14 champions the Crusaders. Chief executive Hamish Riach confirmed a drop in pass holders but would not provide a figure.

It's believed to be in the vicinity of 25 per cent.

Understandably, he said the franchise would vehemently oppose any future reconditioning programme, other than in a world cup year.

"We'd be loath to see it again. While there are a number of reasons why ticket sales are down, such as the amount of rugby on at the moment, the reconditioning programme has had a massive effect.

"We were happy to back the All Blacks and the New Zealand Rugby Union this time but, as I said, we'd be loath to do it again and I don't think that it will happen any time soon."

The Chiefs have bucked the trend. Season pass sales, on the back of Waikato's sizzling form in the Air New Zealand Cup, rose by 200.

Franchise chief executive Gary Dawson said the result was pleasing, but he was still wary about gate sales.

"While it's a great result by our marketing team we still are unsure what overall gate takings will be," he said.

"They still might drop off."
